Yea I still haven't watched the premier of My Hero Academia. On launch night it initially came out with no subs. Then they were there but they aren't set right. The subs often aren't on screen the same time people are talking and it's annoying and unpleasant to try to watch it like that so I turned it off a few minutes in and will just wait for the dub. Which is like another week from now.

Apparently they switched to a new subtitle system and it sucks. I will only watch dubs on there now.

Crunchyroll had been dogshit for a long time.

Them fucking up the typesetting and using AI translations should be the final straw for even the most zealous simps.

There are far superior alternatives out there.

I gave up on Crunchyroll entirely when they switched One Piece from being free, to being premium only. Pure greed.

But their half-broken app even before then made it clear that they've sucked for a while now.

Outside of fansubs, all the pirated alternatives just rip their subtitles from Crunchyroll, so the experience is just the same.

Except you're not paying for it, which is a plus.

It was only good when it was legal free anime if you were patient.
The site was still trash.

Now they don't have that aside from One Piece. Meanwhile the high seas have actual good sites.

Basically they got bought out to steal the licenses and monopolize to make money without any effort.
Which is unethical and should not be supported.

Well they are in Texas and that state might soon ban anime. So maybe Crunchyroll will either shut down or be forced to move

Yeah, fansubs only really touch unlicensed stuff these days. Occasionally you get the real sickos who do releases that try to fix things if the Western release isn't up to snuff.

We got a fansub that was superior to Netflix's botched Komi Can't Communicate release, so it's not like decent fansubbers don't exist anymore. They're just not as prolific as they used to be. If there's a need for them, they'll come forward.

Another shitty thing they've been doing is that they've been buying a lot of licenses from various devs, using already existing ports of mobile games that were already on the google playstore/applestore and fucking them up... and all while those games end up getting delisted just so crunchyroll can be the only place to host those games on mobile phones
They were able to add in the ability to unsub to their subscription/delete account in all those ports, but couldn't be bothered with letting you adjust the controls/change opacity/resize virtual buttons...

I actually think Crunchyroll improved vastly since Funimation went away. In the past, I thought Crunchyroll was crap and that Funimation was way better even with its flaws. Especially with how Crunchyroll used to count different languages as different seasons. So a 1 season show would have something like 4-5 different "seasons" listed just because they were different dubbed languages. They don't do that crap anymore. Although the AI subtitles is annoying. Not all shows have it though. I think it's just if the show doesn't have real subtitles, then AI is added in its place.

HiDive does do simulcasts, but sadly, the selection of shows they get each season is pretty small. They occasionally get a big exclusive like Danmachi or Call of the Night, but it's mostly just leftovers that Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu/Disney+, etc. didn't license.

I wish they were bigger and better to actually give CR some competition, but it looks like they're closer to dying outright than they are to catching up.

There's an interesting video from a dude called mothersbasement (I think) that discusses some of the issues.

IMO the issues with crunchyroll generally boil down to a lot of the same issues that streaming has in general. Companies try to cut corners to save money, making the product worse while charging more.

I've heard CR only did that once or twice to test out of if it works. It didn't, got them a bunch of backlash, and they stopped. I could be wrong on that though. Everything else going wrong with them right now is 100% real though. I've been dealing with mistimed subs for the past few weeks now and it's gotten annoying.

Its definitely unacceptable in place of a professional or even a fan translation. But if its between no translation/machine translation and an AI translation, the AI translation is maybe better.

How do people buy Anime and not go broke? It's like $60-$70 for one normal season with a maximum of four commentaries (usually nothing). All other forms of series have gotten their DVDs/Blurays down a lot from like 2010. It went from around $50-$60 to $15-$20. Anime hasn't budged.
