You get this effect even without such a big fidelity leap - some of Yakuza Kiwami's animations are unintentionally hilarious.

While graphics have definitely improved a lot, the biggest leap between now and the PS3 era is absolutely in animation. Stuff from the late PS4 era to today can look so fantastic in motion and it's a clear order of operation above what even the best PS3 games or even early PS4 games were able to do.

Season 3 was a mixed bag but Season 4 IMO was an extremely good ending.

Twitter was my last holdout and I left pretty early into the Musk era. I liked using it to follow artists but even then the algorithms were still bombarding me with so much negativity and stories of hatred and violence that my mental health was firmly in the shitter. I've been much happier since leaving but in ways feel like I'm still recovering.

Never used TikTok but it strikes me as an actual poison in society. I definitely agree that we're going to look back on this whole era as a massive mistake that psychologically fucked up an entire generation.

The quantity of caves is probably about as it needs to be to make them easily and frequently discoverable. I hit the end of the bubbulgem rewards just a little bit before being finished with all the story stuff before the final boss and when he said he needed the remaining 100-however-many, I just said "lol yep, not doing that."

I think it's fine that there's content in the game that's ignorable. Even armor upgrades you 1000% don't need to go beyond like, level 3 at the absolute max no matter what you're doing. It's all just extra fluff that leads to a smoother experience if you're playing organically. It does suck that it ends up feeling like a compulsion for some people and probably makes the game less enjoyable as a result, but that compulsion sucks in most games so having a game this big kind of on-ramping someone to building up a tolerance to it feels like a good thing to me.

Limited Run Games has really leveled up, huh? Went from basically just doing niche special editions for old games to now being a notable publishing house and having an in-house engine specifically for preserving these retro treasures - pretty awesome to see!

The FTC bungled this hardcore. It basically came across like they were specifically lobbying for Sony, poor self-serving arguments and all. Even if their lawyers don't understand the space and wanted expert insight, they really screwed up by going so all in on one source who honestly doesn't have a very compelling case here.

This feels like such a cheesy thing to say, but this game is it. After a ton of false starts over the years since my youth when I actually cared about fighting games (but was never actually good at them) this is the game to legitimately suck me in to the point that I'm actually really learning the game. I have a blast every time I'm playing it and very often when I'm not playing, I'm thinking of new stuff to try out that I actually do successfully incorporate into my play the next time I sit down.

The systems are just so damn good, it feels so great to play and there's an abundance of support in the game itself (what a concept) to give you a strong foundation and provide multiple roads for people to actually start to dig into the game. For so long fighting games have struggled with expanding their audience but this feels like the first one to actually successfully lay down an on-ramp for people who are interested in it.

I think Squeenix (and all the other major Japanese devs) are happy with the massive overseas numbers they're consistently enjoying

Steam Deck is pretty easy to get mods up on, or whatever else you might want to do with it. Worth pointing out that it's also the best portable emulation device ever created, and you can even get/use the dock for easy emulation on your TV!

Based on her design she appears to be a practitioner of Dokushu Kenpo, of which F.A.N.G. was previously stated to be the only living user, and he had a separate comic thingy set after SFV where he takes in a girl as his apprentice.

I knew I forgot one! Seth does feel like they barely count considering what a huge transformation they had in 5 but I'd definitely love to see that version of the character continue forward.

It's kinda wild how this first season already has two rescues from SFV (plus A.K.I. as a likely successor to F.A.N.G.) compared to how much of a wet fart SF4 has proven to be as introducing recurring characters goes, outside of Juri who's been an absolute runaway success to the point of being on the base roster here. I guess they do at least get points for the playable debut of Poison, and I'd love to see C. Viper and Hakan get brought back some day.

Voices sound great! I honestly wasn't too worried after seeing the cast list but it's always good to actually hear it. The current generation of English VAs is just ridiculously solid all around.

The end of Evo is in late summer so honestly by then it wouldn't be unreasonable to have at least a teaser of A.K.I. in addition to whatever outfits/stages/whatever they're going to roll out.

Sure seems like Rashid is coming this month - that's a very happy surprise since I'd been assuming they weren't going to drop him until likely the night the Evo wrapped.

I gotta agree with that overall assessment of FF7's combat system. It feels really open-ended but very few decisions matter at all and its character differences are almost boiled down to nothing more than animation/limit sets. Innate stats outside of Aerith (lol) are almost down to FF14 racial bonus levels of insignificance.

FF7R by contrast has not only a much more impactful materia system, but the excellent weapon system that meaningfully shapes characters, who themselves already have unique kits that set them apart from one another. The end result is much deeper and richer party-based gameplay compared to the OG.

It's gotta be Sw/Sh. I remember so many people getting excited about the "first mainline Pokemon on a home console" who were daydreaming about the huge leap it would take only for it to actually be worse production-wise than the handheld games that preceded it.

SV is a technical disaster but they were obviously at least attempting something bold.

Played this for the first time about a year ago on RPCS3 at 60 fps and it was an experience. Yasha is the absolute best, what a hero - and his theme is amazing as well!

600 tweets gets hit way faster than you'd think, you'd easily hit it with even extremely modest browsing. And it's not "to stop companies from selling data," it's literally because Elon isn't paying his bills from Google.

I left Twitter a couple of months ago and the effect on my mental health has been fantastic. The speed at which it was degrading was incredible and it somehow seems like it's accelerating even further. Between the death of embeds yesterday and this unmitigated disaster today I'm wondering if/hoping that they might be entering a true death spiral.

Notably haven't played FF16 but TotK is an absolute triumph and will likely take the year for me.

Absolutely insane year so far with a stunning amount still to come. Basically every genre has at least one fantastic thing this year and some genres are just straight up feasting after a stretch of famine. Definitely feels like we're finally "back" after how much COVID fucked everything up.

So sorry to hear this - went through it myself 5ish years ago (cat was even the same age) and it was one of the most emotional experiences of my life. The pain and misery goes away it definitely takes time. Cats don't get to be that old without being loved so at least know that she was happy with you.

Slower month for me, which is great cause I'll have some time to finish up the stuff that was completely displaced by Tears of the Kingdom before everything heats up again from August onward.

Considering this is an Anime Expo panel I'm going to go ahead and assume they're not going to be dropping any notable announcements here. I guess that has happened in the past for other stuff (I was there for the Zero Time Dilemma reveal and legit couldn't believe what was happening) but I don't know that Bamco has any history of showing notable stuff there. On a related note though, whatever you want to say about console physical releases, I'm flabbergasted that PC physical releases are still a thing at all, extremely limited or not. Haven't had a machine that even included a disc drive for at least 15 years. It does make me a bit nostalgic for the days where PC physical releases were comically huge boxes that folded outward with artwork, screenshots and the like. They would basically bake an entire marketing campaign into those things so you knew exactly what you were getting when you picked it up at the store. Pretty sure I still have my original Half-Life boxes tucked away in storage.

"Availability" is kind of a laugh since the used retro game market is such a complete shitshow these days. All those gems from 20+ years ago will cost you an arm and a leg each if you didn't get them when the getting was good. Meanwhile literally every game ever is available digital through some means, even if companies are typically terrible about preserving availability of their own software.

You were almost there - DI absorbs two hits and breaks on the third. But yeah, countering with your own DI is the strongest option and shuts them down ridiculously fast since it gives you a full combo as a punish. If you're fighting a spammer and have your punishes down, they're out of the game after just a couple of those.
