He's probably going to get confirmed, and he's going to have something really embarrassing happen that also embarrasses Trump.

My main question is, if he gets confirmed why does HE have to be the guy? If I got caught drinking at work I'm fired or a double demotion as punishment. I don't have a 24/7 job where you need to be on the ball all the time. That alone is disqualifying and he seems to add nothing anybody else lacks.

I guess loyalty to Trump is the main consideration if they haven't said so.

He got this nomination because Trump watches Fox daily, needed the sec Def nomination so he picked a "badass" with any military history at all that, most importantly is on his TV a lot. That's it. If Hedgseth isn't on Fox News the president likely has no idea who this bum is.

Trump wants him to turn the army into professionals to a hoard that will brutalize anyone he tells them to, everyone on the planet should be horrified if this guy gets approved.

CARRRNE_ASADA - It depends a lot on the community TBH. In my community people tend to be more informed about current events and more liberal. In other communities people tend to be your stereotypical mindless grunts who do what they are told and think that the President is the end all be all authority to everything ever.

There also historically was a difference between officer (college educated) and enlisted (not always college educated), but I don't know if that still holds true.

I've met people of all backgrounds.

Personal opinion - I hate Trump, I hate that he pardoned war criminals in his first administration because that cheapened my service, it felt like we lost a lot of honor and dignity that day. I hate Hegseth as nominee too

I also hated that people were just openly spouting disinformation left and right about politics and what was going on in the country. Under Obama I only ever heard stuff like that from newly joined junior enlisted with no formal education or diverse exposure to different backgrounds. Under Trump I heard that kind of shit from senior officers, people who absolutely need to remain impartial to lead effectively.

Long story short it is a wholly mixed bag.

I've been feeling the pressure though. I am close to retirement. If it were just me I'd go to jail or whatever but toss in personal family and my kid's future and it becomes less of a black and white situation. That's especially confounded by the fact that our welfare systems in the country suck so if I fuck it up for my family it could mean my kid loses her free college money and medical insurance.

Apparently he refused to answer about whether or not he would shoot protestors on Trump's command.

If a former female military member who was sexually assaulted votes in the very guy who could have done it and also denied her having a military career, what hope do we have? He got her I assume softball questions answered and he said he's against woke in the military.

I cant believe this completely unqualified dumpster fire is going to be running the defense department.

I mean, I can totally believe it in the context of a Trump admin. and a MAGA GOP. I just cant believe we have allowed our government to deteriorate to this state generally.

There even was a 10 year waiting period I think between active military service and being a sec Def nominee. This had some detractors but ultimately it was waived for Austin. This was likely due to him being in the military for so long a waiting period wouldn't need to be here.

All of Trumps picks are going through besides maybe RFK Jr. (and only because some of his ideas are hated by Republicans).

The last election solidified what we all feared: the right is irredeemably corrupt. Beyond that, it also showed us that ignorance and apathy are so deeply ingrained in our society that the most brazen liar to ever run for office was able to dupe tens of millions of voters into supporting him.

And the sad part is I don't even know if he duped them. I suspect most knew he was lying and voted for him anyway. If that's the case, then that's indicative of a cultural rot that cannot be excised so long as the mainstream media values revenue over truth and social media is controlled by oligarchs who happily poison consumers with an incessant stream of hate and fear.

If that is not enough to wake this electorate up, then this group of voters is utterly hopeless.
