We now had 3 games in a row with a case that has been called the best non-finale case and they all scored roughly the same! L-3 gets praise for Jean, Emeer, and the many twists. Many also said it made PLvPW worth it.

Summary:

This is technically 3 separate cases: The Final Witch Trial, The Last Inquisitor, The First Story. This will just be counted as one total case.

Phoenix takes on Espella's defense one last time as the city prepares to judge the Great Witch, while Layton uncovers the truth behind the Storyteller.

My rating: 1/10. This is a contender for my least favorite case in the series. For starters, Espella, Darklaw, and the Storyteller are all characters I do not find compelling at all. Having them take center stage is justbad. This is definitely more of a Layton ending than an Ace Attorney ending. While I dont mind Layton endings, the two games styles really clash here. Its also just really long.

The Fire Witch was liked for the introduction of the prosecutor, Barnham. There were mixed opinions on the witnesses themselves; though, "Some Guy" was quite liked. Of the 12 votes, 6 of them were 6/10.

Summary:

Maya keeps up her winning streak of at least one murder charge per game, and Phoenix takes on the impossible task of solving a case where the victim has turned to gold.

My rating: 9.5/10. I may have rated it a bit high just because I didn't expect such a high quality case from this game, but man, there's a ton going on. Layton being the victim causes Luke to testify against Maya, Jean stands out as a tragic character even considering the entire scope of the AA series, and then Emeer of all people comes back to bring some levity to the case. The ending is a massive gut punch, even if I didn't think they went through with killing Maya. But it's treated seriously in-universe and you don't find Maya for some time, making everyone wrestle with the ending.

Crunches are bad in the sense that I hate anything that demands perfection to fully complete. To its credit, it's gotten better as I complete more mini-games. You're always doing something in crunches, while several mini-games have a lot of breaktime. Crunches doesn't really feel like it takes that long in retrospect.

G-bike is whatever. I would have ranked it way lower. I didn't really like the motorcycle parts of Remake either!

Junon Parade is good. I'm not sure if you could practice the different formations, but I would have liked that. 7th Infantry is really good, as I said before. I had no idea people loved the Junon chapter. I thought it was fine, but it might be the worst region in the game for me?

I didn't like Roche in Remake, but I felt like Rebirth Roche took the good/meme parts of Roche and racketed them way up. I liked that he became a black cloak at the end, too. Really effective use of him.

Rude's easily my favorite Turk, but I don't really like the Turks that much! While I docked Tseng points for being too unflappable, Rude's a much better example of giving him characterization underneath his cool exterior.

Cloud's good for what he is. Flashback Cloud is really great and you can feel how off Cloud is immediately. The hallucinations are brought up a lot...possibly too much, but it makes the standout moments in Gongaga and Temple of the Ancients really shine. I'm a bit mixed on how the party treats Cloud. It's ultimately "right" that they don't blame Cloud for his mental breakdowns, but at the same time...he really fucks over the party. The Skywheel dates are all pretty muted moments for Cloud too except Yuffie and maybe Tifa.

Just finished Case 1. Not reading anything in the topic until I finish the game and just posting thoughts.

It's promising! I like that the tutorial already puts the idea that you can point out a mistake through evidence, through emotions, or through surface-level thoughts, even if you don't actually do that beyond the tutorial. The characters are good and I actually like the art/animations for what it is. The story is good, too. While there are naturally corrupt societies and institutions, Ace Attorney doesn't really dwell on it as this game already shows it does. There's divisions between allies and very few seem satisfied with the status quo, but for different reasons.

I definitely appreciate the tabletop-isms of each spell having a lot of small differences and the way that it's measured out on a grid. I'm not sure if this game started as an Ace Attorney game that grew more into tabletop or started as a tabletop that grew more into Ace Attorney. In any case, I'm all for it, as someone who really enjoys both of these topics.

Psychological profiles and empowered eye are both nice. I definitely had issues with empowered eye, but I do really like that there's a ton of optional dialogue here like Pierce musing that he has an affinity for water magic.

Not too many thoughts regarding this case, largely due to the game its in...and that it's forgettable even in the game its in. People liked that it's unique in the series for not having any pretense of murder and people generally liked Olivia. We also went through 20 cases without Phoenix/Maya so seeing them back together is great!

With Espella accused of witchcraft and famed inquisitor Zacharias Barnham prosecuting her case, the only thing standing between her and the stake is Ace Baker Phoenix Wright and a certain gentleman professor.

My rating: 6.5/10. Pretty solid case. I don't really mind the caricature witnesses and, honestly, this is a pretty good selection. In some sense, it's actually pretty difficult to figure out who the murderer is because none of them really give killer vibes. Barnham pulls off the "friendly prosecutor" style way better than Klavier does and I always felt he's a really underrated prosecutor. I think he's my 4th favorite "regular prosecutor" after Edgeworth, Blackquill, and Godot. Emeer gives this case a solid point. He adds a lot of life midway through the case and makes it really memorable.

5-6 lands just below the 9.0 mark and currently stands as the highest ranked non-finale case. Indeed, many people said exactly that: this case is the best non-finale case in the series and an excellent example of how a case doesn't need drama to be really, really good.

Summary:

Phoenix and Maya's exchange trip to London is interrupted when Phoenix is asked to defend a strange girl, Espella, on charges of assault. But why is she pleading guilty?

My rating: 2/10. This is...certainly a case that exists. It's a shame that PLvAA has a unique gimmick with magic being presentable and mob testimonies, but the first case doesn't really do any of that. Also, the really good PLvAA soundtrack doesn't play here! We instead get a remix of AA1's soundtrack, which...well, it's nice but I don't really like the remix. I don't like Espella, but she's especially bad in this case by not...emoting at all. Johnny Smiles feels kinda like a fanmade character. That said, I'll give this case a point just for Olivia. She's a fun character and adds some surprises in this case. It's also so short that I really can't fault it that much.

Yuffie's fun and adds a lot to the party dynamic. I don't think she comes off as annoying, but I do think she can be out-of-sync with the party, especially on materia. Very strange to have her see a Weapon and think about taking the Weapon's materia for itself and then switch over to Scarlet thinking the exact same thing. Similarly, her focus on materia feels a little too pronounced and her one character trait at times. I do like her more when she shows her more aggressive side, especially around Wutai. It rounds out her character. She also surprisingly works well with Kyrie. I couldn't stand the Kyrie quests, but the last one with Yuffie was good for both of them.

Hojo's great and should definitely be above Rufus! Rufus is just a big ? to me. I feel like nothing he does makes sense, but I don't think that's the point of his character.

5-5 gets praise all around, ranging from Blackquill's testimony/Mood Matrix, Apollo's testimony, Aura and the setpiece of the exploded courtroom, and Edgeworth. The Phantom is a mixed bag. People liked the premise and figuring out the Phantom, but maybe not the ending of exposing The Phantom. The Phantom's real identity also caused some concerns.

Summary:

This extra case slips in between cases 2 and 3, showcasing Phoenix's first returning case as a lawyer, and featuring a rather unusual client.

My rating: 9/10. The DLC case really surprised me. I expected a so-so case, which is how it felt a bit at first, but it really evolved into something great. Ora as the defendant goes through more twists than I expected, Crab is a wonderful red herring of a witness, and Rimes is, of course, incredibly memorable. The ending is also really good and makes this case feel wholly unique. Also, props to using Pearl! She shows up in 5-5 technically but she actually plays a role here.

I'm pretty sure dragons are my least favorite type.

I like Fulbright pre-Phantom! A lot of that was due to his theme song, but he's fine. He definitely is the flattest of the recurring characters, though.

AFAIK we've never heard anything like this, but I can't help but feel that at some point in the writing process they were just going to have Gumshoe be in the detective role. Whether it was when they came up with the Phantom or we'll after, they chickened out.

Maybe this explains why Gumshoe is so out-of-character in 4-0...!

That would really sting, though. It would definitely make the Phantom more impactful, but...I think that's too cynical for this series, especially after AJ.

Chadley's fine. I really liked his final world intel scene about building an archive. Agreed that he speaks a little too much and too many of the same lines.

Moogles and Palmer are fine. Tseng is the same age when Aerith is a child, so he probably is 40+ and just has a really good skincare routine. I think Tseng is too unflappable. I never feel like he breaks out of his very set characterization.

I really enjoy battles; though, the toughest challenges are the worst optional content in the game. It's not even postgame content, because the Mindflayer challenge and some of the two-people challenges are rough. But yeah, I like the skeleton of the combat system a ton. I always loved action RPGs and pressure is a really neat way to make fights interesting.

I learned recently that Test 0 is actually a reference to a glitch in the original game, which is really neat.

Looking at the list, Sci-Fi has some overlaps with some of the big movies like Terminator and Back to the Future, but there's still a bunch we can do.

Some people saw it as a negative, some people saw it as...maybe positive, maybe neutral. People generally liked the cast, with Cosmos being a highlight. But it's clear that the heavy hits in this case are saved for...

My rating: 7/10. It's a decent finale. A clear step below the big guns, but definitely leaves on a positive note compared to other finale cases. Highlights include Edgeworth going all-out against Athena, Apollo's testimony, Blackquill's mix of Mood Matrix and testimony, and...a little bit of The Phantom. Him unmasking himself to be Starbuck is one of the most comedic moments in all of DD. And figuring out who The Phantom is was pretty interesting at first. But he's just a complete nothing of a final villain. He backs down way too easily and his whole "I don't know who I am" is a comically weak motivation for a final villain. Even with my grips against 4-4 and E1-5, I thought the final villain was at least imposing. Not really sure how to square away Fulbright either. I was hoping for more from him and...well, I'm not really happy with what I got.

Don't think I can do this, but tagging for future interest.

Even after reading the write-ups, I still don't see The Shining being beloved. I agree that it does a lot right, but it stumbles the fundamentals in a way that I can't ever see myself loving it.

5-3 scores pretty highly! Many praised how fun the case is and, in particular, Means and his transformation. Others had issues with how they handled Robin and some of the stretches in the murder, such as "You're a goner!"

Summary:

When Apollo takes a case defending one friend in the murder of another, we finally catch up to Case 1, and the circumstances behind the courthouse bombing. Pushed to his limits as a lawyer, Apollo strikes out on his own to find the truth.

My rating: 6/10. This case bucks the trend in two ways. It's a two-day case, but we skip Investigation 1 and go straight to Trial 1. In addition, this is the first case split between two cases, causing headaches for Ace Attorney case rankers everywhere. This one does feel pretty evenly divided, though. Punished Apollo and Blackquill is a good bout and Starbuck, even though he's quite annoying at first, grows on me. Clay is an interesting addition to Apollo's evergrowing backstory. Cosmos is a fun witness to go up against and...I just really love the setting. I've always enjoyed space exploration and all the space characters just sit well with me.
