my only complaints are that even with aggressive autosaves it could benefit from a "retry fight" button, and some way to change weapon mid-battle if it's going to have enemies (and bosses, even) that heal off particular damage types

10/10 otherwise

I would give it an 8/10

Expert mode was too easy
Enemies take too long to wind up their attacks, even on attacks that claim to be "swift"
There are a lot of weapons but very few are any good. Getting new ones is usually a disappointment
Maelle should have been the leader of Act 2 is my biggest complaint. I don't really like Verso

Just finished it over the weekend, 9/10 did a lot I've been wanting out of final fantasy for a decade. Just lacks the scale that it needs to get a 10/10.

I feel like people were praising Metaphor quite a bit back when it first came out as being a step-up from the Persona series. Nowadays it seems like the general consensus is that it's a very good game (like 8/10 or a little above) but not really in the same league as Persona 5.

Amazing, top-tier rpg, through and through. The story is one of the best stories ever. The pacing and narrative just keeps on giving. The gameplay is probably the best for an rpg since persona. However, the parrying system can get pretty hard and unforgiving at times, I wish they toned it down.

I haven't finished the story yet (started act iii), but it's something I'm probably going to put on the lists of greatest rpgs ever (along with Witcher 3, Final Fantasy 9, Persona 4, Baldur's gate 3).

Oh, and the minigames suck. They made it that way on purpose too :<

Too many design choices that, while good or even great for this game, I pray to GOD devs do not take them as necessities going forward.

We don't need turn-based RPGs becoming like ARPGs when devs thought a single trend was responsible for all of the game's successes.

I'm mixed on it after playing through and beating it.

It starts off strong but it kind of loses steam as you get to the end.

You can get by with just dodging. I only parry the gradient attacks which are much easier to parry than normal attacks.

This is my only issue as well. Sometimes you have to run back and skip a cutscene. Just lemme retry quick please.

Which is funny cause I got way more into Metaphor than I ever have with Persona. The change of tone and world alone enticed me far more than Persona. In typical fashion though, I hit a boss that I seemingly can't beat with no time limit left and I've given up.

I just beat Clair Obscur and I didn't really care for the ending. I think the big problem was we really never learned much about the real world. Kind hard to really care about what happens there. There isn't much explanation on what the real world is about like the war between the Painters and Writers that doesn't really seem relevant at all since its just casually mentioned and a plot device for the real Verso to die. All we really know about the real world is that the Desandre Family is really dysfunctional and toxic. I feel like they added Maelle torturing Verso in her ending just to make it more ambiguous.

I like how in the Verso ending it makes it seem like its the real France until you look at the grave of the real Verso and it states he died on Decemeber 33rd, a date that does not exist in real life.

Metaphor is a 8/10, still has a lot of JRPG bullshit that I dislike in the genre.

9.5/10 so far for Expedition 33. It manages to avoid many things I dislike in JRPG's (especially certain tropes) while feeling grounded even though the setting is far from grounded. From great dialogue and deliveries, allowing slow moments to let us (the audience) sink in to the events that happen, excellent OST, beautiful graphics, to great story beats, and the funny moments (being rare) but when it happens it's actually pretty damn hilarious and feels earned, etc.

My only complaint is when you get painted power picto which honestly feels too OP. I don't think the game was ready to handle characters doing millions of damage. I liked Act 1 & 2 because if felt like I was on the edge of my seat in a lot of these fights (and it did help that I didn't grind), but when I got that specific picto I was one-shotting enemies and bosses like nothing. Most of the challenge in the first 2 acts just felt gone that I had to purposedly make my characters weaker just to get the "thrill" again. It's honestly a nitpick though, I tend to do this to games that I enjoy soo much.

she joins the expedition at 16, the same age as when she came into the painting to stop her parents, before becoming reborn as maelle

everyone in expedition 33 are 32 years old.

alicia turned 16 twice, once as her, once as maelle, which means she has lived for 32 years, which means she did, in fact, join the correct expedition

It's not just something they drop on you at the end. You can find hints of it throughout the game, you just don't understand what they mean at the time.

Metaphor had a crazy amount of praise for its allegories criticizing fascism (mainly from Jason Schreier), and I wondered if they were playing the same game because the themes and dialogue just felt like every other JRPG to me.
