There's plenty of movies shot on film that look like shit and plenty of movies shot on digital that look great.

and yet! all the best looking movies are shot on film and all the worst looking ones are shot on digital. furthermore the baseline for how good movies look has lowered over time as digital is used more often. how do you explain this?

Digital photography is just a tool. What happens is that it makes things much easier and the process faster and cheaper than analog editing, so there's often less thought and care that goes into shots - "We'll fix it in post" instead of insisting on getting the shot right in camera.

and this thought process being so pervasive is why it is a scourge to the artform. had it never existed and we stuck with film, everything would look substantially better. now almost no one uses film anymore and shit looks fuckin terrible. the end.

• digital photography - it is ugly and that makes it a bad fit for a visual medium
• studios using all of their resources on anonymous "directors" making movies about your favorite video game, comic book, 80s/90s nostalgia IP, etc over and over instead of moving on to something else or letting a great filmmaker do something neat
• new exciting filmmakers immediately selling out to make the lion king or barbie or television or whatever
• legacy filmmakers inching closer and closer to death while flopping at the box office
• streaming causing people to not go to the theater and enjoy the communal experience on the biggest screen and loudest sound system, opting to scroll around on their phone or do chores to the point where they need a youtube explainer of the movie since they didn't actually watch it
• dominant, most popular cinematic language being either solemn dirges by nolan/villeneuve with no verve OR cgi/blue screen/volume vfx driven 'spectacle' with no craft whatsoever and reddit quips and easter eggs to make people soy face

It isnt pure speed, sure. Mark Grace had a very sure glove despite horrendous speed. He also hit .300 year after year. He needed to being something additional to the game if he was going to be afforded a spot at a power position, despite never hitting more than 17 HRs in a season.

And yes, late game defensive specialists are very much a thing. But those specialists are typically in the outfield (where speed is very much required) or 1B. I just cant imagine a woman being that good at fielding where a team would want to have her in a game, despite the other weaknesses that would come with her game.

yeah mark grace was good. but i'm pretty sure a theoretical athletic woman could run faster than mark grace if he got on base in the 9th inning in a tie game.

billy hamilton used to also be very good at defense, but he isn't anymore. probably cuz he's slowed down and why he is unemployed. and i did clarify glove/speed specialist not *just* speed. anyway aaron judge and nolan jones and juan soto and max kepler and joey gallo have recorded +5 OAA seasons in the outfield despite not being speedsters.

obviously she would be the very last spot on the roster for a playoff team but to be so adamant that it is completely out of the question is a bit lol

this isn't even a thing anymore really. the average fastball velo has grown like 5+mph over the last 15 years. if you throw 89mph you need ELITE elite, like super elite, command of all of your pitches. which is why there were like three (ryu, hendricks, someone else?) dudes throwing that slow last year who were any good.

I dont think any woman can be faster than a current major leaguer. Even if she was very reliable with the glove, youre losing a lot of range. And as you said, the bat is going to be a glaring weakness.

i think you are underestimating how slow some baseball players are... good defense also isn't just pure speed, you need to take good routes and have good instincts with tracking groundballs in the infield or flyballs in the outfield. lots of guys who grade out as poor baserunners are elite defenders and vice versa.

plus teams will roster guys in the playoffs specifically for speed/defense, especially for pinch running situations late in games. terrence gore for example.
