I'd say Hades is the best one.

But I have to give a special mention to Gunfire Reborn. I was looking for a new looter shooter that wasn't Borderlands, and that was one of the recommendations. Ended up really liking the Roguelite elements and started trying more games in the genre because of that.

Also, I've learned that I prefer roguelites, not roguelikes. If it doesn't have any persistent progression, then I end up not liking it.

Final Fantasy XIV's deep dungeons palace of the dead, heaven on high and eureka orthos. Definitely my favorite parts of xiv and incredibly fun roguelikes within what is otherwise an mmo.

They're made to be done as a party of four but they allow you to go in solo and there are achievements for doing it solo. Incredibly difficult to do solo because it doesnt scale and each xiv job has a very different solo experience in them.

Is Hades 2 looking to be the better game over the first? I havent kept up at all with how people think of the game so far.

I have purposely not seen any gameplay and will not get the game until its fully released from early access, but Im pretty excited to play it once it actually comes out since I loved the first one so much. Im just not a fan of playing incomplete/early access games.

Absolutely, disregarding how even now in its incomplete state the game already has double the content of the original, the refinements made to the gameplay are absolutely stellar.

Oh man... That game has some of the best gameplay ideas ever. I especially love the way that game does religion. I REALLY wish other games would copy the way they do religion. It also integrates stealth surprisingly well (honestly it's one of the only turn-based games I've played where stealth feels like a viable option). And playing an Orc Shaman then creating my own cult of orcs to follow me around the dungeon was so much fun.

I eventually bounced off the game because while it has amazing potential, I felt it needed to be more polished and there was still a lot of room for improvement in terms of making all the elements work. Also the dungeon itself didn't have all that much personality. It also would be nice if the quest were a little more interesting than "go down, grab magical object, go back up again."

Has it changed in the last 10 years? Last time I checked, it seemed like the dev team had stopped working on it.

Also someone tell me about Nethack please
Steam summary says the original has been under development for 3 decades...

Nethack is an ancient roguelike that is indeed still under development (the dev team are currently working on version 3.7.0). Graphics, like Rogue, are ASCII. As is standard for roguelikes, the dungeon is randomly generated and death is permanent.

I believe the chief thing that appeals to me about Nethack is that it encourages and rewards mastery of trivia. Knowing which monsters can confer poison resistance when eaten without being poisonous to eat, or how to safely discern whether the "gray stone" you found is useful or troublesome, or which items, when cursed, become differently useful rather than useless, are all of significant value when playing Nethack. (And while some devotees may assert that the game is best experienced blind, if you are an adult without infinite time on your hands, you should feel no shame about consulting the wiki.)

It is also a game where the developers will include code such that if you eat a scroll with the randomized label "YUM YUM", the default scroll-eating message ("It tastes papery", IIRC) is replaced by "Yum". Note that you have to polymorph into a gelatinous cube in order to eat scrolls, and gain no particular benefit from doing so even then. Many of Nethack's little details are just there to be fun. If they are useful, that is a bonus.

However, I will say that there is a chief drawback, and it is tedium. Nethack's early game is exciting; dangerous, but exciting. (Except when the path forward is hidden behind a secret door, so you have to spam the search button until the game allows you to continue playing. That is just annoying. I understand version 3.7.0 intends to address it.) In the midgame, as you identify your accumulated loot and grow in power, many monsters will cease to be notable threats, but you'll still need good tactics for the exceptions. But in the lategame, most dungeon floors are randomly generated mazes with no interesting features, and the greatest threat to your character becomes your own carelessness. Things certainly do pick up again in the endgame, mind you...

Nethack is challenging, and will require a substantial time investment - my first win took me over 50 attempts (probably closer to 75, but I didn't keep an exact count), and that was with liberal use of the wiki. It is not a game for everyone. It is, however, most certainly a game for me.

It still gets updates (its most recent one is from this month, in fact), the updates are just super inconsistent. And I would say it has changed, but not in a way that necessarily matters to you. There wasn't ever a story added (that I'm aware of, I haven't played in a long time either) as that's not really something that is particularly common in Roguelikes, and most of the changes aren't things that added sweeping core systems.

And ye, the game has so many different goofy ways to go about things. It really is king of the hill when it comes to the genre.
