I feel the same way about the Truth and Reconciliation Day that Canada started observing as a federal holiday a few year back. Ostensibly, the holiday is meant to acknowledge the legacy of the Indian Residential School system and the impact it's had on indigenous people, but indigenous people - especially those most deeply affected by all that delightful intergenerational trauma that comes along with cultural genocide - tend to be over-represented in the kinds of jobs that don't give people holidays off unless legally required to. I'm not going to complain about getting the day off myself, a holiday meant to observe the plight of and honour indigenous people that a sizable chunk of indigenous people don't even get to observe kind of falls flat as anything other than slacktivist lip service.

It could if the situation were less monopolistic. There are quite a few things these days that you just straight up can't get these days without going through Amazon, thanks to Amazon putting so many potential competitors out of business. Now, many of those things aren't strictly necessary, especially now that we're out of pandemic lockdowns and no longer have to rely so much on delivery for essentials, and people could instead just not buy them instead of buying from Amazon, but the state of the market still means people don't always have the kind of choices available that are needed to claim it's a free enough market for consumers to carry the blame for how companies treat their employees.

It's part meme, part actual gatekeeping from people who think pizza should only ever be "traditional." Pineapple definitely bucks the trend of only using savoury foods as toppings on pizza, but sweetness does have a valid place in a lot of savoury dishes (perhaps not as many as American tastes tend to shoehorn them into, but a valid place nonetheless), and pizza's no exception in that regard. Beyond pineapple, I've had pizzas with apples, pears, peaches... any fruit that's got enough acidity to pair well with strong cheese and/or that caramelizes well can be made to work on a pizza, provided you design the pizza around that.

A basic Hawaiian chain pizza isn't going to be as gourmet an experience as a pizza with caramelized onions, balsamic-roasted pears, and smoked gouda that goes further in exploring flavours that complement the sweetness of the fruit, but it's the same basic principle of "hey this sweetness goes well here." It's not going to be what everyone wants to eat, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with making it.

Surely you can narrow it down more than that, unless you're actually just pulling claims out of your ass and your opinion has no value whatsoever.

I kiiinda agree, but I think the ratio of good to bad games is pretty similar today to that of yester year. There were a ton of crap old games, I just think we remember the good ones more.

While you're not wrong that there's a huge amount of survivorship bias involved in any claim that old stuff was better, there are definitely more bad games today than previously. Accessible development tools, asset libraries, and digital distribution have done amazing things to help people produce fantastic games that otherwise would never have been made, but they've also made it possible for less scrupulous studios to churn out hundreds of barely-functional asset flips with zero effort. Last year alone, there were over 15,000 games released on Steam, the vast majority of which were garbage. The NES' entire library was only about 2,000 games, for comparison, and it took almost ten years to get that many.

Now, there are also more good games being released than ever before (so much so that it can be a real challenge to keep up with them), so maybe the ratio hasn't changed, but I'm inclined to suspect that the ratio of good:bad has dropped considerably, given just how many bad games come out these days.

That being said, who cares about the bad games? What matters is not how many bad games exist, it's whether or not enough good games exist to satisfy us. In that regard, the industry is probably actually better than ever, even if the bigger picture includes a whole lot of things going very terribly wrong. If I were to compare today's "good" to the "good" of 10 or 20 or 30 years ago, I think I'd give the edge to modern stuff just because there have been so many quality of life improvements to gaming conventions over the years (older games are still perfectly enjoyable, but often with the caveat of needing to accept a certain degree of jank), but ultimately it's all well worth playing and I don't feel compelled to put serious effort into ranking them.

Fictional movies are allowed to make stuff up, but if the movie in question makes a pretense of being consistent with real-world creatures, making up implausible creatures that go against that pretense is inevitably going to rub people the wrong way. People like the Jurassic Park franchise because it has dinosaurs, not because the director wanted to make a pseudo-kaiju movie but didn't have the balls to establish a new franchise in which to do so.

There's also still an expectation for those made-up creature designs to be good, even when there aren't suspension of disbelief issues involved in making them up.

Because at the time it was hard to fathom package logistics that would be able to keep up with deliveries on the scale we see today. With the postal service mostly delivering letters and e-mail effectively replacing most letters, the idea of e-mail making the postal service obsolete wasn't too far-fetched.

In practice, the mere existence of the rule has cooled off most political discussion outside of CE. You get the occasional topic that ignores the rule and gets nuked or locked for it, and others that push the envelope but get to keep going as long as they remain civil. It's not a particularly consistent or predictable policy, but common sense on users' part means it hasn't caused any major problems that I've seen.

Obviously, that's not a good way to run a forum, but it gets the job done and that's all Fandom really cares about as they try to wrangle GameFAQs into something with any real commercial value.

I can see how that would have been handy. I never really engaged with the gallery in any version because it's just a little too involved for my tastes, so even with Miiverse integration I didn't pay it enough attention to take advantage of that.

Because there is no clear definition of what constitutes political topics. Any attempts they've made to provide direction have been plagued by mixed messaging and immediately fell apart under light scrutiny because grey areas are everywhere.

Depending on how you want to approach it, almost anything can be considered "politics," or almost nothing can, or anywhere between those extremes. Fandom's come at this with a vague "maybe people don't like that people are talking about politics instead of video games and that's why nobody new is joining the community," and that vagueness has carried into the policy and its enforcement.

Console prices this Gen haven't really dropped like they have in the past. I remember getting my slim PS4 for $150 IIRC on Black Friday. I don't think anything this gen besides the Switch Lite has gone anywhere near that low.

Really, the last few years have been weird, economically speaking. Just looking at inflation, $300 for a Switch in 2017 would be equivalent to almost $400 today, whereas $300 in 2013 (when the PS4 came out) would have been equivalent to ~$335 when the PS5 came out in 2020. Covid and crypto mining also made a mess of the electronics market in ways that it's still recovering from, which I would expect meant they couldn't take advantage of the kind of reductions in manufacturing costs that they'd be used to.

Though the more salient point is probably that people expect there to be weird economic factors, and that lets companies get away with keeping prices steadier/higher than usual.

The term was coined by Dawkins in the 70's as part of codifying "memetics" as a theory of cultural evolution. Essentially, a meme is the fundamental unit of cultural evolution, the same way that a gene is the fundamental unit of biological evolution. The term has pretty much been entirely taken over (at least in colloquial speech) by laypeople using it to refer to running gags, inside jokes, and any other kind of humourous content that gets shared within a community, but that usage still comprises a subset of the original application.

If the studio's response has been to stifle criticism, I wouldn't hold my breath on that. The absolute bare minimum requirement for committing to fixing the problems is acknowledging that they're there in the first place.

This is the one situation where dlc "skins" would help, and also show the younger generation about the early iterations. Also, in my personal case, I tend to not be so critical of the newer designs if I have the option to swap between.

Or skins that are unlocked normally by playing through the game instead of buying them with real money, but perhaps that's a tall ask in today's game industry.

The problem with porting WWHD is that any system other than the WiiU is going to miss out on one of the best improvements (the gamepad map). Fast sailing and the streamlined Triforce hunt are still worthwhile improvements even without that, but anyone playing it without the gamepad is really missing out.

It's specifically designed to do so. There's also a lot of actual bad stuff happening that's worth being anxious about, so anyone (*coughPOcough*) coming in here and saying that there aren't any real problems and it's all just social media fearmongering are just straight-up wrong, but social media algorithms explicitly aim to feed you stuff with which you'll engage. Very often, that means stuff the algorithm has figured out will upset you, and that makes everything seem dramatically worse.

It's kind of funny how if you just stick a bunch of assorted deli meat and cheese and fruit on a plate and call it a meal, you're just slapping together whatever's in the fridge. Put it on a piece of wood, though, and it becomes charcuterie.

Partially, but a car is significantly more expensive than the raw materials are, owing to the R&D costs, labour costs, manufacturing machinery costs, the opportunity costs of using that machinery to make that car instead of something else, and the need to skim some extra revenue off the top to pay each level of management involved in getting the car to the consumer. If you "download a car," so to speak, you're also incurring some of those yourself (you paid for the 3D printer, you'll be putting labour into assembling it, there's an opportunity cost in using the printer for that), but you skip the R&D costs and don't have to pay for any sort of corporate structure or generate a profit, so there are quite a few opportunities for savings there if you can afford the up-front investment (and don't mind compromising quite a bit on quality).

The Switch 2 also kinda 'maxes out' my TV as it's 4K but I never had a 4K console hooked up. Everything looks great, and it's nice finishing up some older games. I just beat the final boss in Pikmin 4, and while there aren't any major improvements to the game (framerate, resolution etc), it still loads waayyyyy faster for the caves, which was actually really nice.

@papercup I remember you were asking about how Pikmin performs on the Switch 2.

If a single video game can "ruin" a relationship, I'd say the relationship was already pretty much ruined to begin with.

I would think the shaft chef would play a greater role in the size of the bulge than the head chef.

Downloading a purse is pretty easy these days, if you've got a 3D printer. You can download a car the same way, but it's significantly more involved unless you just want a miniature.

While there are certainly political aspects involved in dairy farming, and one could potentially bring those up in discussing the consumption of milk, I don't think it's particularly necessary to make that connection in simply discussing how to serve milk.

I haven't bought one yet, but I'd say the thought process should mostly boil down to asking whether or not you want to play Mario Kart now (or whenever you can find one). If so, you've got a reason to get one now, and there's unlikely to be any real benefit to waiting any longer (this price is unlikely to drop for at least a couple years, by which point there'll be considerably more games available). If not, wait until games you do want to play come out and repeat the same thought process then.

For me, I know I'll eventually want one regardless of what's available now (mostly for whatever happens with Xenoblade and Zelda, but there are already enough interesting games confirmed to be coming to make me feel justified in buying the system), and I want Mario Kart. I'm in no great rush to play MK, though, so I'm being pretty casual about hunting for one.

A few different people have asked you for the definition you want to use for fast food. Perhaps you should take a stab at defining it instead of just looking for examples of things that you think don't qualify.

It's also worth noting that "fast food" is often used as a blanket term for any ultra-processed convenience food, regardless of how the restaurant is configured. In that regard, it's being used to refer to the nutritional value of the food, not the delivery format. You'll have to look at the context to figure when that connotation comes into play.

It's not just speed, it's the extent to which the model prioritizes customer turnover. The idea is for customers to be able to order their meal, receive it, and be on their way quickly, offering a convenient, flexible experience for the customer and allowing the restaurant to serve a large number of people in a relatively short amount of time.

If the expectation is that customers are sitting down to eat (as is the case with free bread and buffets), you don't have a model that prioritizes customer turnover, and therefore you can't really call it fast food.

Arguably, but I also wouldn't classify getting a Big Mac delivered to your door in roughly the same time frame to be "fast food." I consider "fast food" to refer specifically to pick-up stuff that's provided rapidly because it's not made to order. If it's getting delivered, it's delivery.
