TopicHow come Mario hasn't been called out for being a racist portrayal or italians
masterpug53

I'd say that, apart from references to the mob and maybe making fun of their speech patterns when speaking English, most Italian stereotypes ('they make great food, talk with their hands and don't bottle up their emotions') are positive or at least benign rather than negative.

People have been poking fun at Mario being a stereotype for years, but nothing's ever come out of it because I have to assume no one's seriously offended by it.

In my experience, a "tornado warning" has always meant an extremely severe thunderstorm. I mean, I know what "tornado warning" actually means, but still.

On a related note, despite thankfully never seeing one in person, tornadoes have been a recurring theme in my dreams since I was young. In fact, one appeared in my dream last night.

It does seem like in the last few years they've broadened the 'Warning' status to either situations that will very likely produce a tornado, or they're tracking a particular spot that shows unconfirmed signs of tornado activity; you don't necessarily need a sighting to incur a Warning anymore. Which is fine, better safe than sorry given how sudden and unpredictable they are.

And I sympathize to the letter - never seen an actual funnel cloud myself (though I have seen nearby storm cells that were later confirmed to have tornadoes in them). But they've always been my biggest fear, and I still have occasional nightmares about them to this day, to the point where I try to avoid looking at pictures of them for too long in case it might trigger a dream later.

Seems reasonable.

The annoying part is leveling a Mathematician to the point where you can unlock the needed abilities. What I do is go into a fight with Math in the edge / corner, and make sure he / she can use an easily-spammable move like the Squire ability Focus. Surround him with Ramza and someone who knows Haste (who can also preferably heal), and two bruisers to tank the enemies and keep them at bay (you don't want to win the fight until you're done grinding). Keep Haste up on the Math, and have Ramza spam on the Math his unique move that adds a Speed Point (Yell? Been awhile since I played the PSX version). Within 4-5 turns the Math will be taking action about every other round, and you can grind out his abilities in no time.

Is that an unreasonable defense?

In other genres, people love a good villain but hate characters that shows present as good guys whose actions say otherwise.

Well, by literal definition, it is an unreasonable defense because it's most often a reaction fueled by emotion rather than reason. But technically no, it's not unreasonable, just a bit weak imo.

To me, characters breaking the roles the narrative initially sets for them can become much more interesting and engrossing characters because of it. It's why I was able to quite gleefully accept, say, Walter White's transformation from well-meaning good guy to maniacal drug lord. Now think of all those people who can't look past their first impression of Walter and continue thinking he's in the right all the way up to the end of the show, and viciously shit all over Skyler for being his foil. When you get wrapped up too much in what a character 'should be' instead of what a character 'is,' you deprive yourself of enjoying their potential range of humanity, good and bad.

I think the blame is more or less equally parceled out across multiple parties - GRRM, D&D, the director of a particularly bad or underwhelming ep, right down to the costume designer who came in hungover one day and ordered Euron's wardrobe straight out of the Hugo Boss catalog.

I do get tired of people who dump the blame exclusively at D&D's feet, though. I'm sure they are directly responsible for plenty of the show's missteps, but they've always gotten plenty of sympathy from me over the unenviable task of adapting and unfilmable and unfinished book series.

an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation, especially as a contrived plot device in a play or novel.

You shot yourself in the foot by providing the definition. The Dany save was obviously telegraphed not ten minutes before it happened, and it doesn't count as deus ex machina when the 'deus' is standing five feet from the person being saved the whole time. So to reiterate DreadedWave, none of those moments count as deus ex machina with the possible exception of the Benjen one (the only argument you could make against that one being deus ex is that it was known that Benjen was just hanging out somewhere beyond the Wall waiting for some way to be useful).

Depends on how many javelins he had. It's reasonable to assume that they're high-powered artifacts in fairly short supply if they can cut through dragonhide like butter. Because it's a lot easier for one human sitting bored on a rock to sidestep a javelin toss than it is for a massive dragon to dodge one mid-flight, especially if it's too busy roasting zombies to notice.

I still think you're giving JD too much credit. All his efforts to make it right again are undone the next time he's an ass. And his romantic relationships are just him being a shit person and then eventually he and Elliott settle for each other because they're incapable of having adult relationships.
On Ross, I tend to agree.

I still think this makes JD a good character, or at least a true-to-life one. I've known at least a few asses in my day who were always repentant of their jackassery, but it was too imbedded in their nature for them to truly change, even though they did try and did ultimately make minute self-improvements. Point in fact I wouldn't like JD half as much as a character if he wasn't the way he was. A good ensemble cast has the ability to juggle your sympathies between characters when one or two of them is an ass and the rest have to put up with him / her / them.

My only true complaint with JD's character arc was in Season 3, when they arbitrarily gave Sean a handful of out-of-character dickish moments just for the sake of painting JD as the underdog hero in the love triangle.

It seems like it would be a mixed ability between earth and fire. I tried to figure out if the concept of lavabending was a break in the lore between TLA and LoK, but IIRC, the only people shown bending lava in the original series are Avatars Kyoshi and Roku, who of course have access to all four elements.

I can't comment on Gazhan's lineage, but it's actually kind of intriguing that Bolin unlocked lavabending, considering he had a firebender mother and an earthbender father. It's not something they touched on in LoK, but if we ever get blessed with a third series, I'd like to see dual-bending become a thing now that interbreeding between nations is becoming much more prevalent (this would also expand upon LoK's central theme of the Avatar stuggling to maintain relevance in a rapidly-developing world).

Twilight Princess isn't my favorite Zelda game, but its high mark was having the best dungeons. The real selling point was how it attempted to make some of them feel like natural settings in the world (the mountaintop mansion in particular), as opposed to the more arbitrary temples.

By contrast, LttP and Wind Waker - two of my favorite Zelda games - ended up having the blandest dungeons (though you could argue hardware limitations on the former).
