I'll answer purely on your Ray Stevenson comment... basically copying Leon.

Ray Stevenson is the start of the show. He was an unknown to me I've absolutely been loving his portrayal here, I really wasn't expecting such an interesting character out of him and finishing the show made me deeply sad to lose him as an actor.

As for Clone Wars / Rebels... there's maybe like 3 key details that could help or provide an impact to the series (not that that's the extent of references, but meaningful things to understand). Basically the concept of who exactly Ahsoka is which you may or may not already know, the ending scene of Rebels (what it means for where Ezra & Thrawn are), and maaaybe the Clone Wars Mortis arc although that last one isn't the most direct relevance bit at least of yet.

Definitely one more thing I can think of but that's probably a bit more work to contextualize and I mean it wouldn't really be that out-of-place to witness it for the first time through the Ahsoka series. It calls back to Rebel's incredible season 2 finale though... but watching that wouldn't be enough which is what I mean by "more work". It's probably more of a reason to be interested in Rebels than something actually needed to understand Ahsoka. Actually this goes for the Mortis bit too.

Also if you like Thrawn in Rebels clips, he's very much the exact same as Rebels portrayed him

plugged into Live2D and the pieces are working out it so far... tricky though with the dynamic shadows on layers that also have static ones (head has hair shadow plus general rim shade)

with L2D you can either use a mask or an inverted mask and they each have a use with shading:

• with dynamic shadows that means letting you control a shadow's movement so long as you have the shadow, line, and base colour all separate and you can MASK the shadow to the base so when the shadow moves off a face it doesn't bleed past your lineart
• however, hair shadow should move as the hair moves - but shading of the face's contours moves as the head moves. to make this easier you need to separate the two shading layers but then the problem is overlap causng additive shadows at their intersection. solving THIS you use INVERTED MASK so that when on shadow intersects with another it is masked out

however, on one mesh you can't tell L2D to Mask these and Invert Mask these which so you can't just simply mask both shading layers to the base colour then also invert mask one shading layer from the other. that would be super easy & cool

the Dynamic layer needs to be masked, no getting around that, so the solution is to ensure the contour shading doesn't exceed the lineart manually, so then you can apply an inverted mask on that layer, telling it not to intersect with the dynamic layer

it's frustrating but not too bad, I have it set up for the face (use dynamic hair shadow) & thighs (uses dynamic skirt shadow), but less-visible there's still a dynamic shadow on the tummy (coming from the shirt) I have to deal with tomorrow

anyways the latest show yeah massive departure but reasonably legit cartoon in its own right - it's just not what I want from the he-man series even though I can appreciate the references & reimaginings it made. I wouldn't question anyone's taste for preferring it it to the classic shows which being honest aren't exactly the greatest media anyways, but the classic ones have a charm that appeal to my millennial-ass sensibilities and I was legit impressed with the first series while enjoying how original She-Ra connected to it.

it's mostly a whatever kids show I just have on in the background and don't really pay attention to. like I said it's realllllly the biggest leap into reimagining this franchise has ever seen, I'm including New Adventures in that.... but it's not in a bad way, it just feels like a completely different show. Turning He-Man more into a power rangers kinda team where everyone is rather equal. Teela & Man-at-Arms are really only the same characters by name and nothing else - okay Teela is kept as a Sorceress doing magic, BUT MAN-AT-ARMS IS A FELLOW CHILD WTF

but so long as you accept that this is a completely different thing, well it's a generic kids show just as the best He-Man shows before it. I can't say the lore interests me as much, I have grown an attachment to the basic He-Man story... but the way s2 ended with Ram Ma'am (btw a fucking hilarious name I love) is actually pretty interesting and makes me wanna rewatch this season with more attention. After I finish maybe, it was only 8 episodes after all.

doesn't look like much if I only show one model with everything so I split into two to demonstrate super saiyan version along with the actual riggable mouth/lips (and all mouth parts you can't see). mouth on the left is just the shape to morph it to in live2d but it's best to start out with straight lines on the right (also with layer separations that ready so it's lip line -> lip stick -> lip skin that covers the mouth/tongue/teeth parts)

flicked off optional stuff on the right because well why not

when flicking off the armour plate, since the lil dillo insignia isn't baked in it's on its own layer that part stayed on top of the skin/booba and it actually got me interested in using it as a tattoo maybe. might play around with it tomorrow

After giving up on TemTem, I started up Coromon since it was only $8. I'm liking it much better. The sprite work in battles is really nice. The difficulty has so far felt fair and not bullshit (admittedly I'm playing with the "restore HP/SP on level up" option). The monster designs are largely pretty cool. It's got proper dungeons with puzzles, and instead of gyms there are actual boss fights. I lost against the first boss on my first try, but then I just switched up a couple movesets and got it. I'm only in the town with the second boss now, so I can't comment too much on story yet.

i just finished today's star wars finale so

Not so much I feel, but the big setup mystery is certainly being left for a season 2 to discover. Which I'm pretty okay with because the focus on the A-plot was very deserved, the other thing really can't be addressed that much at this point yet - I feel the visual of the Mortis gods mountain really does say all we needed to know there.

Ezra building a new lightsaber and talking about Kanan with Huyang was great, and Ahsoka telling Sabine that she intends to be there for her like Anakin was. I really wasn't expecting the upgrade to Elsbeth to be the season boss (well until the title popped up and that clicked) and she did it well. Magic saber was sick, realizing the true nature of the zombie Night Troopers was great validation of the relatively small troop because of how it got back real when they got up, it certainly worked as the delay Thrawn needed - only complaint is the blaster doors being INCREDIBLY convenient and really make you question why tf they don't start out closed to block the Jedi's way in the first place.

Also awesome seeing the super strong troopers putting up a good fight to Ezra & Sabine. Obviously knew Thrawn was going to get away but wasn't expecating Ezra to make it home which is pretty poetic - happy for him, would've been sad to get left behind after he was so excited to get back and now he gets to meet home with Hera (tho dude... why did you keep your helmet on).

Wonderful finale for me, but really sad this is the last we'll see of Ray Stevenson who did a phenomenal job this series. Character 100% has to be recast, there's no other way.

the show ends up doing what it should have, leaning on Teela's lineage as a Sorceress... but it hasn't had any dramatic focus in the show at all, it's only cluing into it in the 3rd last episode as it ends with "oh I think I've always known, okay i'm magic i can fight ultimate sorceress evil lyn" and it's so bizarre when the show opened up with her hating magic, hating secrets, but then she just completely flips to easily accepting this revelation because it's time to end the show

Sorceress Teela's pretty cool at the end, but I wish the show was actually *about* her becoming this instead of it being such a last-minute realization & development. It'd be like Adora finding the Sword of Protection in the penultimate and finally appearing as She-Ra for the first time to defeat Horde Prime halfway into the season 1 finale

Andra becoming the new Man-At-Arms? what? she was literally just accepted as a citizen like a day ago, I've liked the character but I'm really never a fan of speedrunning major developments like this

also greatly confused by He-Man fighting Skelator while Teela fights Evil Lyn...... because He-Man granted Skelator these powers to help fight Evil Lyn.... if they're not doing that, surely He-Man can just depower him now so wtf is this for. it's so wild going from such a character-driven show like She-Ra that built up a strong varied cast in its first 13 episode series

To this piece of junk that entirely relies on the property it's based on to shortcut their characters into significance and fails miserably because they don't at all feel like the same characters. like Evil Lyn & Orko try to have this deep meaningful conversation of personal growth but the show hasn't actually put any work into these characters yet, it's relying entirely on you carrying about previous incarnations who were completely different and the characters never had this kind of relationship in the first place. it's just supposed to be like "oh they're so much older and mature now!" but you can't just fastforward the growth and expect me to care

Andra's at least a likeable new character that I've gotten to grow to like (not to any degree of the season 1 she-ra characters), but there's been a bunch of one-offs like He-Ro that had absolute no effort into him other than knowing "hey his name is like he-man that's some deep mythology!"

although this show reallllly isn't good so far, so thankfully it's only 10. it's so bizarre, it hinges on knowing He-Man because the setup is like a conclusion of the series where He-Man defeats Skelator but they both die. But oh my god if you've enjoyed He-Man you'll hate the direction the characterizations it turns to. I was kinda interested in the first 20 minutes but then the last 5 minutes is full of King Randall & Teela being gigantic whiny pricks, Man-At-Arms gets fired and Teela calls everyone assholes and leaves and that's the setup - Teela now being a rogue mercenary and it's just SOOO out of character

a Teela focused show could've been right up my alley, the best He-Man plots are around her story with Sorceress. but this show just immediately leaps into making her into some completely unlikable idiotic asshole so it's not even Teela, it just feels like some generic tryhard schlock inexplicably themed as the He-Man universe

also Snake Mountain and the old baddies have turn into this freaky science-magic cult and it's like what in the actual fuck?

but man, the HOW COULD YOU KEEP SECRETS FROM ME trope is my biggest pet peve in superhero media and that's the entire basis of this show

sums up the final season quite well, got me again in the finale no surprise

this one really did live up to the hype, and considering again that I watched now 379 episodes in the franchise to get here that's a good feeling and by no means was it a guarantee given how I came out not that impressed by Avatar

I already raved about season 3 being the possibly my fav 6-ep series but I might prefer this final one overall for delivering the feels I've been waiting for. I basically queued this up following the Korra disappointment that Korrasami didn't get any build-up to it but not here, the relationship of Adora & Catra has been center-stage from season 1 and this final season is fully cashing in that pay-off.

Relationships all around have been pretty greatly matched which I think is a rarity, if I'd call-out one it'd be Glimmer & Bow at the end there. Glimmer's definitely been jealous of Bow since season 1 but going the other way not so much, and this final season he was just getting over how pissed he was about her season 4 actions. But it didn't really take away from the characters so it doesn't bother me. I've had my problems with Glimmer but this season does her better, 4 was just a reaaaal ass low-point for the character.

damn I really wish I could have more of this show, yeah it does tie up all big plots but dammit I need continuation! they tease about having another adventure at the end, just do it! I've mentioned before it's a bit of a shame the He-Man side of the franchise is completely removed which is pretty undeniable when it's explained that magic has left the known universe which would cause problems for Skelator, Orko, and well He-Man having the same powers as She-Ra. Not to mention Horde Prime's weakness being magic would put a dent into Hordak being Skelator's mentor lol. Still, there's more places She-Ra could explore! But yeah-yeah then you don't end on such a climactic season as this one was I get it.

also I never really touched on it enough but they went a pretty interesting way with Shadow Weaver throughout the whole show, not really evil but certainly questionable trust where sometimes you think she's valid and sometimes it feels like an ulterior motive. Classic series she's just the top henchman who honestly comes off as more evil than Hordak, but hey in this show also Hordak isn't really either as much as he has an inferiority complex he's hyperfocused on making up for, partly in the way Entrapta hyperfocuses in her research to the point she doesn't consider the negative consequences

anyhow up next is the Masters of the Universe Revelation for a very short 10 episode stint and then completing the franchise with 3 short seasons of He-Man 2021!

season rankings... 5 > 3 >> 1 > 2 >> 4

5 & 3 are GOAT tier seasons, 1 & 2 are above average entertainment, 4 is fine

s4 down, not as tight as the third, lacking in Catra who's kinda just stuck in despair, the Heart of Etheria plot's pretty convoluted. like the only thing that was stopping this from happening before was Scorpia's crystal? why wasn't the world balanced in Mara's age? it sucks that in order to save the planet the princesses have to be incomplete. also the whole First Ones backstory for She-Ra to be a part of the weapon kinda puts an end to canonizing Eternia which is sad after watching so many episodes of this franchise

also Glimmer really sucks, she's always had her problems but I've tried overlooking it but now her behaviour as queen has just been nutso. she's really the antagonist of this season

still hype to see how season 5 finishes things, cool to end it off with Horde Prime, as Hordak while still an interesting character has certainly been defanged as a baddie

I've never really gotten to expansions yet my self but XIV definitely has lots of players here, even among people who typically steer from MMOs. I'd definitely be thinking Alphinaud tho.

XI on the other hand no, I've seen polls with one person other than me voting that they played XI but I haven't identified who that other vote is. but Shantotto at least has appearances in crossovers so there's that, even though I find her choice as the XI rep baffling

almost ended up finishing s3 before falling asleep because damn it's good and I was having trouble disengaging enough to drift off until sleep finally overcame approaching 6am

I said earlier how season 1 revitalized my expectations of a 13-ep series, and well this season here is possibly the best I've ever seen a 6-ep season accomplish. I mean MCU has certainly shown the limitations of the format but this was top-form She-Ra, real surprising after the previous season kinda did live up to the expectation of a mini-season that couldn't focus so much on a main plot but this one absolutely did and it was a real tight ride. Catradora continues to be incredible, portal plot is hype although it hasn't yet touched on Eternia (Horde Prime tho!), revealing Hordak's vulnerability and connecting that with the revelation of prime is pretty perfect and man evil definitely isn't the word for Entrapta with how well she supports all parties. Also very deserved redemption for Angella who's absolutely been pretty incompetent a queen til now so it really worked for her standing up to save the day.

it's kinda wild what this show's accomplished in 13 episodes, like I am coming off of 327 episodes across 4 other series in this franchise but in these 13 episodes. In He-Man I've been pretty fond of Adam, Teela, Sorceress, and Man-at-Arms, but this show has really made its supporting cast really pop, as well as fostering a great protag-antag relationship between Andora & Catra

also worth pointing out that the original She-Ra series I felt was pretty weak in this regard, I never really cared about its cast as much as He-Man's stars, and in particular Hordak was just an absolute joke of an antagonist, and not in the entertaining Skelator way. he's not fantastic by any means, that's what Catra's here for, but for a first season he's kept an authoritative position

and sure you can say 13 episode show you can expect a tight focus compared to the long hauls of the other series... but I proceeded those shows with Legend of Korra, four 13-ep seasons that honestly collapsed my expectations of what a 13-episode series could do, feeling that show could've really used the length of Avatar to really build its plot & cast up but now here's She-Ra doing it

also lmao Entrapta really went full-blown evil at the drop of a hat, like yeah she was already shown to disregard the consequences of her research from her introduction but damn girl you really don't care

hope She-Ra's connection to He-Man / Ethernia is touched on at some point, it' a bit of a strange mystery that seems untouched about Adora's origins and where she was kidnapped from but I guess this season's already had a lot to explore. I don't need the show to crossover or anything but like c'mon girl you transform by saying For the Honor of Greyskull, you gotta find out what that even is, and the story

one thing I really liked about the original She-Ra was her origins plot movie and the way Adora had to deal with learning about the Horde, being told by He-Man, then exploring the world on her own to see what the Horde is really like. and it really is a whole further layer Hordak kidnapped her that I feel isn't touched on too strongly here beyond the early matter of fact mention without deeper exploration yet

damn tho next two seasons are only 7 & 6 episodes long how tf this gonna work out

ep1 of She-Ra 2018 down and oh wow yeah this is very different

still not New Adventures of He-Man level of different, but lore-wise some pretty big immediate changes, and characters babbied (well, they might actually be the same ages so then it would actually mean they act their ages more)

although Bow was definitely more of an older man in the original, surely, he had that mustache!

Catra not being an explicitly evil person with an eternal hissing voice, actually more of a bro now. She-Ra herself her story seems pretty detached from its He-Ra origins now, instead of Sorceress sending He-Man to unlock her powers, both characters are completely uninvolved and finding the sword jumps She-Ra immediately to finding Light Hope, bypassing Sorceress's role altogether. First episode though and there was the flash of She-Ra being taken as a baby so I still gotta see the explanation.

Glimmer is also a much louder personality this time, originally she certainly had her brattiness, mostly towards the end. New version though's definitely ramped up.

but then biggest change oh wow Glimmer & Bow witness her first transformation!

interesting how they handle Catra, she's still not completely evil, but she knows what the Horde is doing and she very much has the mindset of someone who's brought up under the Horde's environment, thinking she can work her way to the top and be the one in charge

It's been p good for the most part, definitely validates my need to watch everything prior because it's for sure been a help making scenes and characters more interesting to see either remade or expanded further. Sorceress stuff is a highlight.

Shame Queen Marlena is kinda tossed to the side, I miss the original story beats about her being from Earth as an accomplished NASA pilot. Also kinda lame addition of the King Greyskull plotline, turning He-Man & Teela into a rather Link & Zelda historical reincarnation bit. Original it was supposedly that other He-Man predecessors random people which helped the fact nobody would think about Adam because it wouldn't be a common thing for royalty to become He-Man - but this new lore explicitly states Adam as a descendant of King Greyskull. Also kinda ick that King Greyskull was a previous Sorceress's husband, as Sorceresses have so far always been shown to be a direct lineage, so now Adam is a decendant of Greyskulll and Teela is a descendant of Sorceress... anyways that's just a couple things that are pretty eh

oh yeah does Cringer or Battlecat even speak anymore I can't even remember

oh #2: King Hiss & the Snake Men suck. they were fine the first time as a nice break from an overreliance on Skelator, and even their second encounter I didn't have a issue with, but now ending the series I just want Skelator. also lol really they did a good Evil Lyn betrayal plot but then Skelator just takes her back so long as Evil Lyn promises not to do it again... and the season ends with her doing it again to summon Hordak, who's also been teased so long with no pay-off. c'mon now.

anyways up next is finally the series I started this for: jumping to She-Ra 2018!

day 1 progress, tapped out for sleep now. like I said this is the design that I've loved the concept the most for, but I really feel I botched in the end so I'm excited for a do-over to get it right and change some things. improvements looking good so far!
