why did we need another Superman

Because after having the half-assed DCEU that was not supported at all, competing with the MCU, Warner Bros. and DC decided to actually do a reboot of a cinematic universe that they hope will compete.

James Gunn was given the head spot, and Gunn (and everyone) knows the central character to DC is Superman.

I've heard this sentiment echoed, but I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to go with someone new if only to have no prior content attached to their flash.

They might do it if only because it would be easy and a lot of fans would be into it, but surely there are downsides to using an iteration of a character that already has 9 seasons of content behind them. You'd either have to take all that history into account which might feel limiting, or you just ignore it and say "same actor, different Flash" which might piss off everyone who wanted him to reprise the role.

It definitely wouldn't, we only want his work to pay off (though I only watched 6ish seasons). The show has so many different timelines and variations of character anyway.

A lot of digesting.

Excellent Superman, fun movie, some great setpieces and ambitions, and a much better movie than Man of Steel. But also... I don't know. I'm still trying to parse why I'm... feeling lackluster about it.

I'll wait for a spoiler topic to try and sort out my feelings in-depth, but a definite recommend.

Spoilers should be fine here as long as they are marked. I saw it again today and I liked it just as well the second time, possibly even a little more since I already knew what the structure of the film was going to be.

But I also can more clearly explain the few areas that I felt left room for improvement. I don't go so far as to say "lackluster", but I had just a couple of cons that I wanted to talk about in more detail:

*This movie needed another "Clark Kent" scene. He was really only Clark Kent once in the entire film and it's the contrast between Clark and Supes that plays really well. To his credit Corenswet did a fantastic job as both characters, unlike Cavill who is a good Supes but an AWFUL Clark or Routh who was a very good Clark but never really had a chance to shine as Supes. The one scene he did have as Clark at the Daily Planet was really really good and his interactions with his co-workers were all solid. I'm not sure when they would have had time to squeeze in an extra Clark scene, but especially on the second watch I definitely noticed the lack of Clark screen time. Maybe they could have fit something in before he got imprisoned? But things kind of popped off after the monster fight so it could have been difficult to squeeze something in.

*I really disliked the way they portrayed Luthor's lackeys, specifically the way they showed them controlling Ultra Man's movements. I didn't really need them to give a detailed explanation of HOW they were controlling his actions (it would probably involve a handwave and something about "nanobots"), but seeing them grinning stupidly while leaning around swinging a joystick just really irked me. It's like when someone is playing video games on screen, but they don't really know how games work they just end up doing way too much movement and mashing in a completely unnatural way. It probably doesn't play as poorly to someone who doesn't play games, but there are a couple of brief shots of it that I just hate. Also they didn't really give any justification for why anyone in that room idolizes Lex to the point that they are whooping and hollering while participating in the attempted murder of Superman. I'd guess there ius supposed to be some parallel with modern day Elon worshiping Tech Bros, but a little something to justify his following would have been nice. Even if it was to establish at some point that Luthor Corp was a company with a track record of being incredibly beneficial to society? Like revolutionizing medicine and making it available to the masses? Or solving world hunger with science? Instead all we know for sure is they sold billions of dollars of munitions to a despot.

But other than that I really can't find much to fault. Despite having 3-4 other good guys it was still very much a Superman focused movie and it also didn't spend an hour ruining the pacing on an origin story. You get just enough at the very beginning (definitely don't miss the first 30 seconds of this movie, they establish a rough timeline) but then it's straight into the action.

All of the other reporters from the Daily Planet were done very well, especially Jimmy. They were useful enough without the movie becoming too much about them.

I think they picked good other heroes to include in the movie (#JusticeGang) and even though Mr. Terrific got the most time on screen, Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern is excellent and I love how much my wife hates his haircut. There was more romance in the movie than I would have assumed coming into it, but it didn't feel like it was shoehorned in or like it ran too long either. All in all I stand by my original reaction that it was a very strong showing for the new DCU.

Had a great time with it. All the characters felt well done; heroes that were fun and easy to connect with, and a villain that's portrayed in a way that he's just downright hateable with no redeeming qualities.

Also, had very little to no knowledge of Mr. Terrific before this. Really enjoyed him, definitely my surprise standout. His fight scene where he solos the camp has that James Gunn GotG-style flare with the music going in the background, one of my favorite sequences in the whole movie.

Hearing that Mr Terrific was done well is exciting.

Id recommend Strange Adventures as a good introduction to him, and its only 12 issues. Theres also Mr Terrific: Year One running at the moment, so you may have to wait a bit if you want it collected.

This Mr. Terrific puts Arrow's Terrific to utter shame, lol.

Movie overall was great. Even if it is the launchpad of a new DCU, it still works perfectly fine as a standalone film. The existence of other heroes didn't detract from it at all. There was no feeling at all that some of these guys were only in it so they can be spun-off.

I adored almost everything about this movie. A wonderful love letter to the central character, an amazing launching pad for both Guy Gardner and MIster Terrific, and a starmaking vehicle for Krypto, whose movie this actually was. Even the minor characters shone. The Jimmy subplot felt like a real Jimmy Olsen subplot, and Mrs. Maisel had such charm as Lois. Man, did I ever love this movie.

I like that the first act was different from the standard. As Gunn has said, nobody needs to be introduced to Superman. Even still, the first act of the film showed Superman with his dog, at his home and how he's powered by sunlight, the villain of the film and his team of powers, Superman's conflict with trying to do good in a world with social media and criticism, and his preference to choose life over killing when the Justice Gang shows up to help stop the kaiju.

It's a really effective first act. I think it does feel a little weird though, since it's not slower paced at all. The slowest moving scenes of any are the Lois and Clark scenes.

Yeah, I get that. My friend said the same thing. Certainly, even as an outsider to most comic book fare, Im still well aware of Superman. I respect the decision to sidestep Yet Another Origin Story. And his backstory is well established throughout the film. Its more of the pacing of the overall film, yeah.

I saw someone compare the way the movie starts to the beginning of Mobile Suit Gundam: Chars Counterattack. Having now seen Superman, I would argue that this is an exaggeration. But I get where theyre coming from!

I just saw the new Superman film. My level of appreciation for Superman is weird. I loved Superman 1 and 2 as a kid, got tired of him when I started getting into X-Men comics, and haven't really liked any film or printed takes on the character besides Morrison's All-Star Superman.

This was good, indisputably better than any Cavill or the Routh film. It's very comic booky. Someone needs to remind Marvel that this is how these movies are supposed to look. I appreciated how much of the film took place in the day time. There's a couple places where the CG takes over but it for the most part doesn't feel like a cartoon.

Nicholas Hoult is an amazing Luthor and I liked the characterization of Jimmy. I don't love the actors for Supes or Lois to be honest, but they're fine. No one's bad.

Gunn did a great job not making this feel like Guardians or Peacewalker, except for that one scene where Mr. Terrific pulls a Yondu. Maybe Gunn is just contractually obligated to do this in every movie he makes now. At least there weren't any needledrops.
