This is why I started hating people when I did tech support. I dealt with a lot of really stupid people in the 5.5 years I did that line of work.

The people who just needed help with some problem were fine, but there are a lot of idiots who are extremely hard to deal with. Or they're hilarious. Or both.

No for me but it comes with a disclaimer. I fully admit to being "checked out" As in all I do is work and in my spare time I go to the grocery store and just relax at home and read books, listen to music, game, and watch tv/movies.

95% of my online interaction is gamefaqs and the other is just youtube videos dealing with gaming stuff while killing time at work.

So in many ways I'm just not really exposed to society in a wide lens. I only deal with people directly in real life like coworkers and none of that involves the general public and a few employees at the grocery store I'm chummy with.

You can criticize me and say I'm sticking my head in the sand but I'm much happier for it. My life pretty much stays the same all the time. Now that isn't to say I'm not aware of news stories here and there and stuff going on in the world. I am, but I don't dwell on it and let it get me down and depress me. I take note of it, move on and go back to doing something fun.

Basically I think it is just a whole lot healthier to not really be online. I'm on gamefaqs A LOT like right now when I'm killing time at work. I'll be on here all night, but when I'm at home I'm basically never online. I don't own a cellphone, got rid of my PC 12 years ago from non use. I keep a tablet for minor usage at home like maybe message a few friends or order something on Amazon or check sports scores. But I don't use it much.

I understand some people have to be connected online for their job or other reasons. I get it. But I don't and I think it leads to much more happiness. It's how I grew up. Unconnected. You can say it leads to being uniformed but I'm ok with that. I value my mood higher than being informed of some vile shit happening around the world that just depresses you and you can't do anything about it.

I've been feeling this since 2015.

I can't even talk about why since everytime I talk about the UK I get modded

But let's just say undisputable facts I'm not allowed to talk about in the UK and Donald Trump in the US combined have made it hard to be anything but a Doomer.

The internet should have always been gatekept and it becoming too accessible to too many people has made society and culture significantly worse.

People say this but I'm really not sure.

I feel like the Internet is just a reflection of society more than a cause of societal woes.

Heck I'd even argue the rise in the internet in the late 90s and 2000s is directly what led to LGBT and racism getting taken more seriously.

"The billionaires are using it to control the masses." no shit but they were doing that before the internet anyway.

They didn't need the internet to condone slavery and segregation.

Some people just aren't smart and struggle with tasks, that doesn't speak to their character. Stange reason to hate society.

Yes. Especially the USA government just rolling over and allowing a dictator to take over and destroy the country from within. Followed by so many people cheering as it happens, thinking it's good.

I was never super patriotic or anything, but I at least had some level of faith in the justice system and government. Now, seeing my country in the state it is has destroyed my faith in humanity.

It is really disturbing to learn how little opposition there is to fascism.

Most of America either flat out supports it or will not lift a finger to oppose it.

I think "evil" only represents a small percent of them. Like maybe 8% at most. The rest are very credulous, closed off and VERY susceptible to propaganda. It's apparent that some people just copy what they see around them.

people suck. Strong guardrails are needed to prevent people from sucking. The only people interested in attempting strong guardrails are otherwise sociopathic and thus cannot be allowed power because they will focus on the wrong things/personally enrich themselves (we are currently living in the age where people vote in the sociopaths and seeing why that was a bad idea)

it's a complicated problem.

There was very nasty stuff on the internet from the get go. It's was never the paradise of harmless fun you remember. It's always been a reflection of the best, worst, and mediocre in us.

If I'm feeling down about it, I'll go listen to music, watch a film, or read a book to remind myself of the amazing things humans are also capable of.

There were definitely insane things on the Internet, but the audience was smaller, so not much harm was done. Now that everyone and their grandma is on it, the collateral damage is much greater.
