Always wild seeing Brits talk about how violent and crazy and racist the US is when they had decades of this in their own country. Would not surprise me if they weren't taught much about it or just tuned it out or if the media just didn't pay much attention to it if you weren't from NI. I've met a few people from Belfast and they were pretty over it.

The vast majority of The Troubles took place in Northern Ireland.

The few occasions where it did touch the mainland, it made big news. But for all the time it didn't, most people just thought of it as 'the Irish' having a problem, rather than 'the British'.

My best friend was born in Ireland. Her mom is Irish but her dad is American. She only lived there for a few years before moving to the US but she told me about some of the stuff they had to go through with the British army and it was pretty scary. I hope nothing like that happens here but it's seeming pretty likely with this fascist administration.

That's not at all what it was about. There was no capitalist period in China. China was already ruled by the CCP for some time and then Mao got paranoid and claimed capitalists were trying to infiltrate the party and other areas of society, so in that sense it acted as a political purge. It was also about destroying traditional Chinese culture, countless Chinese cultural artifacts and historical sites were destroyed. There was no sense of poor Chinese overthrowing the capitalists, it was claimed that had already happened and this was to prevent them from getting back into power. It was about Mao maintaining his power.

Some are busy organizing/collecting funds and some are donating money. Let us be generous and say 50% in all.

During its 'Troubles' Ireland had near universal participation. It is not going to fix itself.

Of course that's what it was about. I know what it was about. I never said that it wasn't about that. There is no need to lecture me on Chinese history...I have attended enough lectures on Chinese history in my lifetime.

I meant that the Cultural Revolution PAINTED itself as a class struggle (you seem to have missed that word). It obviously was not one, but Mao at least used the semblance of "taking back the country" from the wealthy capitalists to mobilize so many of the students to join the Red Guards. He sold it to the populace as an economic struggle of "these capitalists and intelligentsia are stealing your money and ruining communism", and as horrible as it was, at least he was good enough at PR to make it *look* like he was fighting for the common man.

Compare that to Trumpism, where you literally have billionaires on Trump's side, and Trump himself is a billionaire landlord, yet he's still able to convince his followers that he's somehow "taking back the country"...like, how the hell can he be "taking back the country" when the wealthiest people in the country are openly on his side and advocating for his shitty policies? And he literally tries to push through a bill which openly says that it is going to lower taxes on the wealthy and cut social services! Mao Zedong at least had to come up with creative PR to convince people to buy into his extremism...Trump can openly and honestly state his intentions to make billionaires (like himself!) wealthier, and people with no money just follow him for some reason. Mao had to sell people a false bag of goods, whereas Trump is able to literally sell people cow manure and they just buy it

That's definitely true for a lot of them, but there are still a lot of Trump supporters who legitimately think that he's going to fix a lot of the problems with our economy.

They cannot for one second come close to pointing out *one thing* he has ever done to improve our economy, but they still think he's going to do it, and they still somehow think that it's the fault of liberals, and not billionaires. It's just amazing to me that Trump can create a cult of personality so powerful that he has convinced so many people that he will fight to improve their economic situations, even though he has never proposed any policy that will benefit them, and in fact constantly associates himself with the people who have put them in shitty economic situations to begin with.

It'd be an amazing topic of sociological study if it weren't dramatically affecting our quality of life, ruining our national prosperity, and empowering Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin.
