Genesis is like the gluten free version of SNES. It offers something unique that is very important to some, but overwhelming, people are gonna be like why would I want that.

And the first Mortal Kombat. There was supposed to be an updated version of Mortal Kombat for SNES that had the blood & violence re-added and a bunch of other new stuff but it was canceled because they were worried it would eat in to the sales of Mortal Kombat II.

I don't even disagree entirely. Its not bad. But its also basically one of the earliest major console "for the sake of graphics and effects" games out there, aside from Sonic (which itself was designed almost completely around emphasizing the Genesis's capabilities itself).

Still, they are all good nostalgia and they aren't outright bad games, even if mechanically something like SMB3 was superior.

After the NES I became a Sega kid, with the Genesis, Game Gear, and Saturn. Never owned an SNES unfortunately, but I don't doubt that it is the better system. I liked them both.

Agreed. I had a SNES and whenver I'd go over to the house of a friend/relative who had a Genesis, I'd be wowed at playing something different, but it felt lacking. There's some great games on it, no doubt, but I'll always pick SNES over Genesis. Plus, besides a few notable exceptions, most of the music and sound effects on the Genesis sounded like farts.

The "super-no friendo" is a funny insult though.

Let me put it this way

To get the Genesis to be better, you have to do some pretty crazy stuff.

Genesis has better platformers in which your character's feet turn into a blur when you run fast.

Genesis has better RPGs where you can move the characters around a square grid in battle.

Genesis has better beatemups that aren't Ninja Turtles games.

Personally the snes has the better games, while the genesis has a lot of faithful arcade ports, up to the point where the genesis gives you the arcade at home feeling a lot better imo. I like them both, they just have their own quarks.

I dunno, I think Genesis did Earthworm Jim, Chuck Rock, Flashback and Another World better. Plus Genesis had Jurassic Park and Rampage Edition while Super Nintendo had a really really awful Jurassic Park game in Jurassic Park 2. Oh and also Ronald McDonald Treasure Land Adventure is kino and one of the best Treasure 16bit games that did not need to go as hard as it did. Makes Global Gladiators look like a big wet dookie.

I got a SNES at launch, and a Genesis the next year. Even though I liked Genesis, I could still tell it was inferior in a lot of ways.

I mean, it was almost five-year-old hardware by then.

Genesis doesn't have DKC2 so yeah might be true

In my opinion the SNES was still the better console overall. There was just a wider 3rd party game collection to chose from even if we ignore rpgs.

The genesis unquestionably did sports games and shoot'em ups better. Any type of game that required fast movement like gunstar heroes n' alien soldier and the genesis was on top of that.

*I admit I grew up spoiled a bit when it comes to gaming since my family had both. The NES was my brothers, the SNES my dad bought for me like a month after it released in north america because I was in a real bad car accident and the SNES was basically a get well present. The genesis was my brother's that he got with sonic 2 and streets of rage 2.

We rented a ton of games for both consoles and more often than not the SNES had the better version of the 3rd party game was the same exact type of game. Stuff like sunset riders, battletoads and double dragons, lion king and zombies ate my neighbors *earthworm jim and mortal kombat 1 being the biggest exceptions. The genesis held it's own and at times had the better version if the 3rd party game was a completely different game than what the SNES got, like with jurassic park*

When I was a kid I used to think that konami games like contra 3 and super castlevania 4 was automatically better than what the genesis got, but as I got older and revisited these games my opinion changed in that contra hard corps was better than contra 3 imo, and that castlevania bloodlines was just as good as super castlevania 4.

I had both growing up (it was the 90s right around the time the genesis had a price drop. I was pretty lucky my parents knew I loved video games).

I have so many fun memories with the SNES. Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong plus tons of JRPGs!

The Genesis had Sonic? Like as a kid I was not good at games at all and I felt like the genesis games while funI only played like the first level many 2 in any game because I couldnt get any further.

The only thing Genesis has over SNES is having a better Contra game

I'd say I preferred SNES. I wasn't into sega games until Dreamcast. I barely know any of the first party Sega games outside of newer ones. Hell, I used to think Earthworm Jim was a Sega game...

but meh, nothing hits me nostalgia-wise except for Sonic. Sonic felt like the only game that mattered.

Sure, I enjoyed Phantasy Star but I didn't know about those games until after I got older. Same with Star Ocean.

SNES had Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Mario Kart and that's just first party. I had a lot of joy with some of the other SNES games, as well.

I do like a lot of the Sonic knock-offs too, but I don't really remember too much about those games. I had a Dreamcast and enjoyed Crazy Taxi, Power Stone, and Shenmue, though.

Yakuza games and ATLUS games(this doesn't count, does it?) go hard, though.

Of course. The SNES library is vastly superior, and even when the same third party was on both, the SNES version was almost always better. There are exceptions like Aladdin and MK1, but theyre rare. For the record, I had both.

My view ( which I know no one is asking for, but I'm going to give it anyway), which I posted on NGG back in the day, is that if you want to be bored to death by RPG's buy a SNES, if you want genuine arcade thrills, buy a Genesis.

i like a lot of genesis games, but snes has games i cant live without

Genesis always had the better sports titles.

The Genesis generally had better games that were designed to be beaten in one sitting i.e. no save states. And SRPGs.

I will concede that Special Edition is a very good version of the game.

That said, SNES still had the enhanced color pallet and generally looked more "painted".

Apparently the "perfect" version is a super hard to find Windows 95 port that had pretty much everything including the enhanced graphics. The PC version distributed now is just a straight DOS port of the Sega CD version.
