I had a bootleg VHS that also included Heavy Metal for some reason.

I thought it looked cool, wasn't old enough to follow it. Sure as hell wasn't old enough for Heavy Metal.

It's enjoyable. Apparently Beatty still has the film rights to the character, which is why we've never seen a new film because nobody wants a Dick Tracy movie with a 90 year old Tracy.

I do agree that it should have had a sequel. It's insane that it didn't

I rewatched it a few years back after being obsessed with it as a kid. What really struck me was just how dry the movie was overall. To draw comparisons to the other prominent cartoon / comic noir crime flick of that era, Who Framed Roger Rabbit came out two years earlier and was just oozing with humor and charm from top to bottom; meanwhile, Dick Tracy has a couple of gags, Al Pacino hammed it up a bit, and plenty of the characters certainly looked funny, but overall it played things just a little too straight and seriously, which really clashed with the over-the-top visuals and deliberately cartoonish character designs.

Put that property in the hands of someone like James Gunn nowadays and it'd be a smash hit, but apparently Warren Beatty is sitting on the rights until he dies, so...*shrugs*

I feel like that's pretty accurate with the source material. Funny designs and a few goofs and gags here and there, but at its core was a fairly hardboiled good guy vs bad guy cop action strip with some charm.

At the time, Mad Magazine was still common and reprinting their old Dick Tracey satires, so the old comics had not completely disappeared from the gestalt.

That was when movie marketing seemed to be done proper. Happy Meal toys, commercials, radio ads, billboards, more toys, cartoons, etc.

Maybe its still the same but Im no longer the target demographic?

Great movie IMO. Al Pacino was terrific. And Dustin Hoffman as Mumbles, oh man.

Fun Fact: Tons of people wanted another crack at Dick Tracy, but Warren Beatty kept hold of the rights and snuck around the rules so he didn't have to do anything with them.

I had a similar experience except it was just last week that I watched it. It was amazing to me how much this movie paralleled 1989 Batman, right down to the Danny Elfman music, even though I lived it when I was a kid. Watching it through that lens was really interesting.
