Nintendo Switch 2 set a U.S. sales record in June, as it achieved the highest launch month unit sales for any video game hardware in history. Its also the fastest-selling platform in the country.

The new device sold 1.6 million units last month, according to the latest data from Circana. PlayStation 4 was previously the record holder at 1.1 million units sold. Nintendo Switch 2 was Junes best-selling video game hardware in both units and dollars.

Nintendo Switch 2 provided a boost the gaming market as a whole last month. Consumer spending in both hardware and accessories reached new all-time June records in the U.S. June hardware spending rose by 249 percent year-over-year to $978 million the previous high was $608 million in June 2008.

We previously heard that Nintendo Switch 2 sold 1.1 million units in the U.S. over less than a week. It was also reported that it was the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware in the United States.

I'm not remotely surprised. Of course the diehards will jump on it day 1, and Nintendo provided sufficient stock for all of them. I keep saying that the real test will be during the holiday season and into year 2 when the casual fans and the parents buying them for their kids will be the ones they're trying to sell to. That's when we'll really see if the $450 console and $80 games are going to put some potential buyers off or not.

I don't mind that it's not an OLED, actually. The main thing I'm missing from the Switch 1 is that Hulu didn't update their app to work on the 2, and I used to use it for watching stuff in bed or in the backyard, so I still keep my OLED around for that.

Video game related boycotts always result in sales records

It's not a difficult record to break, all you need to do is actually produce a bunch of consoles and you'll likely sell most of them. Console makers tend to severely under produce consoles at launch, I imagine to generate articles about how amazingly sold out it is and how difficult it is to get.

This is what I was thinking. But good on them for having a good supply available at launch. Kind of think that should be the standard, really.

I'm not even a hater. I'm a Nintendo fan who's owned just about every Nintendo console released in my lifetime and bought the vast majority of them within the launch window. I bought a Wii U at launch and still own it, for fuck's sake! No Nintendo "hater" would ever be caught dead with one of those.

The fact of the matter is that I really want a Switch 2 for myself eventually, but right now it's just not financially feasible for me to get one. That $450 price tag is a huge increase from any previous Nintendo console, and a lot of other people are probably thinking the same thing as me: "I want one, but at that price, I don't know if I can afford it any time soon." And then you have the parents who might be thinking of buying them for kids on Christmas. At $300 per kid, the Switch was an easier investment to make. But $450 is a much bigger investment, so many of those parents might end up only buying one system that their kids have to share, or might just pass on it entirely and just buy games for the previous Switch that their kids already own instead.

Of course, I have no idea how many of those will still end up buying the Switch 2 after thinking about it and how many will choose to hold off on it until the price drops (unlikely) or their financial situation improves. We'll have to wait and see. I could be completely wrong and it'll still sell like hotcakes through the holidays and well into year 2.

Oh 100%, the artificial scarcity of consoles is fucking infuriating at launches. I may have a bunch of issues with Nintendo and the Switch 2 but I'm not going to deny that they pulled off a smooth launch by actually meeting demand. Totally undercut the scalpers and that's nothing but a good thing.

Oh and Calwings, the Wii U rocks, I played it WAY more than I ever did my Wii. I got the Legend of Zelda one and I love it. I should hook it up again and plays some Twilight Princess HD again.

I know, the Wii U was a lot better than people gave it credit for. But it was a terrible financial flop, and any so-called "Nintendo hater" (which someone was incorrectly claiming I was) would see it as not worth owning because it was such a bad flop. That's why I brought it up.

Honestly, good on Nintendo. In the past, they tend to have a lot of problems of shortages and scalping and was finally able to figure their shit out. Give credit where credit is due.

I still have and play my original launch day switch, 8 years later. One of the reasons why I really want a Switch 2 is so I can transfer everything to that Switch 2, factory reset my Switch 1, and then start modding my Switch 1 without worrying about my system or Nintendo account being banned.

i wanna buy one but dont wanna spend $500 for fucking Mario Kart that they already messed up lol
by the time they have a game out, the Switch 2 pro will be announced

That's a pretty mid list. They're missing a really big game at the moment. I don't think metroid or pokemon legends is it, especially since you can play those on the switch 1.

Even though I don't like the game, breath of the wild was a much bigger deal than anything on that list. Mario odyssey as well. There isn't a game like that announced for the switch 2 yet. Metroid definitely isn't it.

Like one of the games there is a koei tecmo warriors thing. That's not really a big deal.

Odyssey is bigger than DK but it came out 8 months after launch and DK is still more than fine. Meanwhile S2 is looking to have a bigger variety of games which is more important in the long run. What's weird is that in Japan, Nintendo's been having lotteries for winning the chance to buy a Nintendo Switch 2, and it had requirements like having a Japanese account of a specific age, with a certain number of playtime on it.

That's actually funny hearing that because over here I can just walk into any store and buy one right now or order off any major retailer and have it delivered tomorrow.

I don't really know honestly. I got the PS5 not that far after launch but that was because it was a pretty big improvement over the PS4 technically and still the most advanced console on the market. So even if it didn't have many first party system sellers, even things like playing big third party games on the most advanced console was a selling point. With switch 2 there isn't anything like that. You'd be buying it for the games alone basically. Unless you were waiting over 5 years to play games on the switch for some reason.

If we're moving on from launch games you're missing the obvious selling point that the S2 is a portable that's able to play games at the power of systems when graphics diminishing returns have plateaued as seen by how many players have never moved on from PS4/Xbox One and still the cheapest console on the market. At a decently affordable price it's the best way to play games like Cyberpunk portably as confirmed by cd project themselves as well as having the best graphics for a mobile device according to nvidia. S2's selling point would be much better portable third party performance and support than S1 along with the traditional Nintendo exclusives. I can see you saying you don't care about portability but the average person do care about that more than needing the strongest graphics.
