Rules

1. You may vote up to 4 entries that fit the prompt.
2. No alts.
3. No deleting or editing posts; though, editing posts shortly after you post is fine.
4. If you change your vote, clearly indicate that you are changing a previous vote. Same for adding or subtracting picks.
5. In general, if there are two picks that can be considered the same product (i.e. Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle), I will combine them.
6. If a vote is vague, I will pick the first available choice that best matches the vote (i.e. "Mario" for Wii Games becomes Super Mario Galaxy).
7. I will post the parameters of each Rushmore topic. Other than that, feel free to vote however you like and based on any criteria that best fits the "Mount Rushmore" of that topic.
8. If a vote doesn't fit the topic, it will count as a blank vote.
9. You may nominate as much as you want and have an unlimited amount of seconds for established nominations.
10. Every Sunday, I'll post the schedule for next week. I will pick based on the number of nominations. Any ties will be determined by RNG.

I'm assuming all the Kratos votes were for Kratos from God of War!

Most of the discourse was around Bowser and if he really is the most appropriate choice for a dad or not. I'm on the "Nintendo doesn't typically touch fatherhood and they need a rep so they chose Bowser" side, but hey, they've been making a lot of those parental videos lately and they are well-made.

Last 5 Rushmores

Fictional Evil Ensembles: Team Rocket / Legion of Doom / Brotherhood of Mutants / FOXHOUND
Emo Songs: My Chemical Romance - Welcome to the Black Parade / Panic! At The Disco - I Write Sins Not Tragedies / Linkin Park - Crawling / Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
Superheroes (Non-Marvel, Non-DC): Spawn / Invincible / Hellboy / Sailor Moon
Ice Cream Flavors: Vanilla / Chocolate / Strawberry / Mint Chocolate Chip
Video Game Dads: Kratos / Barret Wallace / Joel Miller / Bowser

This Week's Rushmores

Tuesday: 3rd-Generation Video Games
Wednesday: 4th-Generation Video Games
Thursday: 5th-Generation Video Games
Friday: 6th-Generation Video Games
Saturday: 7th-Generation Video Games
Sunday: 8th-Generation Video Games

Next Themed Week: July 7 - July 13 (Songs of the Decade)

Today's Parameters

You must pick video games from the 2nd generation of video games.

This period of time is typically defined from games released on consoles that came out between these years: 1976 to 1984.

Ports are fine, but they should be based on consoles of the respective generation.

Games released outside the timeframe are fine, as long as they're on the console of the respective generation.

i dont know when Tetriss date is btw, the official date is 85 but there are sources saying its 84? I feel like if you are using the Russian time its probably more akin to third generation but it grew widespread with the game boy which is fourth gen

craziest thing is it probably isnt going to be the only game which is gonna be screwy to figure out which gen it belongs to

It seems that generations are largely based on the console release date than the video game release date.

Also Im fine with a game belonging to multiple generations

The Famicom came out in 1983 but is still gen 3. Same boat as Tetris.

Honestly, it'd probably be better for the topic post to just say which consoles are eligible rather than giving a span of years, though I suppose arcade and PC stuff makes that a bit tricky.

Aren't generations defined by consoles (and perhaps computers)? Not really arcade games. Sure it'd be okay to nominate Pac-Man in that situation, if you want a rushmore of games that contributed to the crash that is.

Space Invaders (contemporary ports in general were a success)
Adventure
Pitfall
Zork (Cause Colossal Cave Adventure is more of a 1st gen game)

Early consoles were defined in part through their ability to replicate arcade machines. The most successful games on the 2600 were arcade ports

Pac-Man is the best selling Atari 2600 game. A game doesn't have to be good to be successful.

ET also sold crazy good. I don't think anybody nominating Pac-Man is thinking of the 2600 version.

The reason Pac-Man was so successful on 2600 was because it was a massively successful arcade game though.

My point is that viewing a generation only by console games doesn't really make sense, particularly in this generation, as so much of why home consoles saw success was because of Arcade ports.

That consoles weren't powerful or optimized well enough to replicate arcade machines without cutting major corners feels more like an argument for looking beyond consoles tbh

I kinda get where lordjers is coming from, if its strictly consoles then PACs got a lot less of a case (Space Invaders and Donkey Kong still do considering they carried Atari and Colecovision respectively)

that said we have put infamous stuff on the Rushmore before. Although I think at the time it wasnt viewed as such.

has it been common to separate the two? I suppose it only really matters in this one instance since SF2/MK2 votes wont matter when we get to that gen

SF2 was a huge hit on the SNES, comercially and critically, so it would actually make sense to consider it in that gen.

Sticking only to console games actually is a neat thought exercise. NOT A VOTE but I'd go with...

Adventure
Combat
Pitfall!
Major League Baseball

Computer games would be another interesting one, so I may think on that, but again, arcades are definitely part of the generation
