That's a position that can potentially be applied to any crime, but I feel that it's very important to make a distinction between not having something haunt you forever and never having to take responsibility for it. Anyone who assaults anyone else should face the consequences for doing so. Ideally, that'll happen immediately, but if it doesn't, it's fair game to apply those consequences later, even if that will jeopardize their career (especially so in the case of somebody as influential as a supreme court judge). That's also not to say the only way to take responsibility for a crime is to go to jail for it. If somebody who committed an assault then proceeded to support the victim through the recovery process, or otherwise right the wrong and earn forgiveness, pressing charges and seeking jail time years after that sequence of events would be unreasonable. But you have to do something. Nobody should expect to be forgiven for a crime unless they've genuinely worked to earn that forgiveness. |

SmokeMassTree posted... Topic | Switch > PC |
_AdjI_ 09/22/18 11:24:17 AM #134 | DPsx7 posted... It kind of is because as you keep changing the hardware and OS, your old games break. Which is no less true of consoles. If you replace an N64 with a Gamecube, you won't be able to play your N64 games. If you want to be able to play games that rely on old hardware, don't change your hardware. That applies equally to PC's and consoles, though even then consoles are the worse offenders because PC hardware changes often don't introduce issues (especially these days; anything back to about Windows XP is usually compatible with modern systems). DPsx7 posted... As for the second point it's not that simple. We haven't lost paid content but have lost free content and the point I'm making is they have the ability to - it COULD happen. Sure, it could happen. Valve could, on a whim, decide to revoke 67 million users' libraries entirely. Presuming that each of those users has spent an average of $100 (which is probably actually a pretty conservative estimate), though, they'd then be staring a $6.7 billion class action lawsuit in the face. There's a good chance they'd win, since the EULA does legally permit them to revoke access to people's games for any reason (which is no less true of physical games), but that'd be an awfully expensive lawsuit to fight, and when the dust had settled they'd never make another cent because nobody would trust them. Could they? Sure. But will they? Almost certainly not, and citing that possibility as a reason to steer clear of Steam and digital sales entirely is ridiculously paranoid. DPsx7 posted... They claim to but they probably don't know what they're doing. You don't really need a lot of expertise to be able to answer the questions "am I playing this game?" and "am I connected to the Internet?". The idea that the people who are able to get Steam working offline are the ones that *don't* know what they're doing is kind of funny. Do I doubt that you couldn't get it to work in 2006? No, actually. Do I think you're a fool for insisting that it still won't work despite over a decade of updates to the platform and dozens of people telling you that it does? Absolutely. |

They had a big surge in popularity as they basically brought point-and-click adventure games back into mainstream spotlight and had a couple of major hits, but that novelty has long since faded, and they're very much a one-trick pony as far as genres go. Toss in that their big schtick has been to make games around established IP's, which requires them to purchase expensive licenses, and I can see how they ran into problems. |

_AdjI_ 09/21/18 10:02:25 AM #100 | DPsx7 posted... once you buy a console it doesn't go bad. It still plays games years later. That's no less true of PC's, especially now that consoles predominantly have optical and hard drives (and therefore moving parts that can fail) instead of being solid state. Hardware wears out, but until it does, it'll keep playing games, no matter what sort of system it is. DPsx7 posted... And the games WILL work, none of this messing with compatibility crap like PC has. It's very rare to have compatibility issues with any game made for an OS later than Windows 98. Certainly, XP onward tends to work with no hassle, and even older stuff can be playable with a little fiddling. Meanwhile, no amount of (legal) fiddling will allow me to play a GC game on my Switch (short of buying a port that they release). There's no messing with compatibility with consoles because there's no compatibility to mess with. Comparing console backwards compatibility to PC is laughable. |

Yay! Personal growth! Kyuubi4269 posted... And a dice roll is 50/50, you either win or you lose. If you think that making more than Sunny makes you more credible than him, then you must also think that anyone who makes more than you is more credible than you. If you do not, then you are picking and choosing when logic is applicable, and you just can't do that. Again, you'd have a much easier time of this if you just admitted that what you said was idiotic and apologized. At this point, you're getting worse than ErikP, and that's never a good thing. Kyuubi4269 posted... My job produces a long-standing product, it's pretty easy to quantify a central london immensely expensive building, and it's easy to rank it above breakfast. Again, you're conflating value to your employer with value to society. The building you help make will indeed make the property owner more money than Sunny's cooking will make the restaurant owner. That's all you can say. The value to people on a society-wide scale is significantly harder to determine. Most individuals benefit more from a good breakfast than they will from some new office tower that they'll probably never set foot in. |

I'm kind of surprised by how useful handheld mode has been; I figured that, where it's too big to fit in most pockets, I wouldn't really use it as a portable. Handheld mode was great for bringing it when I was staying at my girlfriend's place, though, as well as giving me the freedom to take it away from the TV if needed (i.e. somebody else was using it). I generally prefer TV play for most games, but I do rather like how seamlessly I can switch. |

_AdjI_ 09/18/18 2:18:17 PM #28 | Metalsonic66 posted... The Wii and the U had great exclusives but very, very few of them. Which is why they functioned best as secondary systems. PC covers all the multiplat stuff, and does it better than any console option, making it the best choice for a primary system. All you're missing out on then are PS/Xbox exclusive titles. You could probably make a case for the PS3 being a serious competitor there, but not the PS4, 360, or Xbone just yet (and with most of Xbone's pittance of an exclusive library coming to PC as well, that's not likely to improve). There are enough games out there that you really don't need a lot of games for your secondary system. Might as well go with quality over quantity, then. DPsx7 posted... Discs cost less don't forget. And why does that control my livelihood? Because the government (supported by the vast majority) stops me by force from making a living by forcing weaker people to submit. Oh hey, there's that point again. Your individual physical power means nothing in the face of political, legal, and financial power. Sure, physical force is the fundamental basis for the application of those other forms of power, but that really doesn't matter much. You don't have to dig that deep when trying to leverage power over other people. Also, don't kid yourself. The government isn't the one keeping you from making a living by subjugating anyone. The battle system was just awful, you just kind of waited to attack while running around. I will say that, of the three, the first one was the worst for taking a while for the battle system to come into its own. It's great once you have enough arts that you constantly have something to do and can more reliably weave combos together, but waiting nine seconds between Back Slashes with nothing else to use is just tedious. The other two give a little more variety earlier on, which means there's a bit less progression in that regard, but it makes the early game go a bit more smoothly. |

At the end of the day it's mandatory if you want to play the games that require it for online functionality so I can understand why some people would buy it, but let's not pretend it isn't an awful value proposition. I mean, $20 a year to play games online isn't bad. It's a whole lot more expensive than we've come to expect from Nintendo, especially with how long it's taken them to get this service together (it was supposed to be up and running by *last* fall, with early adopters just getting a few free months of Splatoon and ARMS, so Switch owners shouldn't have had time to get used to free online for the system), but it's not a bad price. It's just that the incentives they're offering alongside online play really kinda suck (with the exception of cloud saves, which would be a nice little luxury if not for the lack of manual backups that makes them kind of necessary). |
