Ive been paying attention a lot more to election news and Im starting to gain hope for our future in this regard. Ill list reasons but Im not sure if they are enough or if Im just jumping through a bunch of hoops to try to have hope.

There is the obvious special election results and polling to suggest that the GOP are in pretty big trouble. That is based on policy though. I want to look beyond that.

The first big thing is the gerrymandering. There are a handful of blue states that are bad with this but the vast majority are red states based on what Ive seen. It seems like its getting to a point where the GOP cant really gerrymander without big risks involved. Instead of making guaranteed red districts like in the past, now they are creating more competitive districts that can be swung much easier. There is a good chance that will backfire on them in 2026 and for years to come. Plus, the news about them actively trying to suppress the people will move some people over. Especially those who actually vote in the midterms.

If the gerrymandering ends up backfiring on them then its like a domino effect in theory. More Democrats with more districts. Winning more districts in red states is important because it increases the hope of that party that they can actually win in the state which increases voter turnout. This applies to both the Presidential and Senate races. A prime example of this is the state I live in, Georgia. As soon as people started to have hope the more active theyve become. I expect Georgia to keep slowly trending toward being blue more and more over time.

Another potential positive is that Trump will eventually come to an end. He will not be around forever and, hopefully, cant run in 2028. He doesnt have a successor that really motivates people. I bet a lot of the MAGA base wont even bother voting anymore if he isnt on the ticket. They wont be anywhere near as energized anymore. That also means that there will be less people just going to vote and picking Republican all the way down the ticket even if they dont know who they are. So there should be more opportunities for Democrats to win seats during the actual election.

I feel hopeful for all of these reasons and more but I also feel like Im being naive. I feel like something is clearly wrong with my thought process but I dont know what it is. What do yall think?

I mean I think you're nuts, but I'm also a doomer and people generally don't seem to want to agree with me on how utterly fucked we are, so I guess by way of transitive property or whatever, that means it's justified? I don't know, my head's starting to hurt now.

It really depends on what the Republicans do over the next few years.

It doesn't look good, because there's not much stopping them, but you can have hope for now.

Insanity. Democracy failed the moment we chose to elect Trump a second time. It should be obvious from this that democracy is worthless for progress.

Even if a centrist milquetoast Democrat is elected again someday (the only type of Democrat the current system will allow) and makes a tiny bit of progress, the next Republican will send us back much further.

I don't see how we go back to the status quo after all the damage Trump's done to the country. The current prevailing wisdom on election demographics might not hold any longer by 2030 (2026 and 2028 don't be ordinary elections by any means).

Time is a funny thing, you know? I guess in the big picture of my life, you were only a blip. But oftentimes, those "blips" make the biggest impacts.

Gen z seems to be all Tate fan incel types, and the ones who aren't have grown up under fascism so they think it's normal.

I think there's also a gap between older Gen Z and younger Gen Z, with older Gen Z being closer to Millenials in political views

One thing I will say is that I dont want to make judgements on the entire country based on people online. There are a lot of people terminally online but that is far from the majority. That being said, I will acknowledge more and more people are becoming like that and its not something that can be ignored. I just dont want to use it as the end all be all. Not yet.

Yeah there's a lot of people in this country who are completely tuned out of politics. Like my sister and her husband could maybe name the current president, but that's about it.

Anyway, if a literal fascist coup wasn't enough to get them to pay a little attention, I don't think anything will
