This is a stupid argument. Jesuits are scientists. Thomas Aquinas, perhaps one of the most renowned Christian writers, advocated for men to harness science to better understand the world that God created.

Edit: I guess at its core the catholic church held political and economic influence on top of being the religious representation it is, someone was bound to disagree or outright oppose policy or economics pushed by the church and found what they thought was more in line with god.

But I still believe lots of people just wanted the influence for themselves, to this day, newer and newer branches of Christianity get funded for absolutely no reason other than their founders to wield power over their followes

Very early Christians were just followers of Christ and believed he was divine. They didn't identify as Catholic.

Seeing a physician for a health issue is not contrary to the Bible. One of the gospel writers, Luke, was himself a physician.

I have a lot of beefs with the Catholic church, as I was raised Catholic and hate a lot of the stuff they drilled into my head, but I wouldn't consider them to be one of the sects of Christianity that oppose science. They support modern medicine and are even okay with things like evolution (and there are more Catholics who are left leaning than most other branches of Christianity: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2016/02/23/u-s-religious-groups-and-their-political-leanings/ ...hell, Biden is Catholic).

It's typically the super fundie evangelical protestant types who are disgustingly anti-science.

Surprising to see CE to be so against this topic, though. I've seen y'all blindly hate on religion before.

My old pastor said that God gave mankind a mind to understand science and our bodies, and he expects us to use those before relying on miracles.

He compared it to someone being washed away in a flood, and floating past a boat with someone trying to help them, but they refuse and say that God will send help instead. He always preached to have faith, but not to be stupid. I really enjoyed his way of thinking.

Catholic Church has pretty much always been in favor of science, as long as that science doesn't contradict with Catholic doctrine. That doctrine has changed over the centuries, but to the best of my knowledge they've never really had any issues with medical science (at least on the accuracy side of things, there are some specific things they are opposed to on an ethical side like abortion).
