I think there's this disconnect with people who don't actually have to deal with these things where they believe a hurricane is some kind of movie-esque spectacle, and it's disappointing when and if it doesn't turn out to be as spectacular as the 'hype' predicts. People reacted the same way towards Matthew, as if it was somehow a letdown that the storm ended up skirting the coast instead of being The Big One that finally clobbered Miami. I'm not completely without sympathy for this mindset; you really have to live through the dread and anticipation that an approaching hurricane puts in you before you can appreciate both how it affects you and others.

I have my personal grievances against overhyping a storm to a degree, wherein an overload of info can send you into a panic; which is why I'll always take WINK's news over CNN's in cases like this. But it's always better to overhype a storm than underhype it, and it's better to be literally safe than sorry.

Love this game, been awhile since I played. I ought to pick it back up. But there's two roads to go:

1) play it just for fun, not worrying about min / maxing, taking things as they come.
2) looking up a guide in order to remember zone placement for getting Cinquedea and subsequently Steal Weapon asap, trade over a bunch of those mission items that double exp, make sure all my Viera only ever level up as Assassins, etc.

I honestly don't think my obsessive nature will let me pick option 1 at this point.

Gettin' to be about time to do another Final Fantasy 6 runthrough. It used to be tradition to play through all of my series faves once every year: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and Tactics. But to be honest, the only ones I've played in the past decade are 6 and Tactics.

The question now is, do I go with the GBA version and all that sweet extra content, or do I play the good ol' original / SNES Mini, which is still the only version that didn't fuck up the ending synchronization between soundtrack and cutscenes. Might finally be time to relive the glory days and go with the latter.

Is it me, or is "WINK" the coolest station code that I've seen?

As I kid I was partial to Fox Cincinnati's WXIX for some reason, but yeah, WINK is a pretty classy code.

Speaking of, according to their article Flo will be just shy of a Cat 5 threshold over the ocean, but it didn't make mention of what strength it would be at landfall. Flo still has something like 400-500 miles to travel in a sharper NW direction though, and taking my asspull meteorological knowledge into account, I assume the ocean waters will be a few degrees cooler the further north it goes, which should hopefully sap some of its power (I haven't seen an ocean temp model in awhile though, so that could be off-base).

Now it is suppose to be a category 5 when it hits land. From someone in Hampton Roads I expect my house to be gone when I get back.

These things can vary by the hour. Last model I saw had it down to a cat 3 when it hit land; still bad, but it could make a big difference. Also have to factor in how your house is rated against storms, and just sheer luck.

It's also possible that whatever news outlet you're following is embellishing slightly, whether it's due to chasing ratings or a more benevolent 'better safe than sorry' motivation. I kinda wish all coastal states had their own regional equivalent of SW Florida weather news like WINK; they're vets when it comes to forecasting and reporting on hurricanes (they called Irma's inland turn first), they have a vested interest in predicting them as accurately as possible (since, well, they live here too), and they never sensationalize.

I know it's empty advice, but stay positive. Irma proved for me that miracles can happen even up to the last minute.

Helps make the victory sweeter when you can say 'haha, you all cheated and I still whopped your asses.'

Oh the simple things in life...

I remember thinking this before hurricane irma hit

Now I'm terrified of hurricane season lol

That was my thinking every single year for decades, until Irma hit. Now I no longer think of hurricanes the same way.

Irma was a game-changer for me too. We'd only been living down in SW Florida for a year and a half; up to that point in my life I'd lived in the rural Midwest, and for both Matthew and and a different low-level tropical storm / hurricane the year before, I just closed up the shutters, got the generator in place, and played Xbox all day. The week leading up to Irma was the most stressful week of my life; and most of our possessions were still down here in boxes when we headed north, and for the first time in my life I had to come to terms with the apparent fact that my home and most of my possessions would be ruined or even gone. Only by the grace of God did that storm turn inland at just the right time to weaken severely and spare us any damage, and there haven't been many days since where I haven't paused to appreciate that.

To say the least it gave me a newfound empathy for people in the path of hurricanes - I'm stressed out for people now in Florence's path even though the storm won't affect me personally.

Poison can bypass the 'protected' status, so save often when leading followers through Falmer dungeons. There are also very rare instances when enemy damage can outright kill an active follower. Poor Faendal got one-shotted by a bear once.

And not for nothing TC, but most of your complaints can be fixed by mods, even on the console. There's Mihail's (sp) monsters, a Hunt of Hircine (?) quest mod that adds goblins, ogres and minotaurs back into the game, things like that. One of the featured mods on B.Net right now adds woolly rhinoceros to the Whiterun plains.

It's Corporal Sterling's personal sniper rifle -- he's at Camp McCarran initially and can end up at Camp Forlorn Hope later. IIRC, you can only get it by reverse pickpocketing something better into his inventory, then stealing it when he unequips it. Loved using that thing.

Or I could shoot him in the back of the head with a BB gun.

I liked that dude.

If he's got the Carabine equipped, pickpocket his ammo, then leave the cell (i.e. go outside the McCarren gate), save, reload, and reenter. This will cause him to unequip it, and you can pickpocket it.

Be aware that it takes a looooooong time to accomplish this, he's very hard to pickpocket. Even getting his ammo might take a dozen tries.

If you're good and prepared, the Promontory is on-par with the Quarry in terms of difficulty (Dead Wind Cavern is the bigger challenge, since you're caught in a confined space). As long as you creep up and left from the landing and along the northern edge of the area, maybe laying a few Bottlecap Mines or Satchel Charges as you go, you can still take a sniper's approach and gradually work your way south toward the main nest.

This is also a good opportunity to make use of Esther and all those Big Kids / Mini Nukes you've got stocked up. Just make sure and stand on the high ground and give your shots some extra arc if you mix Esther and Big Kids, or you'll probably end up nuking yourself.

Metroid: Zero Mission was a thoroughly forgettable game except for the Zero Suit bit, which I hated (and also hate how that has arguably become her more iconic look).

I prefer the gameplay of FFTA and FFTA2 to FFT; better race, job and ability variety, better overall job balance, getting to see the opposing units before picking your squad, fights to be had outside of story missions and random encounters, and a few other reasons I'm forgetting. Shame about the Judges, though; they're pretty indefensible.

Sprtel Wood + Annabelle + Remnants PA + a couple doses of Steady = the game isn't really challenging anymore. Obviously this isn't the only way to get ridiculously OP in this game, but it is my favorite.

I typically don't like PA (except for Fallout 4, where Power Armor was hands-down the best thing that game did), but that retro Remnants armor is so deliciously campy that I can't help but wear it.

1) I probably already said this in this topic, but Dead Money ages like wine. I loved it the first time I played it - DM was the turning point when NV transitioned from 'pretty fun game' to 'this is the best damn 7th gen game I've played' - but even I was frustrated to the point of screaming by the speakers at times. Once you commit those at least partially to memory, that frustation melts away.

2) Wiping out the Van Graffs is pretty beneficial all around. Apart from the obvious loot, going Paladin Hardin's route with the BoS is the only way to keep Black Mountian Radio on permanently (which is a big deal for me, lol). All of the Van Graffs' GRA uniques default to the Gun Runner Vendotron after Gloria bites it, but I'm still paranoid enough that I have to buy the godly Sprtel-Wood before killing them, just to be safe.
