He showed up as a villain-of-the-week in the old 90's era X-Men series. He was purple in that, but lacked the menace that the latest version had.

It's basically a whole new storyline, only her history with the Purple Man is kept intact. And even then, he never actually raped her in the comic (a wise writing decision IMO), he just made her want him and then forced her to watch when he raped other women. And I forget how she escapes him in the show, but I imagine she isn't beaten into a coma by the X-Men when he loses his temper and tells her to kill the Scarlet Witch.

The vast majority of Alias is her doing private eye work that runs into superhero problems. Like the first story arc is about her being hired to find a woman's missing sister, but it turns out to be a setup. The woman is actually Captain America's girlfriend. It's all kind of a convoluted plot to cause a scandal and make a business guy's preferred presidential candidate win because the current president isn't following through on his promises. It leads to this hilarious bit:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/b/bf7edf66.jpg

Fun additional fact: Jessica was a big fucking dweeb in high school and she had a huge crush on Peter Parker.

I can only assume so, but any prominent examples?

The only thing I know is seeing a cover where she had a baby with Luke cage and all the avengers are cooing over the baby.

I assume the tone of the show is completely different from the comics? Because the show is like 70% about straight up rape and dealing with being a survivor. Some dark stuff.

There's more of that than you would think actually. Alias was part of an "R-rated" line of Marvel comics. It's probably never as dark and serious as the show, but a fair bit of it is her dealing with what happened with Purple Man.

I've actually been to the aquarium Jessica went to in that one episode. But it's not in NYC. It's on Long Island in a town called Riverhead.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Island_Aquarium_and_Exhibition_Center

Seems like its name changed since I went there as a kid though. Used to be called Atlantis Marine World.

That's... not much better. I don't really get "wise writing decision" vibe from that it's also pretty bad.

Also that bottom plot kinda sounds like punisher season 2?

I say wise because I don't really trust a Marvel comic to do a rape survivor storyline, even if it is a more serious, mature run. It's still extremely traumatic, but having even that small degree of separation between her experience and outright rape was just...wise.

Ah that's why. So it's... part of the ultimate universe? Or another instance of marvel wanting to go dark?

No, it's part of the mainline universe, they were basically just allowed to say the f-word and have the protagonist be an alcoholic.

His powers are a bioengineered virus that effects the brain. JJ gained resistance to it though iirc it's not fully explained but most likely through the nature of her own powers.

Ohhh, right. I remember assuming that it was just overexposure. He never kept one person around that long, she just grew immune to it.

I don't know how the comics work, but I like the angle of the show. Besides it making sense that one would gain a little resistance to it over time, what broke the camel's back for her was when he had her kill Luke Cage's semi-girlfriend and that just completely broke something inside her, the whole "straight up killing someone in cold blood" thing, and probably made her disassociate long enough to straight up break free from his control

They're pheromone-based. So people that don't need to breathe aren't affected.

Telepaths can also resist him. This is how Jessica ends up immune to him in the comic. As part of an apology for that whole "beat her into a coma" thing, Jean Gray gives her a psychic trigger to resist him

I think in the TV show, she snapped out of his control immediately after killing that woman under his influence. I think it was the trauma from it that broke the connection. But also, it's been several years since I've seen it.

Another thing different is the whole Jessica Jones and Patsy/Trish Walker adopted sister thing. I don't think they even had a relationship in the comics, but I could be wrong. Patsy's family definitely didn't adopt Jessica in the comics though. Also, Trish Walker/Hellcat losing her shit and going villain at the end of the last season.

It was that plus over-exposure that made the pheromones stop working, I believe.

The whole "immune to Iocane Powder" thing.

Ohhh, yeah, I don't remember Trish in Alias at all. Insofar as her role exists, it's actually Captain Marvel. Carol is Jessica's best friend.

There's a scene where she uses the bathroom and is frustrated to learn she doesn't have toilet paper, so she just pulls her pants up. Obviously the intent is that she peed, but it's funny to imagine she just took a raw shit and then didn't wipe her ass.
