Psychological torture isn't part of the animal kingdom or strictly necessary for Pennywise's survival, but he clearly loves tormenting children before he eats them. I don't buy the "animal" excuse wholesale for either of these but Dracula is far more sympathetic and has much more "man" to go with his monster while Pennywise is actually just a monster.

Definitely a bummer to see it so clearly demonstrated that just backing really fucking cool and original stuff isn't enough to cut it in the industry, even with a portfolio as rock-solid as theirs. But I do agree with Snake that I found it weird to find out that they're losing so much on so many movies when their budgets are (usually) comparatively miniscule while consistently getting a pretty good amount of attention - even from the mainstream, pretty often!

Realistically you're more likely to get a noticeable amount of input lag from the actual hardware you're using to play the game than from a display these days as long as you're shopping with that in mind. PS5 is especially rough in that department, fighting games immediately feel notably different/more sluggish on that than they do on PC with an appropriate monitor.

This was the case for a long time but has been solved by Sinden.

There's merit to CRTs in that they're truly lagless and pixel art/sprites straight up not translating to modern displays well at all, but both of those advantages are vanishing between really good filters being developed and input lag creeping down below human perceptibility on better TVs these days. (Monitors have been there for quite some time.)

Chocobo breeding sucks but yeah the speed ups we have available now strip it down enough that it can actually be mostly fun. Definitely would recommend using a guide so not to waste time, though.

Nothing for the gatling guns - biggest nerfs were for the Zimms and Stun Needle. A few smaller nerfs and then a *ton* of buffs. Most easily readable version of the detailed changes that I've seen is here:

Pretty great patch, actually! Zimm nerfs were pretty badly needed and lots of stuff got some really great and cool buffs.

The GTA comparison never made a lick of sense seeing as you can't walk up and punch/kill any random person on the street or drive cars and those are the only things anyone playing GTA cared about back then. Really they have almost nothing at all in common besides both being set in cities and having crime as a focus of the narrative.

For those of you who got into Yakuza before Y0 which is one of the more popular entry points, what actually made you check out the series?

Started a little while before Y5's localization was announced (felt like a miracle at the time - how far we've come) thanks to HyperBitHero's "Your Next Favorite" vid on the series. After watching I didn't understand how something that looked so wildly cool wasn't more popular - glad that's so thoroughly turned around now!

Yeah I also think 6 is going to look better in the long view but it's still kind of a bummer that they bungled what they were trying to do with that one the first time. It retroactively set up for the intrigue we've got going into the next couple of games I suppose but it still feels like it would have been better had they just stuck it the first time.

0 = Judgment > 5 > Lost Judgment > K2 > 7 > 4 > K1 > 3 > 6 > 2 > 1

Quality gaps are > K2 and > K1, but these are all good games IMO even if there's basically no reason at all to go back to vanilla 1 or 2.

I'm honestly not sure I've ever typed out a full series ranking but this looks right. 7 is an incredible proof of concept but the RPG gameplay/systems really show that they've never done this style before. Story is among the top tier and I'm expecting great things from Infinite Wealth.

Jane Doe hits one of my absolute favorite patterns in horror that I most commonly attribute to The Descent: ratcheting the tension higher and higher until things feel as bad and fucked up as they can possibly get, only to truly horrify you with the revelation that you're not even halfway through the spectrum of horror it has ready for you. The "shit hits the fan" moment of Jane Doe is so perfect that you can practically feel the story flipping the switch into full-blown nightmare territory.

I found Yuffie in general not that fun to use. Got used to her a bit by the end but she was a marked step down from the playable characters in the main game.

Man this is a really interesting take, lol. Yuffie is mechanically so vastly superior to the entire party of the base game that I was initially wondering how she was going to incorporate into Rebirth without rendering the rest of the party completely useless.

WW84 is somehow actually that bad and like others in here, I'm saying this as a horror fan who's seen some absolute dreck in my day.

Whatever Taura's next game is will be absolutely make or break for Platinum at this point, I feel. He's the only superstar they have left and if it turns out even he can't make a game of quality under whatever shitshow the company has morphed into then that's pretty much curtains.

Bummer that we'll probably never see whatever Project GG was going to be - Kamiya's other superhero games were both extraordinary.

Dragon's Dogma 2 looks like exactly what I hoped it would be - Dragon's Dogma 1 with more time and budget. Hurray! Mystic Spearhand already looks like a class I'd love to play.

Howlongtobeat says somewhere between 11 and 19 hours depending on how much side stuff you do and that lines up pretty well with my experience. I'm replaying it now, my first run clocked in at 15 hours with no dlc and maybe 70% of the sidequests. My replay's already past that length with three chapters to go but I just finished AWE so that added a good chunk of time that wasn't there before.

All digital, haven't bought anything physical for something like 10 years.

Definitely recognize that it's not as appealing on console since you're just playing by a single storefronts rules and you're not likely to see sales on new games but on PC it's all positives unless you sell your games when you're done, which I never do.

Physical discs are just DRM for fully HDD/SSD installed games at this point so it all feels really silly to me now.

Realistically the runtime fee is probably going to hit the max of 4% for a ton of people so this ends up looking pretty identical to the flat rate standard set by Unreal - just reached through a bunch of stupid backpedaling after loosing a completely needless PR disaster that literally anyone outside the C-suite would've known was going to be horrible.

The retroactive stuff is still really stupid and definitely feels like it exposes them to a bunch of unwanted legal attention - especially in Europe - so if they don't walk that back as well that'll really be something.

I would definitely argue Sakuraba isn't as impactful as he used to be, but like, look at the man's output. He's basically been in the composer slave mines for decades, that'd take the edge from anyone. And even with that said he still puts out some legit great stuff (Velvet's Theme) that make you stand up and take notice. Taking his whole career writ large he's absolutely one of the greats.

So uh, apparently the fan translation of Fate/Extra CCC just hit 81% and the group is looking like they're actually going to successfully finish it?

Would be absolutely nuts to have that game playable in English after all this time and all the failed attempts to translate it. Legit was starting to think a sequel to the already borderline vaporware remake would be our best shot at ever experiencing this story.

Advent Children is worth watching - does feel 50/50 if you'll actually enjoy it but it's just a movie so it's not like you've lost much time either way. Crisis Core is good and worth playing. Dirge of Cerberus... maybe not so much, but it also has the least relevance to what's going on in the new stuff and for now just provides some additional context to characters who may seem a bit random otherwise.

FGO global stubbornly staying 2 years behind the JP release was both the best and worst thing for me when I was playing. Made it impossible to get excited about any announcements and dodging spoilers was hell but also I legit can't fathom how miserable the gacha is without having two years of foresight to help you plan. Even with that it was absolute suffering having to just not even try for so many servants I really wanted because I knew my odds of the *must-haves* was nonexistent otherwise.

If we're truly blessed then FGO will die within our lifetimes and it'll be repackaged into something besides the absolute worst medium possible for a story of the calibur it (eventually) has.

Nah the way it is is actually perfect IMO. FF7R is maybe the most compelling case for an actual evolution for turn based gameplay with its hybrid approach. People get stuck though and don't realize this actually is still a turn based game and that you're supposed to be constantly swapping characters to take your "turns."

To hear people talk about it FF16 sounds like Berserk with FF14 writing, DMC gameplay and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm boss fights which is to say I'm going to absolutely fucking eat it up when I finally get to play it, but I can definitely see why some JRPG community feathers might get ruffled by it. Don't know if that community's collective heart would be able to take it if Dragon Quest 12 ended up also being a big shift, so I'll hope for their sake that it keeps the faith!

To all the folks who keep saying Nomura is the source of all the weird fuckery in FF7R (which ngl I actually enjoy,) it's been stated before that Nomura and Hamaguchi were both advocates for FF7R being a more faithful remake but the newer blood pushed to spice things up, and they ended up loving the idea.

I know people love to just NOMURA BAD whenever plot stuff gets a little too kooky but he's not remotely as influential on a lot of the stuff people give him flak for recently as people would seem to like to believe. (Like for example he also barely had anything to do with Stranger of Paradise's plot - which also kicks ass btw - beyond the barest and vaguest concept of the story)

It adds enormously to it, yes. I'd honestly say it's chiefly written and designed with the expectation that you've played the original as a starting point.

Honestly a tie between Ace Attorney and Umineko. Both absolutely fantastic experiences and it probably would've been many years before either one would catch on enough to get on my radar back then. Most of the other big B8 games like Persona, Trails and Outer Wilds I either tripped on myself or was led to by other influences.
