Elizabeth: Far and away the best Velvet Room attendant. Marie isn't even worth talking about, and Margaret is fine, but Elizabeth is everyone's favorite for a reason. It makes sense that this nonhuman being of conceptual thought has only the vaguest idea of how humans actually operate (and it makes sense that Margaret, who's older, is better at interacting with humans), her style of awkward speech is cute, and she gets by far the most memorable Frankenstein female character name. I think by now they've used all of them? I also think that of everyone in P4AU, she has the best sprite work. Everything she does looks gorgeous, that is maybe the best sprite work of any video game of all time. I normally dislike this in fighting games, but I even like how her defeat animation makes it clear that she wasn't really beaten, is infinitely stronger than you can ever be, and is just screwing with you. I've never actually beaten any of the Velvet Room attendants in-game, by the way, but I've also never really tried that hard. Oh shit, I forgot to compare her to the others besides Margaret, well, I never really saw what Theodore was about, he's the only one who doesn't get into P4AU (shocking that it even acknowledged P3P), and I am not a fan of the twins. I could handle them if they were just normal little anime girls doing their thing, but it's the fact that they're ten and dressed like stripper cops that gets me, it's clearly juts a weird fetish thing at some point. Borderline Nowi behavior by Atlus, to be honest. God, can you believe Nowi was in a game from 2013? Completely insane. Lavenza is fine. Boring and serviceable, but worse than Elizabeth and Margaret, I think it's unfortunate that she ended up being the most important Velvet Room attendant because of Igor's VA's death meaning she takes over for P5S and P5T. Who's even the Velvet Room attendant in P5X? Merope, let's see... She looks fine, she--oh, she's the gacha mechanic, okay, you instantly lose a thousand points. Well, anyway, it's fun and cute how Elizabeth asks you to take her places and misinterprets everything, it's fun and cute how her dress looks like something an alien would make trying to imitate a human, it's fun and cute that she keeps trying to save the P3 protagonist after everyone else gives up, it's fun and cute how you can have sex with her despite being in a relationship with another girl wait no Elizabeth STOP NO

Rivers in the Desert: So good. I don't really know enough about music to describe exactly what I'm hearing, but it's like, I really like the booming voice of the singer, the building up to the epic feeling of this massive wacky adventure, the lyrics barely matter at all. That Persona music feels NOTHING like any other RPG's music is only to its benefit. To me, this is the best Persona song, sorry BABY BABY BABY fans. Oh, is this a link to the dancing game remix of the song? Okay, I'll listen to this... oh nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Also, what is even the plot of this game, that everyone goes to the Metaverse and has to dance?

Benjamin Franklin: Truly, this is among the deepest Persona lore. Well, he's on the 100 dollar bill, so he has that going for him, but more importantly, he was the relevant Founding Father most strongly against slavery, and even went so far as to eventually say "I watched some black kids at school once, and they were about as okay as the white kids, so I guess maybe they're not so bad," which by the standards of the time makes him a fucking saint. Also one of the last true Renaissance Men of history, before sciences branches out into specialties so finite that you can't do that anymore.
Kamoshida as a Villain: I mean, I already said everything, didn't I? But this is technically different than Kamoshida himself, so I guess I have to include it. It's great because he's ultimately just this petty asshole who's abusing his authority over literal children, yet he's presented as this completely unstoppable lunatic you have no hope against until you gain magic powers. This is also the palace that does BY FAR the most with "seeing how he views other people as their cognitive versions." You get to see how he views Ann as a purely sexual object (to be fair to him, though, nearly every single character in the game comments on her body at least once), you get to see how he abuses the male students, it's great. Compare this to Sae, who's probably the second best palace ruler, and she doesn't even have a cognitive version of her own sister. She even has one of Akechi! Poor Makoto.

Persona 5 Strikers Box Art: Very solid work. We've got the vibrant colors, we've got Joker, the party members, and the title off to the sides to establish that this is some kind of off-the-beat adventure and not just a standard "fantasy title goes in the center of the screen" thing, what actually IS in the center is Joker's gun, Arsene is there for some reason, and Ann is screaming and pushing her boobs out as far as she can, which is pretty much her lot in life. I appreciate how Ryuji, Haru, Futaba, and Yusuke are pushed into the back where you can barely see them, so it's just Joker, Morgana, and the waifus you can get a good look at. Is Makoto punching someone? I can't tell who she's punching, email me if you know the answer to that.

Adolf Hitler (Persona 2): You're lucky, because this is pretty much the only reference from the first three games (yes I know about the second part of Persona 2) that I actually know about. See, here's the thing. If you actually think about it, the characters that make up the collective unconsciousness of humanity are not going to be weird obscure Hindu gods. It's going to be Santa Claus, Homer Simpson, Batman, and Jesus. You get what I'm saying here? I obviously understand why Persona opts to use obscure deities instead of those (plus Alice, because Japan), but realistically, Bart Simpson occupies a larger space even in Japan's collective unconsciousness than Ara Mitama. So, the idea of just straight-up Hitler showing up makes 100% sense, because he truly is one of the few historical figures that definitely occupies that gigantic space in our collective unconsciousness. It makes 100%, complete sense, it's like the only time in all of Persona that one of the spirits' identities is commiserate with the level of power it possesses... but yeah, it's Hitler. I understand why the Western translation was like "okay we can't have literal Hitler," but what I don't understand is why their solution was to rename him "The Fuhrer" and give him extremely radical sunglasses. Like, it's so confusing. You could just replace his sprites with some other historical figure, it's not THAT difficult. "Oh no guys it's Genghis Khan or whatever," I don't know. Completely bizarre decision-making. By the way, no one is allowed to criticize me for ranking the real Benjamin Franklin, but not the real Adolf Hitler, and then complain that I gave them both high spots.

Sadayo Kawakami: I'm just going to say right off the bat that Kawakami > Becky. Kawakami is sort of the inevitable conclusion of Persona homeroom teachers. We started with the one who has a crush on you, but only admits it in the ending. We went onto the gross one who has a crush on you and is willing to fuck you in a tent if you don't tell anyone else. And now we've moved on to the just out-and-out romance with a woman in her late 20s. Like, Kawakami clearly deserves to be in jail for this. She's nowhere near as bad as Kamoshida, obviously, but bare minimum, she needs to get fired. She's just such a bad teacher, just the absolute worst. And I love it.
Funky Student: Completely bizarre concept. Why is there an afro disco student in a small town in 2008 Japan? That doesn't matter, he's just here to ask you some riddles that you'll google the answers to. I love how the games have 'I'm 1% above an extra' students just to fill out the school with wacky characters, like this guy in P4, and P5's stalker girl and reporter girl. I also like how the teachers are almost always wacky characters themselves, which is why the 'normal' teachers are always boring assholes.
Cosmic Tower Burger: This was the first burger challenge in P5 where I thought I personally could not defeat it in real life. I'm not even that into burgers! But if I didn't eat for a day, I'm confident I could crush the others with little effort. This one is the size of your torso, though, so it's finally a challenge. I enjoy how it requires all of your skills put together in order to take down, that's a cute idea, and I enjoy how you get bonuses for defeating these challenges... and it's also the most consistent way to raise your guts when you don't have anything better to do.

Afterschool Clubs: Conceptually, there's nothing wrong with these. But in actual practice, all of the s-links from the afterschool clubs in both P3 and P4 are bad. I'm not sure why? There's no inherent reason for that to be the case, and yet, does anyone remember Keisuke Hiraga? Does anyone care about Kou, Yumi, or Ayane? When the best afterschool club s-link is Daisuke, you've got a problem. Conceptually, it makes complete sense to have other miscellaneous students who are your friends besides your party members, and while it's true we do get Mishima (lol) and Kenji (lmao) (is there no equivalent in P4?), broadening that with more random students makes sense... and yet, they tend to suck. Even the ones who aren't in afterschool clubs, like Ai or the fat kid, also suck.

Kasumi and Sumire: I did say spoilers in the topic title. Here's the thing: this is a cool twist and everything, but it's a cool twist for the main character. It's not a cool twist for a secondary character, especially this secondary character. Like, seriously "Kasumi" shows up intermittently for the first 92% of the game and does nothing, and then she does almost nothing for the last 8% of the game. Like, she fully awakens to her persona and joins you and everything, but it's not particularly important. This twist isn't even like some huge twist that changes everything, because by the time you learn it, you already know Maruki is behind everything. It's just there to give a personal example of how Maruki "helps" people so you can wonder if he has a point, when you already get three main characters magically having their dead parents appear and Akechi's resurrection. And then on top of all of that, "Kasumi" is boring and annoying because of how prim and proper she is, and Sumire is just dour and unentertaining. And then on top of THAT, I think Sumire has the worst costume design of the entire Phantom Thieves? Her coat, gloves, and mask just look like female Joker almost exactly, to the point where it's like, if this had been the literal design for a feMC like P3P, no one would have blinked. And I get the point of this, it's her vision of a rebel, and her vision is just Joker because that's the only rebel she knows, it's fine, I get it... but we already have a character dressed like Joker, his name is Joker. Then she has a rapier because I guess they already used folding fans for Yukiko and nagitanas for feMC. Like, this is a character with three forms, and all of them are boring and bland and add nothing to the game. Like it's well known that each rerelease adds a new waifu (feMC, Marie, and Sumire), and although I dislike Marie, I might go so far as to say Sumire is worse. It's definitely close. Marie is probably more annoying because she shows up more and her dialogue and poems are more annoying, but at least she interacts with the story in a way that affects meaningfully affects things.
Tartarus: There are things that P3 does better than its sequels... but boy oh boy, the dungeons are not one of them. Tartarus is worse than Mementos, and Mementos is already bad. The IDEA of Tartarus is fine, the school turns into a giant mysterious tower that you have to ascend, but it took until P5 for Atlus to realize that no one likes randomly-generated dungeons that have nothing to interact with, and even then, it STILL has Mementos. Just completely insane. Like, there're no wacky bosses in Tartarus who trade barbs with you, there're no puzzles, there's no anything. At least P3R realized that the exhaustion mechanic sucks and removed it, at LEAST it has that. Sorry, but this is pretty much the worst major element of P3.

Burning Men's Soul: Like I said before, I'm not a jazz guy. I don't like this at all, the first part is okay, but then the lyrics start, and it just gets worse, and it wasn't that great to start with. "My rhyme is truly cooking," what is this, this has nothing to do with Persona, this is like 20% better than I could do, and I've been called tone deaf before. This is from... an anime? A sequel to P3? I had no idea this existed. This must be terrible if I've never heard of it, this sounds like the Persona version of that anime sequel to FF5 no one knows about.

Evokers: I already kind of covered this in my suicide to summon writeup. I do like the idea of needing a tool to activate your powers, but only by comparison to the other games. It lends SEES a 'not totally in control' feeling, whereas the Phantom Thieves feel fully in control and fully understanding of everything from the word go (though that's partly because Morgana is there to explain how everything works immediately, whereas Teddie shows up partway through). It makes SEES feel a little more ad hoc, which is ironic because they're the only ones who have the backing of a giant corporation that can even make these simulated suicide guns. It makes it feel like SEES is a bunch of normal people trying to enter the world of absolutely insane magic stuff where they don't actually belong, which is a cool concept, compared to the Phantom Thieves feeling completely inside their own element. I wonder if P4 characters not needing this was initially supposed to be the result of them getting their powers from Izanami instead of needing to awaken on their own? And it's sort of interesting that the evokers themselves are never relevant in the story; there's no sequence where a cop is like "why do you have a gun" or someone loses their evoker or whatever. These are here purely for flavor.

P3 Persona Awakening Cutscene: Very good cutscene, very solid introduction to the concept. It's funny that the main character is the only person who gets a persona awakening shown on-screen until The Answer just starts barreling through everyone's pasts to show them. Everyone else just shows up already knowing how to summon their persona, which is a weird direction for the game to take. And don't tell me they were all already persona-users before they met you, Ken and Koromaru just kind of show up.
Your Affection: I like this song. It's very... chill? Despite being energetic. P4 is definitely the chillest of the games, despite involving multiple deities trying to... I don't even remember what they were trying to do. Was Izanami supposed to be the ACTUAL deity, or just a shadow? Because Nyx was some kind of actual deity thing, whereas Yaldaboath was just an overgrown shadow. Anyway, very solid 'general doing things' song.

FeMC (P3P): There's something people should understand about this character. She exists purely because P3P was a complete downgrade from P3:FES, and they needed there to be SOMETHING to incentivize people who already played the main game to purchase this one. So, FeMC and her slightly different route was born. And it's not a bad thing, but there's an obvious reason why the other games never had a female playable character: because the amount of work required to add one, while small, was still insufficient to justify the cost. It's a question of "who is incentivized to buy the game who otherwise would not," and for P4 and P5, the number of people who'd buy a game with a female protagonist but not a male one had to be so small that Atlus wouldn't even bother. Especially P5, where you'd have to rewrite everything involving Shido claiming Joker beat him up and the entire Kamoshida sequence. And it's so odd. You could have effortlessly made a female version of the P3 protagonist, this moody, blue-haired girl. No! They instead make her perky, excitable, and nothing like the boy, and all of the menus change to be pink, which doesn't fit the game's vibe at all. Very strange choices. But just for the novelty of it, I think she has to go in the tier just above average, even if she doesn't quite deserve it. I also enjoy how one of the dancing games reluctantly allowed her to be canon by saying "okay, she's from an alternate dimension that never interacts with the real games except in dancing spinoffs where everyone's memories get wiped afterward."

Tae Takemi: Imagine being a 26-year-old super doctor and falling in love with a 16-year-old boy. Man, 'goth doctor lady' is just too good for me, very solid waifu design choices made here. But I rank her below Kawakami because the teacher-student relationship is just more interesting, and her storyline of trying to cure the dying little girl is more interesting than Kawakami being blackmailed by assholes.

Yu Narukumi: I have not seen the anime, so I'll just rank the game version. He's not really a character in P4, but come P4AU, he talks and has a personality, and he's... just a guy. He's just a generic heroic protagonist. Like, sorry, but I don't play Persona to see its incredible protagonists in action. He's also the protagonist who's probably the least interestingly designed? P3 guy is this dour, moody-looking guy who fits perfectly into a dour, moody game. Joker is this stylish asshole styling on all of his enemies for fun. Yu is just a guy.

Shadow Okumura (Boss Fight): I won't lie to you, I just played P5R, and I don't remember his fight in P5 at all, I only remember the retooled version. And you know what? This was the only boss fight in the entire game that forced me to reset, because I didn't have the right personas to kill all of his final guys with the same attack and ran out of time. Conceptually, the idea of a completely useless, weak boss who fights via minions is fine, but we already got that with Madarame. The fact that he keeps summoning minions is a good idea, but the actual practice gets annoying fast, and if you don't have the correct personas ready, the fight can be sort of unwinnable? I'm sure someone is going to tell me that you can use just Makoto to handle the nuclear-weak guys if you're good enough, but whatever, I'm not good enough. I do like how he ends the fight by telling Haru to explode at you, and it's completely useless, and he feels zero remorse because she's just a tool to him, that's great. But this is not one of the more memorable or fun boss fights in the game.
Lotus Juice (Rapper): Call me uncultured or whatever, but I've never liked rap. A musician who devotes themselves to rap, whatever, go ahead, but I'm not on board.

Fictional High Schoolers Dating Adults in Anime: I've made my peace with this. I just accept that anime characters are all the same age, even if it's explicitly not the case, so you're allowed to have a 15-year-old anime waifu, it's fine. It's only super egregious cases, like Nowi or the P5 twins, that I care about.
Principal Kobayakawa: I'm a little confused about this guy's motives. He accepts Joker into his fancy school because his superiors want to keep a close eye on him. I'm willing to accept that he's just stupid and can't figure out that Joker is a Phantom Thief, but why did his superiors care about Joker pre-Phantom Thiefing, and even post-Phantom Thiefing, the cutaway scenes make it clear that they don't know who Joker is. Like, why is this guy in on the Shido conspiracy in the first place? Everyone else is either a powerful politician or a scientist or has access to a lot of money Shido needs, but this guy is just the principal of a nice high school that has no connection to what's going on until Kamoshida's heart is changed. I don't understand why this nothing man of no importance is involved in the conspiracy at all, much less is trusted with sufficient information about it that he later needs to be whacked. Anyway, he's clearly the least interesting member of the bad guys. Even the SIU Director, who doesn't even have a name, is more interesting than him, because at least he has a scene where he dies realizing he's been betrayed for basically no reason except safety.

Protagonist Death Game Overs: I don't really know why this is a thing. It's not common in most RPGs, Persona is the only JRPG I can think of with this mechanic. It's not necessary for any diagetic reason, so I don't really get it? Although I'll admit, it's basically the only danger you're in most of the time, is a random enemy using brainwash or a OHKO move on the main character, so it at least provides some value in terms of creating stakes.

I think the official explanation is that it's much easier to summon personas in the TV world and the metaverse because they're alternate planes of reality. Whereas the Dark Hour and Tartarus don't have that property.
