Some miscellaneous thoughts on the movie.

Everyone was well cast, even all the side characters like the workers at the Daily Bugle.

The music was phenomenal and not afraid to be loud when needed. You don't really seem to hear such music in modern movies.

The cinematography is for the most part well done. Fights are easy to follow even when quick jump cuts are used. It is a shame so many modern movies can't do this right. (Not sure if modern directors don't understand cinematography or its done on purpose save money on CGI)

I forgot how brutal some of the movie was. Especially when Peter is hunting the man who killed Uncle Ben and the final fight in the ruins with Green Goblin.

The movie does a good job blending seriousness but still retaining a lot of the comic book cheesiness thought a lot of the movie.

When I first saw the movie I thought the Green Goblin was rather mediocre villain. How wrong old me was. He steals the show every scene he is in.

Most of special effects and CGI holds up pretty well. The only real big exception is when the Green Goblin is flying around in some parts of the parade fight. It looks really bad.

It is refreshing to watch a super hero movie that doesn't try to be a huge quip fest all the time.

I'm glad they essentially made Peter Parker be a huge dweeb throughout the whole movie. He has character growth but he doesn't transform into a flawless "cool" guy.

Something else I remembered, why did every movie years after the Matrix come out have to do a bullet time event? Spider-Man dodging a bunch of those flying cutters in slow motion had to be the most eye rolling part of the movie.

A scene like that kinda makes sense for Spider-Man to be fair, shows off his reaction times, agility and spider sense, all key powers of his.

Good point. At least they didn't have a 360 camera dodge. Still seemed to be based off bullet time though.

Although of all the superhero franchises, Spider-Man is one that would be remaining true to the character by being a quipfest

Trust me, I agree with you generally speaking about those sorts of effects being used at the time. Spidy is just an obvious situation where it was warranted. I imagine you probably wouldn't have had a problem with the scene at all if such scenes weren't so over-used even in situations where they weren't warranted.

I kind of don't want to rewatch it, as I remember loving it when it came out, and I'm worried about tarnishing that. I rewatched the second and third one a few years ago (some friends were watching through all of the Spider-Man movies at the time, but I missed the first one) and they were worse than I remembered. Although that said, even when they first came out I had issues with them that I didn't have with the first one, so maybe I'm worrying for nothing.

Well, that's my new trivia of the month. Just rewatched a clip of it and yeah, that was pretty good. "Good reflexes" indeed.

It wasn't quite like a tower; most of it did land on the tray, but one of the items did land on top of the other.

I haven't watched any of these movies in a long time and had really fond memories of 2 and remember 1 being ok. Was honestly impressed how good 1 is. I wonder when I watch 2 if it will be as good as a I remember.

I remember 3 being a mess but very entertaining.

*Spoilers for Spider-Man 2 ahead*

I watched about first 30ish minutes of 2 and this movie is so far not even close to the quality of the 1st one. All it is basically repeating that Peter's life sucks because he is Spider-Man. The pacing is terrible. Stopped watching it, maybe will finish it later.

Macy Gray was a big deal at the time - her first album in 1999 hit #4 on the US Charts and her 2001 album hit #11. The film was mostly shot in 2001, so yeah that makes sense - they were trying to get her 2nd album to be a bigger hit, and she was signed to a Sony record label at the time, so it does all fit together.

As to the movie...I gotta say it's one of the best superhero origin story movies, and Spider-Man 2 was even better. Shame that Sony's meddling ruined Spider-Man 3

I've already seen Spider-Man 2, granted it was 20 years ago. I remember it was my favorite of the trilogy. That said, the pacing in the first 30 minutes is really bad. 1 knows how to move while it doesn't feel like anything has too little screen time. There are too many sequences that relay the same key information in 2: Peter Parker's life sucks because he is Spider-Man. This was pretty obvious with the pizza delivery scene in the opening, we don't need to see 10 million ways this can repeat. I stopped watching after Peter was late to the play because he had to do Spider-Man business. So far the only scene that wasn't about his life sucking was the introduction of Otto.

I saw Spider-Man 3 once and it was for free at an early employee screening since I was working at a theater at the time. I have had no desire to ever revisit it since. I only own a copy on 4K because it was the only way to get the first two films and I've never even taken the disc out of the case. I've watched every other Spider-Man film dozens of times.
