Ive been thinking about getting a NAS for a while and finally ordered it a couple days ago. I was planning to use it to back my computer up and store videos on it. Booted up my computer today and Windows wont start any more, lol.

Once the NAS gets here, I can probably put a windows 10 iso on it and boot from that. Hopefully I can format my hard drive and reinstall windows.

Probably gonna build a new computer some time this year. This one is 10 years old and cant run Windows 11.

It's like a personal server.
You can use it to make your own personal cloud.

Same shit happened to me like two weeks ago. I got a fat 8TB and some RAM to put into my 13 year old build and I think I borked the mobo trying to set the RAM, F.

Network access storage. Basically a block of HDDs or SSDs that sit on the network waiting to be filled. It's pretty overkill for home solutions, you can just as easy setup your PC to do the same thing.

I set up my NAS a year before hard drives became dirt cheap. Paid $200 a pop for 8 TB drives

Edit: Oh looks like prices have returned to that amount. After I bought mine I saw larger drives for cheaper

What brand did you go with TC and how large is it? I've been using an enterprise Synology with 40tb I got from work for about 6 years now. I love it.

Somewhat true but it's good to have a separate place to back up your files. Also if you have multiple people in the house using your NAS, you don't want it to be the pc you're using to game or watch TV or whatever on cause of bandwidth limitations.

Considering a NAS is best run with a purpose built NAS focused OS you really can't do "the same thing" not to mention a NAS is likely to be kept on 24/7 and is going to draw significantly less power than the primary PC would

Disagree. It was a pain in the ass when my PC was the media centre for the family. Now that I have a NAS my PC is MY PC once again and having that 20 TB of storage has been great for media streaming, backup storage and projects I am planning.

It's really not a bad idea to have some sort of home storage solution that isn't just your own personal computer.

Somehow, the computer booted after like 10 restarts... I think this hard drive might be on its last leg. Not sure if I want to put another hard drive in it or just wait and build another computer in a few months.

Seems like my PC is gonna live a little longer. Its booting up just fine now. Got all my files copied to the NAS now, though. This is pretty nice. Probably should have done this a long time ago.

Yeah, good idea. I created a bootable flash drive, but an image would be good, too.

I had an 8 year old QNAP nas which died recently so I recently got a Synology NAS as a replacement the other day. However, about a week after I got it, Synology announced their new models which I had been waiting for -_-

Not a fan of Synology and their liking trying to force you to buy their branded drives.

Yeah, the computer is still in a bad place. What timing, though. Yesterday was probably my last chance to get the files off of it and I did that just in time.

Not gonna put much more time into trying to fix it. Just gonna wait until I build a new machine later this year.

I could see myself getting a Mac Mini in the mean time though.

i think out of the off the shelf nases their software seems the best. ive grown a bit of disdain for qnap recently, and out of the other brands the synology software seemed the best. i work in IT so the less amount of time im configuring my home gear the better I think. ill see how i feel in ~8-10 years when this one dies. maybe by then terramaster or ugreen will be more mature and i can run truenas on them and have it be as reliable as a synology. i really just wanted as little DIY at the moment as I could get away with
