I feel bad for keeping her inside. She's been on the streets for over 2 years, she might have siblings still out there, and she yearns to get out again. Yesterday, before giving her medicine, she darted out of her room as soon as I opened the door and I had to chase her a little to catch her, and ever since then, whenever we open the door to her room, she tries making a break for it. I'm worried that she'll run outside sometime in the future while I or my nieces are exiting or entering our house.

First of all, this topic is helping me not lose all faith in humanity.

I love how it started out with you just feeding her to her giving all of you motivation.

Don't feel bad about keeping her inside. When you are feeling like that, just think of the alternatives. She could be outside getting into fights with strays, for example.

Would you say the cats have access to a good amount of high places around the house?

Well, my boys jump on the dining room table, windowsills, and cat tree sometimes, but no other place any higher is accessible to them for safety reasons. The room Po is staying in still has my SO's computer desk, which has rather high shelves on it, but Po hasn't gotten any higher than the desk itself, and my boys haven't been on it since before my SO passed but also never went any higher than the desk.

I think part of it is more that she's getting comfortable and exploratory in your house.

Like, "new cat introduction protocol" usually says keep them in one room for a few days, then let them explore at their own pace.

So it's less that she wants out and more that she's feeling safe and wants to look around.

I understand why you need to do it, naturally, gotta finish the quarantine.

But I'd put more weight on that possibility than on her wanting to get out, especially if she's got litter available.

Hopefully she will also make use of them to feel less stressed out when they are getting used to each other.

Well no worries, since I have no intention of letting her outside. My first two cats were also strictly inside cats and lived to be over 17 and 18 respectively. My boys now are also strictly inside, though they'll try poking their heads out the door when I get home from work.

I don't want to risk her outside at all since she could easily pick up something and pass it onto the boys.

Po is still doing well and her final medication was yesterday. She's got an appointment in 2 weeks to get another necessary injection, and they'll check her stool as well to see if she's worm-free. On April 1, however, she'll be going to the vet for her chip and possible spaying. Considering how quickly she took to using the litter box and that she hasn't gone into heat, it's possible she was once housed and spayed already.

I want to keep her isolated until I know she's worm-free, but that appointment isn't until April 14. Whenever Po is near the door of the room she's in and either of the boys are nearby, they'll growl and hiss at her.

Here's her battle scar.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/3/3bec2ec4.jpg

We tried using the cone on her, to prevent licking and pulling on the stitches, but she just kept walking backwards, so I cut an opening in an old sock to put around her instead.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/b/be4be5df.jpg

However, she was able to move it aside and get to the stitches again, so I looked up how to make an overall for a cat from a shirt, and my niece did the work on it.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/5/5dd98320.jpg

She doesn't like it either and walks around like a drunk with it on, but it's our best solution so far.

She'll be on pain medication now for about 10 days starting tomorrow morning. My nieces don't get to bed until about 4am, so they'll be giving it to her before bed, then again about 8 hours later, and so on until it's done.

We can't really supervise her 24/7 so I can only hope she doesn't do anything to get herself hurt while I'm at work and while my nieces are asleep.

Man, I feel bad. Po is angry and confused and is hissing and growling at us and thwapping her tail around. I just want to be with her as much as possible so she's not scared but need to go to bed soon and then to work in the morning. My nieces have been checking on her every 30 or so minutes, but Po just seems miserable.

That means she is uncomfortable obviously. Have they had their pain meds? The first few days you have to give them the meds every 12 hours or so so they arent in pain.

If not that does the area look swollen or inflamed? Hopefully they havent got it infected, or pulled something loose.

Yeah, she's got pain medication. We were told to start this morning, so my nieces gave it to her at 3:50am before they went to bed, then again 8 hours later, and will continue every 8-ish hours.

Yeah, when I checked on her this morning before work, she was looking and acting better and rubbed up against me when I put food in her bowl.

I meant to comment earlier, sorry.

It's not uncommon for cats to be stand-offish after a vet visit/surgery, because it's a pretty abrupt shift in their day-to-day. Not like full-on traumatic but it tends to throw them off and freak them out for a while.

Mine usually hid away and wanted little to do with me for a good 12-18 hours after their surgery.

Just remember, this is temporary. You're doing everything right and she'll have her freedom soon enough, it's just gonna be less than ideal for a few days.

But even if she's irritated and a little cooped up, she's safe and supported, she's in a better place than she would be without you.

Po managed to get out of the overall at some point while I was at work and my nieces were still sleeping, but has been doing well. We're going to keep it off except for when we're asleep, as my nieces will be checking on her constantly.

While petting Po a little bit ago, I found a lump near her left armpit and called the vet about it. They told me they didn't feel a lump when she was brought in on Tuesday, but to keep an eye on it if it starts getting bigger or irritating to Po, in which case to call them back and make an appointment about it, otherwise they'll check it on the 15th when the stitches are to be removed.

Definitely keep an eye on it as surgery can cause blood clots, but then it could be just a lymph gland too as she could be fighting something.

I found a lump under Po's right armpit as well just a few minutes ago. Feels the same size and location as on her left-side. I know they weren't there when we first took her in, but I'm assuming they're swollen lymph nodes.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/3/33707944.jpg

The ones I'm feeling align with the Axillary Node in the pic, and three causes could be a normal reaction to antigenic stimulus, an infection, or cancer, so hopefully it's just a reaction to something that went on during her surgery and nothing worse.

It may be "no shit, Sherlock" to say this, but don't just keep an eye on the lumps. Watch how she acts, too. If she's too lethargic, that might be a warning sign to take her in.

She's been more restful than usual but I thought it was because of the medication and trying to recover. My nieces told me when I got home that Po was being cuddly when they checked on her earlier, and when I checked on her myself she was napping, woke up to see me, then curled back up to rest some more.
