All of my employees keep telling me their rent is going up by hundreds of dollars and they need a raise

"Just move somewhere cheaper" is the same libertarian nonsense as "just get a better paying job". Well even if you can pull it off (it's not some trivial thing), there are still gonna be people around who have to bear the burden of expensive housing/shitty jobs. That and/or people flood the labor/housing markets so much that those jobs become less in-demand and the home prices raise until they aren't as affordable anymore. Almost like they're systemic issues or some shit! It might work out for you to do it, but we can't collectively kick the can down the road on labor and housing not being suitable for everyone and expect society to function

I think that's the guy who in some previous topic about city design said he didn't like to leave the house. People who do like to leave the house might have friends and acquaintances where they live that they don't want to leave behind. Or they just like having amenities and stuff to do, which becomes a lot worse in a rural shithole. Not saying Barstow is a shithole because I simply don't know anything about it, but a lot of the places where housing is truly cheap are. While I don't know that a lot of cities at this point are worth it, there's definitely an extent to which you get what you pay for with housing.

there is nothing wrong with raising minimum wages. I don't see why people get upset that minimum wages are going up as if the wages for skill labor won't go up as well. Even if you do find yourself in a position where a fast food employee fresh out of highschool is making more per hour than you, you most likely get better benefits, better work conditions, and better hours.

I find the cost of living to be very cheap, but I think thats mostly because of location.

These prices arent bad for a professional worker like TC (Im assuming) but the problem is those professional jobs are in bigger cities. Commuting from here would be hell and you most likely have to commute to work if you live here.

People complain about rising taxes and then vote for more programs, more taxes for a project, or some bozo that prioritizes people that dont work over those that work.

If you want your money to mean more, you have to vote to keep your money. The government takes enough already, they need to trim the fat and use the income theyre already getting.

I just bought a home in a city where the median house price is $1,496,985 AUD ($975,749.79 USD), would have moved further out but we have to be where the work is.

I still kinda consider myself a HENRY though (High Income Not Rich Yet) because if I lost my job it'd wouldn't be long until I had nothing. I'm not quite paycheque to paycheque but I still cringe at grocery and car bills.

Not American. I do okay, but that for years has been a matter of not much going out as opposed to a matter of much going in. Not having children puts me in a whole different picture from what feels like most people around me (but that may be an illusion).

The first thing I learned doing case management at my internship is that there, effectively speaking, no affordable housing, because the demand for it is so much greater than the supply every place has super long waitlists. My friend, who is on SSDI and has a daughter has been on a waitlist for Section 8 housing for like 10 years.

I can theoretically comfortably afford a studio apartment in my area when I graduate (masters in social work) if I make an average-ish starting wage.
My supervisor once asked me, "You know we don't make money, right? Okay, good, just checking."

it took 3 years to land current place to get a rent subsidized based on income.

though i'm still waiting on list for a rent controlled apartment on income (currently on year 2) trying to get a place in a few towns over to become closer to better shopping areas.

i was always nagging my uncle not to make too much as i worried about getting kicked out of here (at the time it is very hard to get a place that allowed dogs and with my dogs breed it's not easy).

Only thing that concerns me is homes that are massively overpriced. And it's entirely because of boomers keeping values artificially inflated from trading equity to other boomers like Pokemon cards

It's kind of a loaded phrase because I've seen people on the left and right use it. There also seems to be a lot of conflation with personal property vs. private property involved. In my opinion the abolition of private property is a left wing goal but what we're seeing with people owning less personal property is very capitalist (i.e. media content becoming available only on streaming or the whims of digital storefronts)
