Good for him. I cheated my way through my zoom class this semester too and graduated. I used to use Chegg and homeworkify to cheat but homeworkify got shut down. And I discovered ChatGPT which was way better than homeworkify. Since you can also use it for personal questions.

His degree, like yours, should be revoked, and you both ought be retroactively expelled.

And? You're still unworthy of that degree. You're not even worthy of pity.

That you are fundamentally incapable of reasoning and that you rely on Chat GPT just to write your responses on a message board only shows that you have damaged your own cognitive and reasoning functions and it's going to prove a huge problem for you

You are a plagiarist. Nobody should pity you

No, sorry, I disagree. Earning a degree is meant to qualify you for a field. Emphasis on "earning." Plagiarizing your way to it, which is what AI is with the opposite of extra steps, makes you unworthy to it.

College and grad school would have been a lot more pleasant if I had ChatGPT and other AIs.

Never once has crossed my mind to use them for cheating. For inspiration and cramming? Absolutely. I would have been a much better student if I had tools that could simply walk me through the material endlessly and explain every step.

Colleges do investigate and revoke.

Im probably one of the most recently graduated from college, got out like a year before ChatGPT became mainstream to the point of assisting with work

Im just gonna say I never used it, lots of my underclassmen did, and its pretty common now from what Ive seen

The issue as I see it is whether or not the tool is sanctioned and widely available to the students in the course. If the use of the tool is unsanctioned, and against the course policies, it provides an advantage to those using it versus those that did not. This is entirely different than the alternative where its use is permitted and students can freely choose to use it as they fit.

tl;dr

It is straight up cheating in the former case. This is a significant offense within academia and harms not just the cheater but those that did not. Depending on the severity, punishment is warranted from a zero to expulsion or degree revocation.

I'm not here to debate the merits of the AI use in college, but it is certainly cheating if its usage was not permitted.

Most people are unworthy of their degrees if doing something underhanded at any point makes it so.

I think most have done something that wasnt always straight and narrow, even if thats just finding worksheets online.

Im not defending the guy if he gets punished, I just dont particularly care if he doesnt. A degrees a degree to me in most cases

ChatGPT is worse than that, and we know why. Even in the case of "find a study guide/worksheet online," setting aside one is still cheating, there is still "match the right answer to the question." Chat GPT is plagiarism, one of the cardinal sins in academia.

Plagiarism is pretty common even without ChatGPT. Wasnt there an esteemed professor who was caught plagiarizing a few years ago? Its just an unfortunate reality.

I dont disagree that ChatGPT makes it easier, but I just dont view college degrees are an honorable thing at this point. Theyre basically a ticket to a decent life in the modern day.

Only used for my entire Calculus class. And for the essays in another class. ChatGPT wasnt around my entire college career. There was a cut off where college students existed before ChatGPT and after. Im someone that exists in both worlds started before took a break and when I came back ChatGPT was around.

Like I said in OP students used Chegg and other methods to cheat before ChatGPT. Such as sharing answers on a test. Zoom era classes. You could open a new tab and just google the answers or even have the test be open book. I would say being in both worlds ChatGPT made cheating the easiest.

There is this program called Safe Assign where you submit your essays to that scan for plagarism. I was worried this might be the time I get caught. Submited my ChatGPT essay and it only had a 5% score on SafeAssign. Ended up getting an 85 on that essay. No idea where ChatGPT gets it from but somehow outsmarted SafeAssign when I did my essay.

ChatGPT didn't "outsmart" anything. A random string of words isn't going to set off a plagiarism detector either. The fact that you don't understand how this works only makes your attitude even more alarming.

Yeah a lot of people gave up on certain majors at my school due to not being able to pass calculus. Or not being good at math in general. Im guessing it the righteous crowd popping in to go against the person that said they cheated.

I was in study groups during zoom/covid era classes and saw other cheating in other ways. I imagine this took place at other levels too. I am not the only one. Just the only one in thread who said they did. I think the major breakthrough at my college was they banned professors from having you turn your cameras on. Because they felt many students at my college come from poor families and may not want their homes filmed. Which made the cheating easier.

As a kinesiology major in grad school I never really found I could use ChatGPT to cheat on most of my assignments, but if we got assigned a bunch of research papers to go through I would use ChatGPT to summarize the articles and pull out the relevant information for my assignment

I found learning to read through research articles was import in undergrad the first few times you do it to understand how a article is written/organized but after a while unless youre using them as citations for your own research you just start skimming them for relevant information anyways. ChatGPT just helped me to exponentially speed up that process
