The entire plot doesn't happen without Christmas because John wouldn't have been there otherwise.

Theres a simple test for whether or not something is a Christmas movie. Watch it in July.

Does it feel weird to do so because its not Christmas? If yes, its a Christmas movie. If no, its not.

You need to have the whole spirit of Christmas vibe for it to be a Christmas movie. Its a Wonderful Life, Scrooged, Elf, A Christmas Story, and countless others all have this.

Die Hard has not one ounce of Christmas Spirit. Its like saying Billy Joels, Shes Right on Time, is a Christmas song. Just because he mentions putting up a Christmas tree during the song. Love the song, but Ive never heard it on any Christmas playlist.

Verdict, Die Hard is a fantastic flick, but not a Christmas movie.

It's very clearly a Christmas movie from the first moment.

The events of Home Alone only happen because the Wet Bandits chose Christmas Eve to commit their crimes, since people would be out on vacation. Kevin only is there to make the movie happen because the stress of Christmas caused his family to not notice he wasn't with them.

The events of Die Hard only happen because Hans Gruber chose Christmas Eve because security would be light and cops would be distracted. John is only there to make the movie happen because he's going to the Christmas party to attempt to reconcile with his wife for the holiday.

Neither movie is about Christmas. They're about crime. However, Christmas is a very central, integral backdrop to both.

Therefore, either both are Christmas movies, or neither of them.

For me its the throughout. Die Hard, confirmed Christmas party, I gotta machine gun ho, ho, ho line, Run DMC, awesome for sure. But then it becomes an action movie of a cop fighting terrorist.

Home Alone from the get go is a Christmas spirit driving movie. Constantly, throughout. The manger, the choir singing, the old man who was thought to be a serial killer reconciling with his son. Kevin coming to appreciate his whole family including Buck. Just an overload of that spirit.

Currently watching Elf, and it got me in the feels. Something Die Hard will never do from a Christmas perspective. But its a great movie, and if you want to watch it as a traditional Christmas movie then thats awesome imo. Either way Ive clearly had too much egg nog and have smoked myself stupid. So happy holidays yall, whether its Die Hard or Earnest Saves Christmas, have a safe one.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

It's not really about Christmas per se. The fact that it's Christmas is pretty integral to the plot. And there are multiple references to Christmas in some of the best scenes of the film. Bruce Willis sends a dead body down an elevator as a warning with a message written on him that says "Now I have a machine gun Ho Ho Ho" It's more than just window dressing. It's a Christmas movie.
