People would constantly do shit like offer a lvl 1 Turtwig and want a lvl 100 Palkia. Or they'll offer a shiny Darkrai but will want impossible pokemon like a level 10 Venusaur. It felt like 80% of the trades on that place were just trolls and I can legitimately count on 1 hand the amount of "normal" trades I got in Pokemon Pearl through the GTS

I miss the GTS, but I also don't miss the GTS >_> idk what trading is like in the modern games and in HOME. I get whatever pokemon I want through more sane means

This has not changed in Home's GTS. If anything vaguely interesting is available, its locked behind impossible requests like a level 10 Zekrom

Humanity never learns

Sun/Moon and Ultra Sun/Moon were potentially worse. The GTS got filled up by hackers who would put up shinies with reasonable or non-impossible trades, but if you tried accepting the trade, your game would crash and you'd end up temp-banned for about 15 minutes or an hour, I forget.

I used to complete a lot of those kinds of trades. In Platinum and Alpha Sapphire, I wanted to complete the foreign language entries in the Dex. Don't remember where my spreadsheet is that tracked my Platinum progress, but got to 91% overall in Alpha Sapphire, with 84.7% of the Dex having all 7 language entries. Italian and Korean were generally the toughest languages to get.

I have a number of event stuff from Gens 3 through 5. When someone made a stupid request for a Pokemon in Platinum, I could post a Gen 3 event like Aura Mew (distro cart), Wishmaker Jirachi (Colosseum pre-order bonus disc) or shiny Zigzagoon (Gamecube demo disc) since they didn't have an event ribbon. I'd ask for the desired Pokemon, then complete the trade.

The GTS in Alpha Sapphire blocked Mew and Jirachi, but the shiny Zigzagoon still worked, and I also have a 10th anniversary distro cart and could use legends from that as trade fodder.

Haven't done any Home trading yet, but hope to work on the foreign languages again. Looks like I'd have to do person to person stuff for Mythicals.

The GTS is STILL like this. Just as surely as Wonder Trade is full of route 1 trash, and shooter lobbies are full of swearing 8 year olds.

TBF lots of people with modded people play! So they practically have the entire index of pkmn for every region

even through wonder trade, Ill sometimes get lvl 100 pkmn despite trading a lvl 1 magikarp!

It was a thing back then to ask for something like an arceus in exchange for a Geodude, and a hacker would send it to you.

Goodtimes, and the GTS just failing half the time when you go to make a trade was also wonderful.

I used to just drop my duped shinies from gen 3 on the GTS to get trades so I could fill up my pokedex. Nothing impossible, but just annoying or version exclusive.

At least that meant it was possible to get a response on a reasonable trade if you were the one posting it.

It made it really tedious to search the GTS for reasonable trade is the issue, since you had to refresh the list and hope the new batch wasn't a bust.

I always assumed that at least some of these were just people making deliberately ridiculous trade offers/requests so they could trade between their own games on one system.

Definitely. But somehow other people managed to do it if you posted your own offer. Put your pokeyman in the GTS, put the game down for a while, and someone would magically wade through all the troll offers and find yours. It took more patience, but also less patience.

I mean with literally millions of people trading at the same time it's not hard to imagine people seeing legit offers instead of just flexing. With many of those being able to complete the requirements at that.

I made some of those bs trades get fulfilled

I traded up from my Diamond exclusive Pokemon all the way up to my desired Feebas to get a Milotic. Also got Tropius.

It was the only Pokemon where I got heavily into breeding and trading. I would breed the exclusive ones then hit the GameFAQs forums to trade. Ironically, once I traded for my preferred team, I stopped at the Elite 4 and never beat it.

Home's GTS does have one new and useful feature that the old GTS didn't have though: You can search for trades based on what you want to trade away rather than what you want back. So if you have, let's say, an extra Glastrier from the Sw/Sh DLC, you can search for people asking for a Glastrier that you can fulfill. And if among those trades asking for a Glastrier in return, you see, let's say, a shiny Tentacool, you can immediately trade your Glastrier for that shiny Tentacool.

Yes, I literally just traded a Glastrier for a shiny Tentacool as I typed this post.
