Also as expect, it seems ICE just detains people based on skin color instead of actual legal status. Some highlights: Executives and other employees of a major South Korean battery maker were among those swept up in an immigration raid at a Hyundai plant in Georgia on Thursday, the manufacturer, LG Energy Solution, said. A U.S. agency said that hundreds of people had been apprehended in the operation. Federal agents took people into custody at a construction site for the electric vehicle battery plant in Ellabell, Ga., near Savannah, according to Steven Schrank, a special agent in charge of Homeland Security investigations for Georgia. South Koreas Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday that South Koreans were among those in custody, without detailing how many. *Mr. Schrank told reporters at the plant on Thursday that some U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents had been detained* and were being released. The operation, part of President Trumps crackdown on immigration, caused diplomatic alarm in South Korea. Just over a week earlier, Mr. Trump hosted President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea at the White House, where the South Korean leader pledged to invest an additional $150 billion in the United States, including in battery manufacturing. The lithium-ion battery plant, which predated Mr. Lees pledge, was expected to start operating next year. Can't imagine that this many undocumented Koreans were working in Georgia but apparently they were all contract workers, and some of these contract companies that hire people to do factory work are pretty sketchy. The South Korean state department is staffing a small office to assist them. Both immigration lawyers and our Homeland Security say there is a 90 day visa that lets the holder be a tourist or participate in business but immigration lawyers says this means they can work on contract and Homeland Security says they need a work permit. Then there may be people who applied for extensions and have been waiting. Whatever side of ICE you are on: this will be bad for the economy of Georgia, this will raise the price of electric cars and of the batteries for them.
