I have a light in my house (a ceiling fan) where LED bulbs don't work in it. It's been an increasing problem for the last few years every time I need to replace the bulb, because after I used up my stock of old-styled bulbs I basically started swapping out bulbs from lesser used devices in my house since new bulbs works fine in everything else. Now I'm out of bulbs and I don't think that any stores sell non-LED bulbs anymore. Any solution that doesn't involve a new light and an electrician?

Unless it's a sodium lamp fixture that requires a ballast, there's no reason an LED bulb can't work in a regular fixture.

Disconnect your power and try prying out the little tab at the bottom of the outlet, so it makes better contact with the bulb.

Do you still have one of the old bulbs? If so, does it list any specs on the bulb and what shape is the base?

Every common light bulb that I've seen in regular stores is LED. They pretty much phased out the older styles years ago.

I have also experienced the phenomenon where LED bulbs were dying *way* too fast in specific sockets. I assumed it had something to do with it being in an older house and there being some weirdness with the wiring, but have no specific knowledge to back that up. Just a frustrating reality where only a couple specific fixtures would refuse to not burn out.

The main cause of fast LED burnout is an enclosed fixture. They can't take the heat.

It's not a question of them burning out too fast, but every time I try an LED bulb in this fan one of two things happens:
  • The middle glows very faintly but not enough to illuminate the whole bulb, much less any surrounding area, as if the bulb was dead
  • It's bright enough but constantly flickers, as in multiple times per second, like a strobe light, aka unusable
This has happened with literally every LED bulb I've ever tried in the entire time that I've lived here. So that's why I made the general assumption that the issue was with the type of bulb. I can't rule out physical damage (I mean obviously it's defective in some way, just not sure which way), though that just raises the new question of how much I can attempt to fix it myself if it is something inside the socket.

Is it on a dimmer switch? I have a couple lamps where LED bulbs will flicker like that if they're plugged into a dimmer switch.

Check for a dimmer switch, turn off the breaker and check the tab on the inside, then spray electric contact cleaner in there.
