nope. the 2nd amendment should not be a thing. the gun culture in this country should not be a thing. there being more guns in this country than people should not be a thing.

I dunno. I do support the right to own guns for hunting and self defense but obviously, I don't want anyone to die from gun violence

what's fucked up is that even when these things happen to them (i.e. conservatives), instead of taking it as an opportunity to reflect and do something about it, they will continue to act like everything is okay and wont do shit. these guys are hopeless man...

i keep hearing about how there's supposed gun control in the States yet everyday i hear about a new school shooting or whatever. seems to me like its complete bs.

He's correct in his analysis. That is the contract that exists between supporters of gun ownership and society. Death is the price of the Second Amendment, and most Americans are willing for it to be paid.

His children and wife have my sympathy

He was wrong, it's not worth it for people like him to die just so we can avoid moderate gun control legislation.

He only thinks that because by and large its the right that fetishizes guns and largely is responsible for the mass shootings.

Whether he understands that consciously or not is another story.

Kind of fucked up he doesnt even include kids from school shootings in his math.

Any amount of freedom is going to allow the possibility of someone misusing that freedom to hurt others.

I can't say what hypothetical amount of gun violence might be "acceptable" when weighed against a hypothetical correlating degree of freedom to own guns, but the US's ratio is completely fucked, and in no way are our mass shootings an acceptable "sacrifice" for our gun culture.

I personally don't think he's right, but the man lived by the sword and died by the sword so

there was nothing wrong with the intent when written, but as society moved and changed, it should have changed with the times. Heck if held to the militia part, most of the problems wouldnt happen.

A bunch of assholes at the NRA, Republicans and the firearms industry just rewrote history and nobody stopped them because no one notices a slow moving catastrophe.

You are 100% right. Regrettably, one, I live in a red state, two, most of the people I work with are in fact, goppers, and three, they know about where I stand politically wise and like to grill me on shit.

I wouldn't engage with them if they wouldn't provoke and antagonize me over stupid shit. Alas, holding one's tongue is not a gopper strong suit.

makes what happened to a lot of empires in the past make more sense

In theory, we could have legal access to firearms without fostering a culture of gun fetishization that has millions of people actively hoping for an excuse to take a life to the point that a lot of them end up snapping, but we sure made no attempt at curbing that culture. I don't think there's any fixing it without the level of upheaval it would take to fix most everything else wrong with the country.

I guess you can try to make a similar analogy. 40k Americans die each year due to car accidents. Having the road infrastructure, speed limits, laws, etc, has a cost.
My push back would probably be that we at least try to reduce the deaths by making cars and roads safer. Do we do similar for guns? Probably not enough

Yeah, there are many controls and limitations on driving.

Imagine a National Car Association that was vehemently opposed to driving licenses, speed limits, and mandatory safety features.

That 40k from auto deaths is *still* lower than the amount of gun related deaths.

Very true. In 2023, 46k deaths.

Hell, 27k deaths of those were from suicides (mainly men). I'm surprised there hasn't been some push to come at gun reform by appealing to ending suicide of men by guns. Get that men's right activists crowd.

I'm in support of the 2a, though I think the idea that it'll stop an oppressive government is hilariously out dated and it is stupid to let it be used to decide your vote.

I've also always backed reasonable gun control laws and think a license should be necessary for ownership... Just basic safety regulations would significantly cutdown the body count. As a bonus I support M4A which would significantly help mental health care in America.
