I forgot that they gave you some free time in the main game, and this is usually just before a murder takes place. I checked to see my coin total, and 249 seems like quite a bit. Let's use some. Nobody is manning the store, which I think was the case in THH at least, so I guess the gumball machine is my only option. Not that anybody cares, but I decided to use one coin until repeat rate hits 50%. I ended up with 35% of items discovered and 180 coins remaining, and that seemed like a good stopping point.

In past games, I think that I "strategized" my free time hangouts by targeting players I thought would last awhile. However, I am pretty sure that it is ultimately meaningless as there's no meaningful reward for friendship levels, and the games had a post-game mode made for the purpose of maxing them out. Before that though, I decided to see if previously locked areas were now accessible.

The piano room is still locked, but I could get in the nearby classroom. It doesn't seem any different from the previous two I've been in, so I don't get why I couldn't be in this room before. The game room's sliding door leads to an A/V room, but the room leading out of here and into the hallway just outside of library remains unusuable. I long assumed the black and white checkered door near the gym is the class trial room, and still being unable to enter it only reinforces that belief. I was wondering when I would come across another one of these ultimate special areas after the pianist, and on a previously blocked path is the ultimate inventor lab. The fact it exists and that I can't enter it yet must mean Mui's going to be a part of this game for quite some time.

I ended up hanging out with Kirumi and Rantaro. They've clearly been teasing us with Rantaro knowing or being aware of a lot more than the rest of the cast, and he continues to make more allusions to being familiar with killing games/monokumas/etc... I have no theories at this point though. With a murder needing to take place by tomorrow evening, I'm assuming that there will be one the following night and today will be another day with free-time.

I did another head count in the dining hall the next day, and everyone was there. To the shock of no one, Monokuma came back and licked his "kids" with one I think licking him back. I could have gone my whole life without that scene. I guess we get an additional motive in that everyone dies if no murder in two days. That'll probably do it.

Maybe this gets better as the stakes get higher and the numbers dwindle, but I've noticed a complete lack of chemistry within the group. It may have been a long time, but I feel like even THH was better on that front at this point in the game. The characters in this game seem to be more self-involved/independent though, so maybe it won't improve that much.

With another mole/mastermind talk in the library, I am suddenly suspicious of Shu for no real reason. If he's supposed to be the #2 in this game, past #2s in previous games have been murdered (Sayaka and Nagito), murderers (Chiaki), and Kyoko, so there's precedence of not having them go all the way and even twist them a little. I noticed in the the video or whatever after the prologue that Keebo and Rantaro got top biling over Shu, so maybe there's some meaning behind that.

Each time I go back to the room, I wonder if this will be the game and night that someone will try to murder my character. While I have little faith in the writers, I think it could be an interesting development if someone unsuccessfully tried to murder the main character, and then both parties have to deal with the fallout.

Speaking of the tablet, one of the options is a rules refresher, and one said that attacking Monokuma is prohibited. I did not mention anything about a punishment though. I was at first wondering if Kaito was going to be Mukuro 2.0 when he attacked Monokuma, but when the dumb bit about the robot things attacking Monokuma instead came up, I became more suspicious of Kaito.

I try to talk to characters when given the chance. I'm sure just about everything during these travel segments is ultimately meaningless, but Kiyo did mention having a sister that he seemed to be pretty close with, so I will try and keep that in the back of my mind in terms of a possible murder motive.

Making it back to the library, Shu had discovered a hidden door behind a bookcase (how original) and suspects that one of the students is actually a mole. Only other character that I've seen in here is an out-of-place Maki, but it wouldn't be that simple. It would partially explain why Kaito did not receive any punishment earlier.

Apparently Kaede called it a day after this? All we did was meet up in the dining hall then go to library and peaced out. For someone determined to figure out a way to escape, she is quite inefficient with her time. Koki still sucks by the way.

My prayers went unheard as they made me go through the tunnels again. I made it quite a bit further this time, but again the AI decided to mass suicide, and there was nobody left to control after Koki. I'm not sure how everyone came out unscathed though given I saw them drown, burn, and electrocuted. I've noticed how Kaito is a bit too gungho defending/siding with Kaede when he wouldn't be near the top of characters I would expect to do that. I'm getting some first murderer vibes, and the reason why I suspected him as a murderer in my predicitions was because he seems so goal-oriented and that he would let nothing stand between him and them.

Back at the dorms, I don't know why they took the time to explain that you can steal and use other people's room keys. That's just how keys work. I feel like I'm going to wonder if anybody died each time after waking up. Certainly nothing bad happened during the night at this point. There needs to be a bigger push of some kind.

I went to the dining hall and immediately scoured through the still images to account for all 15 other students. I couldn't maniupulate the camera in this situation, but I found everyone except Tenko and Kiyo, though I might have seen the latter's outfit outline just peeking behind Kirumi. Sure enough, two of the first people who spoke were Kiyo and Tenko. Where was the latter hiding?

Hmm, we got our aforementioned push. No class trial for the first murder, so the first murderer can leave scot-free. I wonder how they are going to twist this since that will almost certainly not be the eventual outcome. I took a more in-depth look through the tablet earlier and saw a screen full of skills that I assume are used in the trial portion, and there were A LOT. That has to mean an increased emphasis on the trial aspect, and I can't imagine that they would remove one from the equation.

Trying to think who the major loser and the hate boner characters are, and prior to anything major happening yet, I feel like Koki is one of the two.

With everyone gathered in the gym, they finally revealed the killing game, so let's go! Oh no, I can hear another bear, and the cubs are referring to him as daddy. It's Monokuma isn't it? How swell. The rules for the killing game seem to have the basic framework of the previous games. I do wonder if the 3+ person discovery of a body before a body announcement is made was always part of it. Part of me thinks yes given Kiyotaka's death in THH. If not, I'm sure that is going to play a role in one of these murders. Probably the more important thing that stood out to me was that there are only supposed to be two survivors. Maybe it is simply a math thing like the characters pointed out, but now I'm questioning if there was a similar rule in the previous games. I'm sure that there will be more than two at the end, but maybe predicting six was a bit premature.

Before everyone submits to the game, we first must have our futile escape attempt by going through a manhole! LMAO Keebo describing his strength as being equivalent to a strong senior citizen. Definitely the best joke so far followed up by Miu using a Mondo sample line of "piece of shit"

Sending all 16 down at once into a manhole with no idea of anything sounds like a terrible idea, but kids will be kids am I right? I soon had to unexpectedly do a sidescrolling event, and boy was that a fucking disaster. Not surprisingly, the controls and physics were mediocre or bad, so that's always a blast to to struggle with. I could tell where some traps would be, but my first few attempts at jumping across them ended in disaster. When I was successful with my third character, it looked like Kaito, I had to watch in horror as the AI for the other characters proceeded to keep falling down into the water or get sorched by fire. When I succumbed to this floating object beyond the initial area, the AI was gracious enough to leave me with two remaining characters. I had 14 when I controlled Kaito, and they killed off 12!? I died to the fire with the last two.

I'm hoping and assuming that this was to be a scripted failure, hence the underbaked development of this aside, and also that I will never have to do that again.

And that means all 16 have been met with. I think that someone asked me to do this last time, so I will preemptively do it this time and predict survivors/murderers/victims. Just going off of memory and looking at character rankings, there were six survivors, four victims, one suicide, one rules violator, and three murderers in THH. There were five survivors, five victims, one suicide, and five murderers in GD.

If there are 16 in this game as well, I might do six survivors, five victims, and five murderers to keep things tidier even though that will likely not be the case. There's some slight wishful thinking here.

Tenko continues the trend of characters I have very conflicted feelings about. A bit too in your-face but her quirky side is goofy to the point of being somewhat endearing. After this I furiously tried to figure out how to trigger the next story segment. I went everywhere except where I needed to go first, so that's great.

Kiyo = Ultimate Anthropologist

He reminds me a little of Caustic from Apex Legends and seems like he would have no qualms with murder.

Going outside for the first time, we are surrounding by a giant cage. Seems totally plausible. Whatever, I guess I should speak to more people.

Gonta = Ultimate Entomologist (just what we need, a Tarzan/Mowgli substitute)

Based on first impression, I like these final four more than most of the previous people that I've met

I like how this place looks with the verdant, post-apocalyptic look, but I'm wondering if they will ultimately be a detriment to building atmosphere. For as much as I had to fault the game, THH's claustrophobic school was one of its strong suits, and the open-air, tropical setting was beneficial to GD. Perhaps once the bodies drop and the area opens up I will feel differently. I hope so anyway.

Rantaro = Ultimate ???

Great, several characters have personalities that just seem like mashups of previous characters, but now we are going through the tired route of not revealing a skill for plot convenience and manufactured mystery. Rantaro promises they aren't a bad guy completely unprompted. Sure thing pal.

Next up was a charming lass in the warehouse whose first words were, "Don't sneak up on me, bitch." Lovely. She's this game's Mondo with her small voiced lines unrelated to the dialogue on the screen when she began saying, "You mother fuc...". That was lowkey one of the best things about THH, so while I welcome it here, I wish it were by someone far less abrasive than Miu.

Miu = Ultimate Inventor

I both love and hate her, more for the latter because she seems to have some of the worst attributes of previous characters like Mikan, Hiyoko, and Toko, all characters that you can see I ranked very low.

I decided to take a look at the tablet that I was given, and of course this game would list chest measurements and toss in male measurements as well as if I am too young or dumb to not see through their ruse. WTF is EVA foam (what Tsu likes)?

Exploring the bathrooms, no comment is made on what is probably a giant two-way monitor above the bathroom stalls. There is no shame in this universe. Eager to get away from that and talk to more students, I found two in Classroom A

Keebo = Ultimate Robot
Koki = Ultimate Supreme Leader (okay)

Unlike everyone else that I've met up to this point (Kaede excluded), Keebo actually gives a positive first impression. It's too bad they made him a freaking robot, allegedly anyway.

Going down into the basement, I met a really short kid with an ill-fitting voice.

Ryoma = Ultimate Tennis

Okay, that was an unexpected title reveal. Nothing about this character makes sense lol, but at least I "know" that he's a murderer. That's, uh, reassuring I guess.

In the library was maybe the girl who was making a fuss in the gym before the reset.

Maki = Ultimate Child Caregiver

God, I would hate to see what they would have to come up with in a fourth game if this is the best they can do. I never imagined that figuring out 16 life/profession skills would be such a grueling task. especially since only a couple ever seem to be plot revelant and the rest meaningless.

We're going to do an activity later, probably murder and try to not be murdered. But first, we must go back to the beginning again with the knowledge of ultimate talents this time.

I thought Kyoko, I think that was her name, had that same title in the first game, not that there can't be multiple prodigies in the same thing at the same time (or maybe not because I know fucking nothing if there is any hardline rules/lore in the DR universe).

There was a very brief vision of possibly Kaede in some vague tech room with some tech contraption strapped to her head. I remember something of that nature was said to be what happened to the cast of DR2 and given they reset the beginning, could me thinking that one of the characters in this game had the same voice as one in the previous game actually be on the right track? Maybe I should listen closely to when the other characters speak to see if I have additional memory triggers.

I thought that I would be given a chance to explore, but I am being locked out of all the rooms that I've tried so far, including a piano lab made just for my character. I might as well talk to this character hanging out in front of this dragon statue missing a right eye. I'm over these repeated attempts to engage in conversation with her. Can we just leave and move on? She can't be worth it.

Tsu = Ultimate Cosplayer

Okay, so let me get this straight. This skill of being able to (impeccably?) dress up as fictional characters/historical people is deemed to be so worthwhile to society or whatever that it gives her exclusive privileges like voting rights and ability to run for political office? What a dystopian alternate reality for all the unintended reasons.

I didn't mean to leave the room as I was trying to get acclimated to the controls, but I guess there's this robot thing. I'm going to have to assume that this was on the other side of the door because I was confused being what appears to be outside when I regained control. I guess that I'm running. I don't recall anything like real-time escape happening in the previous two games, so I'm less getting into the moment than thinking, "Man, this is strange."

Making it to the gym, this panning shot appears to show the rest of the cast, or rather the future victims/murderers/survivors. They seem to be more aesthetically tame to the previous games, but that isn't necessarily a compliment. I consider myself to have a good memory, and one of the faceless voices I swear sounded like that sexual harrassing chef from the second game. Based on my ranking post, I would have to assume that would be Teru.

I got one of the kid's names, Rontaro. Oh no, the robots showed up saying something along the lines of bear with us. Please don't have me endure five Monokumas...damn. I'm not going to remember these names, so I might just refer to them as their colors (Mono Red, etc...).

I didn't get a good look at everyone's updated appearance, but rest assured, there will be some eye-rolling once I do. I did however see that Kaede has a musical note hairpin, so it would be safe to assume that their ultimate talent is music related.

Unlike the previous two games where I want to say the students were from Hope's Peak High, the students in this game were to comprise of the entire student body at a new school. Allegedly of course because it's hard to accept anything this series says as fact.

I can't quite recall the menu offerings from the first two games, but with having five things not unlocked from the start (I'm sure load game/continue is one given new game is an option), maybe there will be more post-game stuff here. I don't recall how/why difficulty matters in this game, but I just went with the default choices.

And here we go...dammit! Ugh amnesia. Way to kill my enthusiasm right off the bat. Well, I can only hope it was physical-trauma induced and will be resolved very soon. Anyway, unless they pull the rug out from under me, I will be a lady this game, Kaede. I'm not sure if Ultimate Revival is her title, the name of the chapter, or something else. Someone else is here in the room, Shu. He doesn't leave much of an immediate impression.

- Damn, Kaede's feisty. She's an immediate upgrade over Makoto "take the damn toolkit" Naegi. If I got that name correct, I am proud of myself.

Shu paused/hesitated talking about himself. Not sure if confidence/self-esteem related or he knows more than he's letting on. Oh neat, I can smack around objects. I'm getting these bronze coins from launching these desks and chairs into the void. I think I can have a bit of dumb fun doing this every room with an extrinsic reward attached.

I went through the first two games way back in 2015. I can't believe it has already been nearly seven years. I had planned to do this years ago, but B8 in like 2018-2020 I think had a bit of a Danganronpa binge to where there were like half a dozen or more playthrough topics regarding various games in the series, so I decided to wait it out to reduce reader burnout. I haven't seen one in a while, so now seems like a good time to get into it.

I want to be up front that I'm not a fan of the series. I'm not into anime and their thin characterization stretched to hell and back to drive along their contrived melodrama and ridiculous stories. That being said, the premise of things like this and (the vastly superior) Zero Escape will always suck me in, and I love the frame of mind they put me in. I'm willing to take all the bad that goes along with it just for the moments that make it all worth it. I will enjoy roasting all the characters and their idiocy leading to preventable delimmas or even deaths.

I will begin later on tonight assuming that I already have it installed. Maybe I should check that now.

Oh, and I should say that I will not spoiler tag anything regarding this or any previous DR games that I have played, should the situation arise and I remember stuff. If I reference another unrelated work, then I will give warning and spoiler tag.

I will reiterate what I said in a previous topic that Flores was abysmal at assembling and retaining a quality coaching staff. Whether it remains to be seen how McDaniel fares, he appears to me to have done a much better job with his initial coaching staff as he has a clear vision in mind.
