As an experiment, Rae added a very long "write up" to Gamecube Startup under the Inividual Unnominated Songs tab. Is it theoretically readable for anyone? We're trying to keep all of our actual write ups stored on a backup Google Sheet; if anything goes really wrong in real life and we have to stop working on this suddenly, we can just make that sheet public & release all the work we had done. ...But if no one can see write ups posted this way, especially the really long ones with a lot of line breaks, then we're going to have to come up with another solution. ...It doesn't seem to be working on phones (at least, through any browser we've tried; a sheets app may or may not work), but we're hoping it's at least readable for anyone on a computer?

...On a related note, we'll probably wind up taking today off as well. Still trying to get everything properly set up (copying write ups to our private sheet, finishing all organizational prep work that should have been done before we actually started) which is taking a while.

For me, on my computer, it's there but almost impossible to actually read in practice. I have found two methods that allow for comfortably reading it, though - 1) Ctrl+C copying the write-up and pasting it into a word processor, or 2) copying the entire Individual Unnominated Songs sheet and then placing my cursor anywhere within the copy's write-up.

So not ideal situations, but good enough for our purposes. Everything should be fine, but knowing that we have an option to quickly post everything in a catastrophic emergency is a bit of a relief.

Well, if you wanted to add one extra Block comprised of unnominated songs, that would be fine. It is a bit late, but the list still isn't finalized yet & you did express an interest in making such a Block... seeing as you couldn't very well create it until people were done removing songs, there's probably a bit of a loophole about how by definition that Block of yours had to be blank until now-ish.

21 Blocks with preliminary write ups. Some things came up today, but we still got through one which is infinitely more progress than we've made the past few days.

25 Blocks. Did three Blocks today which may have been a bit much... but we're going to busy tomorrow and might not even get one in, so... I'm gonna sleep now, thank you.

No progress today either. Tuesday was indeed too busy to sneak in a Block and I apparently forgot to charge the tablet, which made it impossible to do anything today... I do have it charged now, so hopefully things get back on track tomorrow.

29 Blocks have preliminary scores & write ups! If you think about it as more than 10% of the way there, it feels like good progress!

I believe we're at 33 Blocks complete at the moment. Though we've done quite a few of the longer Blocks, so it's a bit more progress than it seems.

3 more Blocks should put us at 36. 180 songs in total.

39 Blocks, as our current pace of alternating between 1 Block and 2 Block days continues unabated.

5 more Blocks should put us at 44. We may or may not be taking a couple days off here, so umm... I'll keep you all informed. Personally hoping to continue with at least one Block per day, but it's going to depend on a few different things and I'm not really in a position where I can promise anything one way or the other.

45; one Block in two days isn't great, but it's arguably more progress than I expected, so I can't be too disappointed.

Is this still taking nominations, or are you just giving status updates on the ranking?

Mostly progress updates because they motivate me to keep working. If I could just ditch and read my book without anyone knowing, it'd be a bit too easy to slack off...

But the list still isn't finalized, so if you wanted to add a Block (or two. Or three. Probably not more than three at this point.) then you're welcome to do so. There's still an open invitation for Metalmind to add a Block or two of un-nominated songs if she wishes (since it would have been impossible to do that before things were done being removed*), so it's not like I'd be making an exception for you specifically or anything.

*Technically Ema is still at 10 Blocks and hasn't finished cutting down to 8, but Flutter is refusing to press the issue on the grounds that there's still months before we finish everyone else's Blocks for us to really need Ema's to be finalized.

...Of course several months from now it'll be too awkward to bring up, so I suppose Flutter is just going to ignore everything entirely. Not sure how that's going to work.

48; one Block a day still is not great, but technically twice the progress we were making. So, if you look at it from that perspective, it's not so bad.

It's a lot of blocks to get through, might not be as fast as you hoped, but one a day is still solid progress! Better to pace yourself than get burned out.

Thank you for the support! Though things are a bit on pause right now; we're focusing on other topics and things for a few weeks. Which really sets things back more than I'd like, but I'm outvoted and unlikely to be able to force progress until the end of the month. Apologies.

I don't really know what the purge rate is and have a poor sense of time, so I think I'll bump this for now.

My original notion about a Block comprised of unnominated songs was that it was something I should nominate either before the official close of nominations or else not at all. And so my plan had been to determine the contents of such a Block based on what looked likely to get cut at that point.

Ideally (imo) I'd be using/have used all this extra time to listen to all the unnominated songs, but I haven't been and continue not to be in a good place for that. As things stand, I, uh, have four songs in mind? Hoping to decide on a fifth sooner rather than later, ack.

60 Blocks, which puts us at 300 songs with preliminary scores/write-ups.

...Which really isn't that much in the grand scheme of things, but considering that this topic series started with 200 & 300 song Rankings, it feels like a significant milestone anyway.

That is a colossal amount of music just to listen to, to say nothing of doing write-ups for, in a relatively short amount of time. I'm actually impressed :)

Thank you all again! 63 Blocks now; we took Friday off... we overslept for a few hours and it was just easier to take the day off entirely instead of trying to make up for the lost time.

Also, Flutter's trying to work on finishing Metroid II for that NSO group topic. She only has 9 Metroids left, so she should be able to finish it before long.

Sorry, most of this delay is on me. You know how it is... you take one day off, then you need a second day to recover from the events of the first, then you're not feeling well and need another day, then something comes up and you lose another day...

Nothing too bad, mind you. Watching the first Turtles film in theaters, getting far too many snacks and sodas (it's been over six years since any of us went to a theater and I thought it would be nice to go all out as a once in a lifetime special treat), recovering from doing that, spending a day fighting with an old external hard drive to try to get something off of it. Things are going fairly well right now. Just a long sequence of delays.

I don't think anyone is expecting you to get through so many songs quickly, so no worries.

The first Turtles movie? You mean the one from 1990? I remember loving that as a kid.

Sorry, again, this is largely my fault. I forgot to charge the tablet to do anything on Saturday, we went to see K-Pop Demon Hunters in the theater on Sunday, had to spend Monday recovering from all the soda we had on Sunday... I've also been spending a lot of time playing games instead of pushing to make progress like I should have. Currently working on F-Zero GP Legend (almost done with 7 of the 8 story modes and up to Class B on Zero Test--albeit, only with bronze for everything as gold seems virtually impossible, haven't started the Grand Prix mode yet).

...Still, we managed to get back to work today, which is some progress.

Our theater was fairly quiet. Just one family with a lot of kids... slightly uncomfortable with how often our chair was kicked, but you can't go to an animated musical without expecting such things & learning to better tolerate getting hit by small children is likely beneficial for me anyway. (Also hearing a little girl sing along to What It Sounds Like was adorable.)

Cute film, it was fun.

I keep having people tell me I need to watch that. Guess they probably can't all be wrong.

If so, I have a question: There was a recent Street Fighter ranking that included alternate variants of several characters (Evil Ryu, Violent Ken). If there were a KoF Ranking, what variants would you say are relevant enough to include?

...My list of characters that I took from TV Tropes doesn't list alternates and I have minimal experience with the franchise.

Orochi Iori and Leona are basically just faster versions of the base characters. Orochi Yashiro, Chris and Shermie have the same normal moves as their base versions but completely different specials and supers. They are definitely different enough to count as different characters. You could make a case for Rugal, Omega Rugal and God Rugal being different characters. I think God Rugal is only in Capcom vs SNK 2 though.

Ooh, thank you for that! I think I'll add all of them to my massive list of "fighting game characters" that I'll (probably) do something with after the music ranking.

Chris/Shermie/Yashiro are obvious inclusions, as you mentioned ; Omega Rugal deserves some respect ; God Rugal actually was part of my master list, as I'm familiar enough with all of the CVS and SVC titles (and yes, I would count the CVS 2 version of Shin Akuma that absorbs Rugal's powers to be different than regular Shin Akuma for list purposes).

I think Orochi Iori is the same as Riot of the Blood Iori? That's a famous enough term that I know it even without knowing much of the game, so I feel that needs to be in.

And I'd say Leona/Orochi Leona pairs nicely with Street Fighter EX's Hokuto/Bloody Hokuto, who were both part of the SF list. "Very similar to the base character ~evil~ form that comes about due to confusing blood related plot reasons & which later becomes a transformation for the base character"... *insert Doofenshmirtz "I'd have two nickels meme" here*

I've wanted to do a ludicrously massive fighting game character ranking since around 2010 & doing write-ups for over a hundred Street Fighters has motivated me to... at least work on deciding what characters I need to have on the list. I'm too distracted and anxious to focus on music, but just building and organizing a list is some easy busywork that I can handle. The way I figure it thus far...

MUST INCLUDE

Everyone from King of Fighters (including characters from games/series that are officially part of the universe [Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown], even if they haven't appeared in the main KoF series yet... like the entire cast of 3 Count Bout. Yes, this is why 3CB was on my mind lately. [EDIT: Probably won't include Cristiano Ronaldo for reasons. DJ Salvatore seems fine enough.])

Everyone from Street Fighter (including non-canon characters from EX, Movie, 2010, and Animated; as well as all shared universe characters like Slam Masters and Rival Schools, along with important Final Fight characters that haven't appeared in the main series yet. ...There is a non-zero chance that I expand to include everyone that was given a Shadaloo Bio on the SFV site which includes even the generic enemies from all Final Fight games & a robot from the American cartoon series. I'm at least including said robot because, hey, if a crazy cartoon robot counts as a Street Fighter to Capcom then hell yeah, I'm gonna talk about that robot. I'm... less sold on the relevance of every NPC and background enemy, but I'm still tempted.)

Everyone from Soul Edge/Blade/Callibur (including guests)

Everyone from Mortal Kombat (...though I may skip the guest characters from MK1 as I know nothing about Invincible, Peacemaker or The Boys & don't particularly wish to research them. Everyone from Guilty Gear and BlazBlue (I know they're different series, but including Arc System Works' two best series side-by-side looks right to me)

...And then I include as many other fighting game and fighting game adjacent characters as amuses me. Obscure fighting games are a bit of a passion for me, so there are a lot of games that I want to talk about; some quasi-mainstream (ClayFighter), some rather obscure (Windy X Windam), some that are going to infuriate purists (Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl), some that are both obscure and will infuriate purists (DreamMix TV World Fighters), and even some that definitely shouldn't count but I'm including them anyway (one or two M.U.G.E.N. fangames). My personal dream list and if I want to define "fighting game character" as "anyone who fights opponents in a video game (including fanmade games) focused on physical conflict -or- officially exists in the same universe as those who do" than I shall be doing so.

I'll probably post a list as soon as I'm done compiling one. I've got a lot so far, but there's still a bunch more I'm adding during my last few days off here.

I used to really be into fighting games. Unfortunately I've gotten too old and the games have gotten too complicated for me to play them any more. I still try to keep up with the fighting game scene though.

If you'll forgive BlogFAQs for a moment, we were supposed to meet with Rae, Luce, and Vin's sorta-adopted-father-figure person this evening. We've been riddled with anxiety all week leading up to it... and he didn't show up. Didn't cancel, didn't send an e-mail, he just... isn't here. I waited an hour and twenty minutes, I think I can just say he isn't coming.

...So now I have to worry and wonder if something happened to him or what because this meeting was entirely his idea. He's a good guy, he wouldn't intentionally ditch us. Right? I mean, people don't go out of their way to set a date to meet with their estranged kinda-sorta-daughter and ditch her without any word, right?

*sighs* So, all we can do now is wait and see if he ever reaches out to explain why he couldn't make it tonight. Hopefully he's alright.

I'm really sorry to hear this. You ought to be able to rely on a father, even if not official. Hopefully he is ok and does the right thing to fix this.

That sounds really tough but I think giving the benefit of the doubt is all you can do until you get an explanation or lack thereof. It's hard, no doubt, but it's better than letting disappointment overwhelm you and then learn that something justifiable happened. Should that be the case you might feel guilty for assuming the worst which I've often found is just as noxious because it can inadvertently make things feel like a 'you' problem instead of a 'him' problem. Hope you get the explanation and answers from him you deserve.

Honestly, I'm more worried about him than anything else. Reconnecting was his idea, so if he changed his mind for any reason, that would just be returning things to the status quo. We can live with that. It's the concern that there may be a health issue that prevented him from officially cancelling things that is troubling. ...But there are plenty of non-health related reasons that he might have failed to show up, so we'll just work on the assumption that he's fine for the time being.

Seriously though, knowing that people are still paying attention to this even with the lack of updates and are so quick to offer emotional support really means a lot. Thank you again.

Okay, hopefully resuming work on the music topic tomorrow. Just one last, overly long rambling post about fighting games as I finish some prep work for something that may or may not happen next year.

(TL;DR: I've got 1,127 characters that I'd consider to be must includes, divided into the "Primary" and "Secondary" lists. There's then a bunch of other lists of characters that I'd *like* to talk about, but will probably have to cut back on because ranking over 2,000 characters is... excessive.

335 characters, mostly from games that stretch the definition of fighting game. Cancelled games, fan games, party fighters, unlicensed games, M.U.G.E.N.... expect a lot of "that isn't a fighting game" and "there is no way you can possibly count that person as a fighting game character" with this list that almost seems curated to enrage any fighting game purist that looks upon it.

...Still, these games wouldn't be here if I didn't want to talk about them, so expect at least a few characters from every series on the following list:

I know I'm missing some... I need to add Megaman.EXE from "Onimusha Blade Warriors" (if not everyone from that game) & "Psychic Force" has to have some representation... the X fighting game is a licensed spinoff of Psychic Force, so how can I not have anyone from the main series? I just kept forgetting about them and don't want to redo all the numbers by adding more series right now.

Sooo... if anyone's truly bored or as obsessed with the topic as I am: Do you see any titles in the tertiary or lower lists that you'd be particularly happy to see included? Or any games not on the list that you'd enjoy seeing added? Or just characters from games in the "random/extra" pile that you want--I don't know anything about Umineko, but hey, I'll cover more characters from the title if that amuses someone.

(Of course, the vast majority of work on this won't start until after the music ranking. So even if it happens, don't expect the ranking for a full year or more. So, maybe, don't get your hopes up too high and accept that we're only speaking in the broadest hypotheticals. </.<)

the only series i would consider a serious omission is Under Night. it's relatively bigger compared to the other niche games. and it has Akatsuki and Eltnum as guest characters. particular shoutouts to Hilda, Merkava, Byakuya, and Gordeau.

in that same vein, they were part of the big 4 series in BlazBlu Cross Tag Battle which also has RWBY characters and some randoms like Heart from Arcana Heart and Yumi from Senran Kagura. Also the Blitztank.

Blade Strangers is a crossover game as well that includes Isaac from Binding of Isaac and Shovel Knight + more if that interests you at all.

Granblue Fantasy Versus is one of the bigger games atm. though it is not originally a FG IP.

i would also want to shoutout Aquapazza. only for the character Manaka who fights with a stack of books.

Divekick as a parody but also fundamentally solid FG. particulary Dive/Kick/Dr. Shoals/Redacted. personally the rest of the cast got to be a little too much for me but those four are particularly notable.

i don't think any of the following are particularly necessary but i didn't see them mentioned (also could have just missed them) so might as well drop them a mention to check out just in case: Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm, Vanguard Princess, Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax, Nitroplus Blasterz.

and stepping out of traditional fighting game realm for a bit, Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee (what it sounds like) and Def Jam: Fight For New York (featuring rappers some of whom that i'm positive you would have at least encountered through your other music topics).

i did also skim through some of the character list and would note that specifically for Persona 4 Arena, if those characters were going to be included, Shadow Labrys is a must-include as a separate entry. Completely different playstyle as well as competitive history (regular Labrys is pretty unremarkable competitively). As for the Shadow variants in Arena Ultimax, Shadow Chie and Shadow Naoto at least deserve mention imo for having funniest/cheapest/infamous touch of death combos.

also 2KXO the LOL fighting game which will at least be in beta by the time this list ever happens
