I could not be more excited to be your host for this year's VGM Grammys! Last year was quite contentious, with lots of discourse and controversy (particularly around the victory of best soundtrack of Fitness Boxing: Fist of the North Star over Trails to Azure and MLB The Show '23), but I'm sure we're all well-rested and ready to get back into the thick of things! I'm confident most of you recall the rules, so for those just joining, welcome! The VGM Grammys is a contest taking inspiration from the most glorified and august of award shows, the Grammys. Each year, there are five consistent annual categories, and five categories chosen by rotating members of the committee. The annual categories are: Best Soundtrack: Honoring the album that, with an unwavering glow, shines brighter than any other this year Best Arrangement: Honoring the track that melds original brilliance with inspired ingenuity to breathe new life into a beloved classic Best Composer: Honoring the musician who has done more than any other this year to enrich our lives with their genius Best Track: Honoring the track that stands all above the rest, earning respect from even its bitterest critic Lifetime Achievement Award: Honoring the as-yet recognized composer whose name is lauded more than any contemporary for their diligent work across years towards their art These categories are of course familiar to everybody and need no further explanation. Please keep in mind any composer that has previously won a lifetime achievement award is ineligible for that category. Seeing as that list is full of such important and distinguished persons, I won't insult your intelligence by reposting it here. This year's committee-chosen categories are: MOST UNPARALLELED ATMOSPHERE: Honoring the track that, with grace and restraint, most delights us with its mood, atmosphere, ambiance and soundscape Best Royalty-Free BGM: Honoring the track whose selfless donation to the public eye we are most grateful for Best of Atelier Nekomata: Honoring the track that we are most thoroughly convinced must have been made by either Gust or Naoyuki Sato, even if all rational and factual evidence indicates otherwise Best Track from your Workout Playlist: Honoring the track that pushes you through that last damn rep, over and over again Best Use of Pitched Percussion: Honoring the track that best highlights a sadly-overlooked and often maligned class of instrumentation More information will be provided over time for these categories in order to build anticipation and not at all because I never bothered asking the committee members for a detailed description of their category. PIANOS ARE NOT PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS Eligibility Rules This is the 2024 VGM Grammys, so of course all tracks must be from 2024, or from games that released in 2024, or had a re-release in 2024. Additionally, submissions for Best Track from your Workout Playlist must be on your actual workout playlist. Contest Format I've given you the "what", but not the "how". Each participating user may send up to three (2) songs for each category. When the nomination period ends, the four songs from each category with the most nominations will be put up to vote, with the winner being announced by me in a thread and over Discord. If there is a tie for the last slot for a category, ties will be broken in a way that is guaranteed fair and unbiased and satisfactory for all parties involved. Don't ask silly questions. Some rules: All nominations and votes will be done via PM to me. Over Gamefaqs or Discord idrc. NO ALTS ARE ALLOWED Vote trading is illegal! This is a fair and clean contest people! If I see any explicit agreements to trade votes, those votes will be disqualified! Rallying is illegal!.. but I do appreciate publicity and hype for this contest... If you do end up posting nominations/votes publicly, I reserve the right to chastise you like you are a small child Please include a screenshot of your workout playlist so I can verify you made eligible nominations for that category The nomination period will end... uh, after my first couple finals.
