When he was awoken, he saw that Amalthus hated the world, so he felt his purpose for being awakened by him was to destroy the world. It ended up becoming instinct and over hundreds of years after being defeated by the other Aegis (Mythra) he developed human emotion and wondered if it really was his purpose in life.
