It felt short. Probably because they cut down on the game sequences and Ender's inner monologue can't make the jump from page to film. That said, cutting those game sequences makes it harder to know the kind of isolation Ender experiences. It's too bad, because those passages seem like they would have done great work bridging the gap here. Also the siblings and their intrigue on Earth is completely forgotten after the movie's beginning which means the film can't explain why Ender can't return home after it's conclusion.

People died in some of Avalanche's raids on Shinra, people who had nothing to do with Shinra or Barrett's ongoing campaign of revenge. Reeve calls Barrett out on this the second time you visit the Golden Saucer to get the keystone. Barrett didn't think about it much because he was so focused on his mission, but he acknowledges that he took a lot of the harm he caused for granted, and that it took the deaths of his team to realize he wasn't really fighting for the planet, but was still trying to take revenge on Shinra for the destruction of his home town.

TLDR: Avalanche certainly isn't a good group. They're definitely terrorists.

Out of curiosity... what do you think the book is likely to be about? I understand you're calling them out on speculating as if it were fact, but you're also not doing anything to argue that their claims aren't likely true based on everything else she's said about the election.

I've only read two excerpts from the book, both anecdotes about the frustrations of being a political being, both tackling it from different directions. Her joke about shooting varmits on a stage in Oklahoma is about the absurdity of transforming yourself to campaign on a democratic platform in a state like Oklahoma, literal pandering. The anecdote about the Bernie debate was about the frustration of having to play superego to the democratic id of Bernie's optimistic campaign promises.

Looking at those two stories I could assume that the whole book is full of stories like that, but I've literally seen less than one-percent of a several hundred page memoir, and any conclusions I could draw from such a small sample size would be ridiculous. I know that. I suspect most of us know that. And yet...

TLDR. I don't know. I haven't any information with which to speculate except perhaps the title, which just tells me that this is a book about the 2015-2016 election told from her perspective.

I call bullshit. We've had entire election cycles dominated by whether someone was "flip-flopping" too much. It basically killed Kerry's white house run. It has nothing to do with her being a woman. Romney suffered the same issue with his attempt as looking like "an average joe" and he got called fake too. This isn't a uniquely man vs woman thing. It happens to ANY politician that acts like they're better than everyone else right up until the moment they need to pander for votes.

But in both cases those accusations of flip-flopping were coming from the opposition, not from within your own party. Inter-party GOP support for Romney in 2012 and democratic support for Kerry in 2004 were both nearly unanimous. Compare those to the come down from the 2016 DNC going forward to that November.

When I look at how people reacted to her in the eighties and seventies, when she was less of the wife and more of the business partner, I get it. Her first public opinions gave people an impression of someone who was inappropriately assertive, and it ended up sabotaging some of Bill's political ambitions, so she altered it. And that's how we get her baking cookies in the WH in the early nineties.

People were correct to read that change in demeanor as calculated, because it absolutely was. But it was calculated in response to our initial reactions of her. And over the course of her political appearances she developed a reputation of adaopting various hats for political convenience. Thing is, politicians do that all the time. We can google 'Bill Clinton black vote' for an excellent example of a time when it appeared to work. But where people were willing to accept the pantomimes of male politicians, Hillary has always been accused of being fake, mercenary, and assertive.

Yes. They would have been fire at exposing the racial violence on the west coast in the nineties, prior to the OJ trial. It was that atmosphere that made the trial so polarizing, but the reporting on that was very piecemeal and a lot of us had no idea because no one talked about it. So a lot of the back story of that mess was and still is lost to much of middle America who was isolated from that information network. Advances in information technology make that kind of media blackout much harder, and make the patterns much more obvious.

That's not what the poll in 41 shows. Both white and black people reported better race relations then and worse race relations now.

The poll is a reflection of personal opinions. The only objective observation you can make is that the poll takers have those specific opinions. You can't apply that to thirty years of the evolving racial zeitgeist. Especially in the current media landscape. The poll also misses from majorly divisive moments from the nineties including the trial that more or less codified the format for what would become the 24 hour news cycle, and the racial tension in LA in the late eighties and early nineties.

Regardless, to carry my metaphor over from that earlier post, we're in the middle of an argument where we're directly addressing topics we're been afraid to name for forty years. Of course current morale is low. Who feels good in the middle of an argument?

I disagree that race relations are worse in America.

Yes. White people were happier in the previous two decades not knowing there is a problem, but as has already been mentioned, non-white people have always dealt with the inescapable fall out of that problem. One side living in blissful ignorance white the other stews in silent resentment isn't 'objectively better.' The implicit power imbalance on display bares a lot of similarities to dysfunctional or abusive relationships plagued with major communication problems.

Talking earnestly about that problem without getting defensive still isn't something we can quite come to yet. But letting the conversation topic die so we can return to the illusion of cohesion from the eighties and nineties is the last thing non-white America should want, because when people in power are content there is nothing motivating them to change the status quo. I would argue race relations are better now than they were because we're no longer silently stewing in our dysfunction, but trying to directly address it, and negotiate something better.

That goes double for, since a lot of our names aren't even native to English, but are immigrants from other non-English speaking nations. McGregor is almost certainly a glottal shift from one of those, but that's off topic.

Xerox got tied up in a similar lawsuit over people using the word 'xerox' to refer to the process of making copies democratizing the Xerox brand. In this case, the 'Mc' prefix ironically devalues whatever its attached too, and again risks changing the intended meaning of the word.

Then there's the post punk revival of the end of the millennium that arose as an artistic rejection of commercial and vapid pop punk of 1997-200X. The Dismemberment Plan, Interpol, The Killers, The Strokes, The National, LCD Soundsystem, and the rock genres that grew from that.

Then there's the fashion, the media reaction, and the politics. Frankly, metal doesn't seem anywhere near as artistically deep or rich as punk. I can't see how we're even putting these two ideas on the same level as one another.
