one is a really obtuse logic puzzle game with mindfuck elements, the other is a 3d cover based isometric shooter.

The huge drop in difficulty after 3 was 1 reason. Also 2 and 3 have two of the best soundtracks in the original series. They're my personal #1 and #2 soundtrack of the original series.

Ah I see. I never really went into this series thinking it was the difficulty that made the classics work so well.

I see your point. I would have convsidered Waveman's level a "water" level as much as Toadman but I do agree that the 2 levels have no underwater segments enough to be justifiable as such.

Btw, I came late to this thread so...is there a reason why Megaman and Bass and Time Man / Oil Man is not in this ranking?

The Diveman track is the first that got stuck in my head. I love the level and the underwater theme and the fact that its an underwater level that doesn't suck so much. And the gall of putting 2 water themed levels in the same game (Toadman too) is bold.

It's certainly a very unique experience. Would not recommend if you hate trial and error and repetition. Conceptually, it's brilliant; you get to learn something new about a groundhog loop so you can use that knowledge for future runs until you get the optimal true ending. When put to practice however, the repetitive grind slowly dawns on you and it boils down to how well you can memorize previous steps in an elaborate equation.

Thematically, it's hilarious. I mean if you're into dark humor and gore. The big boobed teacher is my favorite character.

I know its been way past, but I feel like Killer Croc has become this midcarder because of the writers over the years. He wasn't like this when he started, but they chose to focus on his monstrosity as a character trait more than his overall qualities and eventually he got casted into a midcarder mold.
