Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost joined 18 other Republican state attorneys general to push Costco Wholesale to abandon its diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, citing concerns about discrimination and legal risks.
In a letter sent to Costco CEO Ron Vachris, the attorneys general demanded that within 30 days, the popular retailer repeal its DEI policies or explain why it hasn't.
"Although Costcos motto is 'do the right thing,' it appears that the company is doing the wrong thing clinging to DEI policies that courts and businesses have rejected as illegal," the letter said. "Costco should treat every person equally and based on their merit, rather than based on divisive and discriminatory DEI practices."
Other companies, such as Meta, Ford Motor, JP Morgan Chase and Amazon, ditched their DEI programs or stopped participating in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's corporate equity index.
But Costco doubled down on its program. Ninety-eight percent of Costco shareholders voted against an investor proposal from a conservative think tank that urged management to investigate the business risks of its diversity initiatives.
The Republican attorneys general sent the letter after President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing government agency chiefs to dismantle DEI policies at federal agencies, federal contractors and in the private sector.
Yost, who is term limited from seeking another turn as Ohio AG, announced he's running for governor in 2026. Yost is expected to face competition in the GOP primary.

Pathetic.

Also I always like how the "champions of the free market" love to tell companies what to do.

Wow!
You really have to marvel at just how super racist this is.

This isn't the government saying a company has the freedom to hire whoever they want regardless of if they are racist.

This is the government threatening a store "YOU MUST BE RACIST OR ELSE!"

Just a fun reminder.... Trump was sworn in on MLK day (probably the LAST MLK day we'll ever have)

Easier to fool the masses when using the acronym DEI, cause once you gotta explain it then not everybody might be onboard. Same reason they call it obamacare instead of the affordable care act.

Saying WOKE, DEI is just whistleblowing for racism, sexism.

So apparently Republican AGs have plenty of time to sign something when it comes to attacking private businesses (which also have 1st Amendment rights thanks to their party) but no time to sign on a measure to prevent abuse of power and actual harm to their constituents that a funding freeze would cause. Got it.

They have imagined a world where they are promoting minorities to meet a quota. Costco mostly does things like workshops encouraging people of color to try and climb the ladder with advice on how to do so.

From a corporate perspective, its encouraging talented people to go into key positions to make the company money. These people are resources that may otherwise never be tapped simply because the people didn't know how to go about it. Hoarding that info for only white men is detrimental to actual success. Genghis Khan was successful for similar merit based promotions. Corporations want to be Genghis Khan

There isn't anything discriminatory about DEI programs. They were created in the first place because white business execs hired their incompetent and unqualified white friends and families instead of hiring other people based on merit. DEI was created to force them to hire minorities if they were qualified and not exclude them because they weren't white.

The GOP is just upset they aren't discriminating against minorities, which was the whole point of getting rid of DEI programs.

So basically it's the complete opposite of what these white nationalist fuckheads are saying. They lie as easily as they breathe, and their supporters don't give a shit about what's true.

It's so disheartening that so many companies are going along with it.

They don't have any grounds to make these types of demands of a private business. If it were a legal issue they would be bringing it up in court, but instead they're writing letters because they have nothing.

They are about anti-discrimination. The entire reason that these practices were adopted was because well qualified women and people of color were being skipped over for less qualified white men. But the GOP doesn't like that. They want all white men in their offices again.
