Age verification and the internet changing for the worse is here to stay... The general populace doesn't even give a second thought to saying yes to everything, yes to sharing their data, their ID, just absolutely everything.

I mean... is this a result of a generation having grown up on social media? Are the random few millenials who grew up on the "don't share your personal details on the Internet" mentality that few and far between?

Just Trying to rationalize or even just understand why the general landscape of the internet being enshitified so badly has become so accepted by the population. Is it because they just use the internet for instagram and tiktok so it doesn't really make a difference?

I doubt it. Because the amount of old people that most definitely didn't grow up on social media, whom many of them are the ones that told us not to share identifying information online, are gungho to give up their info.

When there's nothing left to do on the Internet without using your real ID, well, I have a mountainous backlog anyway.

Honestly I think older people are more likely to give out info than younger ones who grew up with social media.

Because we grew up in an era where phone books gave out your name, address and phone number and data wasnt protected. Hell my drivers license number was my social security number in my state. There was no protection whatsoever and we live in a world where you just expect all of your info is out there.

That equifax breach that leaked all the info for like 150 million people of America got me a few years back and had nothing to do with me. It was my info from my job from the state university I work at that was housed on some other server that was part of the breach. I have no control over shit like that.

You can look up peoples houses through the county assessor office and see how may they paid for it, what their taxes are and so on. Its always been public info but mow its all online even in remote bumfuck areas like mine. You can look up peoples names through state court sites and see any tickets or court cases on their record.

Your life is out there in so many aspects. So at a certain point people just dont care.

People used to put their full information on AIM (AOL Instant Messenger). I did the public service of informing them it was unwise...and I would do that by pretending to be a stalker and scare the shit out of them. I WAS 12!

Yeah I think social media has made people less careful. Like people that constantly post their life online. Not ever thinking about how unsafe it is to constantly tell people where you are and where you're going.

To be fair, we're just treating rideshare drivers the same way we've treated taxi drivers for hundreds of years. They're strangers, but they're being paid to provide a service. So at that point, they aren't all that different from other strangers that provide services

Yeah being wary of the Internet is definitely a millennial thing. Boomers download and fall for the dumbest crap because they don't even know it exists. Zoomers were raised pampered because Windows and Apple have good enough built in protection these days to protect them from most things.

Yeah I remember as a kid thinking phone books were absolutely wild, couldn't believe they were real. I think I have a memory of watching Terminator 1 which was what really solidified for me how ridiculous that concept of putting your info in a citywide distributed phone book was.

People put their lives on social media, this messageboard included, and corporations use that to sell advertising.

People not realizing that putting everything on the internet out in the open is unwise is hardly something new

I'm old school at this point. I grew up being told don't reveal your personal information online. I still don't use social media where you're encouraged to use your real name, tbh.

Haven't heard or seen that term in so long, is that term even still a thing? People are posting their real name, posting their location, their house, all of that stuff. It makes me wonder when this shift happened, or as said before was it only ever a select few who grew up with internet cautiousness drilled into us.

If age verification is required to do routine things online, what choice is there? I'm 100% against the erosion of privacy and the loss of digital freedoms, but I do all I can already to increase knowledge of issues and complain to my representatives when I can. What else is there?
