There is no limit to how many songs you may nominate! 2: It would be helpful if you nominated your songs in Blocks of five. This is not a requirement--even a single song is welcome, as is any other amount that isn't a multiple of five--it's just easier on us if you did. 3: Songs under ten minutes preferred. Songs up to thirty minutes allowed, though try to keep the 10+ minute long songs to one per Block if possible. 4: There are no restrictions on what songs may be nominated. Nominate an artist's entire discography, ten versions of the same song, whatever amuses you. We want a ridiculously large amount of nominations, so we're not in the habit of rejecting anything. Likewise, we'll accept anything that could charitably be called music: commercially released tracks, VGM, background noise, commercial jingles, AI content, mashups, parodies, etc. 5: The first phase of nominations will last until June 5th, 2025. Even if we somehow get 1,250 songs before that point, noms will remain open to try to give everyone a chance to post whatever they want. Putting all of our names into the topic title was a bit unwieldy, so this seemed like the easiest solution. All the others (Kari [shortened to Kay at past topics], Katie, Ray, Chaos, Ashe... I feel like I'm forgetting someone...) are welcome to make an apppearance, but they are rarely seen and trying to create an acronym for everyone is also unwieldy. - Q: Why Blocks of five? A: Inspired by azuarc's Reverse Rankings, it's easier to get a handle on a large batch of songs by working through them in smaller groups. The plan for our first trip through the list of nominations is to listen to every song in a Block in nominated order while typing up initial thoughts, then immediately listen a second time in order from worst-to-best before giving them a preliminary score & some extra thoughts. By giving every song two listens, it gives more of a chance for us to find something we want to say about them and should help stabilize the initial score. Also, some people enjoy creating mini-playlists with themes or gimmicks. That's obviously not a requirement and most Blocks will likely not have any type of theme, but if you want to create a gimmick or a five song playlist that flows in a certain way, then have at it! - Q: What happens if I nominate a number of songs that is not a multiple of five? Like, eight or something? A: In that case, the first five nominations would fill a Block by themselves. The other three would be part of an unfinished Block that we'd leave open, in case you ever came back to nominate more songs and fill it... if you don't--which is totally fine--then we'll just get someone else to fill any remaining slots at your unfinished Block when nominations are closing down. - Q: Does a song's ranking within a Block impact anything? A: Not directly. If you put five perfect scoring songs in the same Block, they'd all be given perfect scores and in the running for first place. - Q: Can I nominate an entire album? A: Yes! However, we will still divide the tracks into Blocks of five which will likely require some additional songs to be added onto albums to reach a multiple of five. Apologies for the inconvenience. - Q: What are some valid excuses to put multiple long songs in the same BlocK? A: You're nominating multiple songs from the same album and hearing the songs in close proximity to each other is an integral part of the listening experience ; you're only nominating one Block (or part of one Block) and thus can't spread them out ; you have a theme in mind for the Block of songs and it doesn't work if you split the songs into multiple Blocks ; your two long songs aren't that far over the limit (say, a 12 minute and a 15 minute song) and the other three songs are very short, so the total length is actually shorter than some standard Blocks. Seriously, if you really want to nominate long songs together, we'll work with you. We need the nominations more than we need to enforce rules. Splitting your long songs up would be a gesture of goodwill on your part, but if you have a reason not to, then go ahead and do what you want! We'll still be listening to everything at least one more time to work out their Final Scores, but we should have enough data by then for the ranking to start. Long answer: After the initial scores, all songs will be divided into several different tiers based on their initial scores (0 to 100, with decimal points allowing infinite numbers between those two extremes). This is the same scoring system as past rankings, but it's been divided into additional tiers due to the sheer volume of songs this time. Presently there are 22 tiers, though we'll likely add a few more to properly deal with circumstances where a specific tier has way too many songs crammed into it. We'll then start listening to songs at the lowest tier. If we like the song more than we did previously, we'll quietly move it up to whatever tier feels more appropriate and revisit it when we get there. If we stand by our initial verdict, we immediately post the song and eliminate it. Once all songs from a tier have been eliminated, we'll post a proper update showing a song's exact placement in the ranking & then move on to the next tier! ...This does mean that songs will not be posted in the exact order they technically place in the ranking. Sorry, but it's much faster to decide if a song is being eliminated as part of a given tier & then fine tune the list once we're out of that tier. We followed this procedure for most of the last ranking and everything worked out. (Things will turn into a traditional ranking once we hit the absolute highest tier. Hopefully we have a reasonable amount of perfect scoring songs to make that doable, but hey, we'll figure it out when we get there.) On a related note, songs may not be moved down a tier under this system. The only options we have are to eliminate it at the tier it was originally placed into or move it to a higher tier. This change feels good and also streamlines the process greatly. Also, we reserve the right to retroactively move songs up even after they've been eliminated; you know how it is, sometimes you don't realize how good a song is until it randomly gets stuck in your head weeks later or something. - Q: Why 1,250 songs? A: As far as we know, the largest completed ranking is NFUN's 1000 VGM ranking. We want to break the record and a 25% increase feels significant. Se7en did attempt a 1,300 song ranking, but that one didn't finish after he lost all the work he had done and had no way to recover it. I suppose we could have gone for 1,300 in his honor, but 1,250 is quite enough for us to be satisfied & it feels nice to let him maintain the record for most ambitious music ranking attempted. - Q: Why now? A: We've wanted to do an "at least 1,000 song ranking" for a long time now, but I kinda tried to justify our numerical rating system containing infinite possible results to someone by explaining that it would be needed if we ever did a ranking this large. Which made me realize that I'd be a liar if we never actually made an attempt at doing so. Without his support, we wouldn't have built up the confidence to try a solo ranking. azuarc who was running VGMC when we got into it; keeping up with the massive amount of noms there helped prove to us that we loved listening to a ridiculous amount of songs and that we could pull off crazier rankings without getting burnt out. And some additional special thanks to azuarc for running the recent Reverse Rankings which indirectly taught us a better way of going through a large list of songs & also showed us how to format some things on the spreadsheet! (Incidentally, apologies if I accidentally changed anything on the 2025 sheet recently... I made a copy of it to see how some things were done, but may have accidentally hit something on the keyboard while cloning the sheet.) ..And technically if I didn't attend that listening party he hosted for the Reverse Ranking, people wouldn't have questioned our scoring system and thus inspired me to stop listing this as a "hypothetical dream project" & make a real go at it. ...Huh. UF8 05/05/25 11:13:44 PM #39:	UF8 posted... just for reference oops i hit post before i was going to finish this just for reference: In SECTOR starts at around 0:32 in the meme to mori to kaiko tr01 & tr02 video. strictly speaking it's kind of just one song (with about a "cluster" being the intro for it), but at the same time it's officially two songs (or, well, tracks) so it feels a bit cheap to add anything else to that block. For the 3rd live (Connect), voices feat. kinu starts at around 4:19, and its version of Virtual YouTuber no Inochi starts at 10:16. Whether this is the true setlist or not is unclear, but for the 4th live (Future), its version of Hibiki appears to start at around 1:33, and its version of Virtual YouTuber no Inochi starts at 2:50. For the 5th live, it's unclear exactly when the transition between Calling and Kizuna is, I'd guess probably 1:39 though. Virtual YouTuber no Inochi is at 6:00, and then Hajimari no Owari is at 10:56. The music video version adds an intro so it's slightly longer than it. The 6th live's version of GHOST is mixed together with Guidance (hence the reason Guidance is listed as track 0), but starts at around 2:41 or so. I just realized I did my artist/titles backwards... It's fine, you were consistent in your formatting and provided all the data we needed.
