No. Lots of neat visual design and legitimately groundbreaking tech all for a boring, lifeless story.

I remember liking it as a kid, but its pretty meh looking back at it.

Still not as bad as people pretend it was, like a 5-6/10 movie at worst. Think the problem was that Final Fantasy the game can tell a boring story for long enough that it turns around into really good by the time you finish, and you have added incentive to continue playing as long as its interesting enough because you're literally playing the game to get to that point. In a movie neither of these things are true, so if the first hour of this ~2 hour movie is boring as ****, nobody is gonna care if it gets interesting later.

It's not the kind of bad that's fun to talk about / make fun of. It's mostly just dull and uninteresting.

This. Also why did Sakaguchi went full on western sci fi? Imagine a dragon quest movie and its turned into start trek. Also they seriously overstated how mainstream FF was. And it also released during the same week of Fast and the furious.

Square USA had their offices in Hawaii and thats where the movie was made. Also, Final Fantasy IX was also developed there. They ultimately shuttered that branch and liquidated everything like servers and office equipment.

Somewhere down the line, the company I previously worked for ended up with one of their office chairs and it had a Square USA inventory control sticker on it.

If it wasn't called Final Fantasy, it would not have made people mad.

It is a fun, interesting, cool movie. It's no masterpiece or anything like that, but it would have been better received if it didn't have the Final Fantasy expectation behind it.

I was suuuuuuper young when I saw it, so I don't really remember it. I vaguely remember just being confused by it.

One weird thing I do remember is a scene where they're trying to convince gruff military guy that they're killing the planet with whatever they're doing and he dismisses the idea of the planet being a living being by shooting a hole in the ground and asking if he'd just killed the planet.

And the dumb thing is that I think my brain made this a core memory because people constantly complained about the Sword of Sargeras in WoW, wondering why Blizzard just stopped addressing an enormous sword being stabbed into the planet. And I always thought this was an incredibly stupid complaint because you had a whole big questline where you drained the sword of its corrosive magic and then another whole expansion where you healed the wounds it caused.

But people apparently couldn't get past the planet being stabbed even though it's literally just a big hole in the ground.

I enjoyed it. I ended up buying the DVD at some point. Havent revisited though. The history of the aftermath is what led to FF12 being such struggle to make. You had team Sakaguchi and not team Sakaguchi. NTS was in charge at the time and with Matsuno being Team Sakaguchi he was treated badly the broke down then he left SE. TSI was the domino.

I've seen it three times (once in theaters, and the other two times with fans insisting I need to see it again). I know some people insist that it's secretly good because X, Y, and Z. But I just can't get it. I don't like the story or the characters. The visuals are nice and still look good, but that's not enough to make a good movie.

What a crazy era of Japanese companies just buying and taking up space in the "top" American places. I knew about NY and LA but never knew this about Hawaii. But it's SO overspending, tech-flexing, bubble-remenant Japan. I know dudes who would have been SO impressed by with the fact that SE had offices in Hawai'i.

So I decided to watch the movie...

It barely is coherent at all and is much worse than I remember. I don't like this movie.

It throws out terms like Gaia left and right...and the protagonist wants to collect eight spirits to deal with all the alien ghost spirits...somehow (never really explained why this would help). Meanwhile some guy wants to use a giant space gun to blast them into smithereens...which honestly makes a lot more sense, but of course the protagonist talking about mysticism nonsense has to be right, with the space gun somehow making the alien ghost spirits stronger for some reason, and the eight spirits nonsense turns out to be the correct course of action.

The movie is more Sci-Fi than anything else. It doesn't feel like Final Fantasy at all.

Also annoyed in Life I'd Strange that Max is made to be a fan of it.
