It's cool that James gets to make videos with some of his idols from time to time but man does it make for some lousy episodes.

it does seem like he wants to do what's cool for him, not what's cool for his viewers. not that i hate GWAR, it's just like... what does this have to do with the nerd character, retro games, anything?

like the fear and loathing in las vegas thing for vegas stakes. that was some weird project he wanted to do and was so proud, but again- it made for a lousy, strange episode

The problem with making videos with celebrities is there really is not any chemistry between James and them. James isn't a high level actor so he can't simply just act his way into it for what was likely only a one day video shoot.

The Gilbert Gottfried and Toxic Avenger episodes were bad too. The Toxic Avenger episode was considered his worst for quite a while.

as i often say i feel sorry for james he wants to be a film maker but he has no talent for it

he had a early head start on youtube do to knowing some of the basic technical aspects

but now he is so far behind even small channels

Yeah, it felt just as off as the other ones.

Although, weirdly enough, the follow-up video with Culkin and the rest of the Cinemassacre crew was really good. He basically opened up about himself more than he ever had before.

Oh man. That was pretty cringey in the second half of the video, when Gwar showed up. Who I've never even heard of the band, until this episode.

I think it would've been better, if James got his friends, or actors to play a Gwar knockoff band. And shorten the skits, and it might've come out better with much more chemistry. Better yet, don't do any skits and just stick to the video reviews, which this one was fine in the first half of the video.

Yeah, I love GWAR, but I found myself zoning out or trying to fast-forward some of it when they showed up. Knowing the band or not didn't make a difference, and it wasn't much better than the Lloyd Kaufman episode.

And they haven't felt the same since Oderus died (today is also his birthday).

They're a band that got past me, and I've watched Beavis & Butthead as far back as the 90's. And somehow, I didn't pick up or understand the Gwar references, when I watched that show. Their popularity must've been pretty brief, as you've suggested them being past their prime.

That's so cool. I'll have to check out some of their music videos and concerts, next time I'm in the mood. I do get into bands that have gimmicks, like Dragon Force with their songs being based off video games.

That's not GWAR. There's not one single founding member of the band left. The singer who was formally Beefcake is as close as it gets and he was just their second or third bass player back in the mid to late 80's. With Dave Brockies creativity and magnetic personality gone most the music they make is terrible. Literally only one decent song on their last album and it was a tribute song to Oderus. So damn disappointing coming off the backs of such masterpieces as Lust in Space, Bloody Pit of Horror, and Battle Maximus.

I laughed. It wasn't that bad. It was funny enough with just the Mario Paint shit and it was cool to see Mike's art back.

I was never a GWAR fan but of course I know who they are. They are sort of intwined in nerd culture somehow, they always show up at the cons

I only recognize GWAR as the band from the Beavis and Butt-Head game.

IDK, I haven't followed Nerd in awhile. The way his material has aged is a bit of roller coaster. He was the shit back when making web videos wasn't as easy as it is today, his shit had way higher production values than average and on top of that the whole video game analysis/review genre was still in its infancy.

What did you have to compare him to ... Classic Game Room? While a fun series, there wasn't a lot to it aside from some good snark on occasion. MN12Bird? A little too casually niche for most people. Ashens? Also a little too niche for most. Gaming in the Clinton Years? Public Access relic that was mostly just riffed on. X-Play? That was only ever taken seriously by the kids who caught it after school.

So it was okay that he was a filmmaker first, gamer second, and didn't even pretend to be serious about game analysis.

It's a different world now. The language and tone of game analysis has evolved to the point of being outright academic at times. We generally expect a lot more from it now.

Did you see his most recent video about the 100 year anniversary of The Phantom of the Opera? That's his bread and butter, but I don't know if it pays the bills. Not that I dislike his AVGN videos, but James is more than that.

I haven't seen that specific video, but I love his film analysis stuff. I could listen to him talk about movies for hours.

I didn't bring it up in my ramble, but yeah, he can do excellent analysis vids when it's focused on something he's truly passionate about.

That's was part of the point I was trying to make but never got to. His Nerd vids are primarily comedy skits first and foremost. The whole game review/analysis thing was always more of a framing device.

And that was perfectly fine back in 2005 when there wasn't much else like it, at least in video form.

No matter how much he delegates his work to others now, it's like that shit was never gonna be sustainable especially if he wants to make a family. Always thought it was cringe how ppl shat on him for wanting to work reasonable hours, like they're just whipping him in a cage for entertainment. I mean the big problem is the people he chose weren't exactly up to par, but you still see that moment of brilliance when he actually puts his own foot forward
