biggest thing is the restrictions in department stores for me. "nonessential" items can't sell things. somehow flooring is considered "nonessential." gardening is "nonessential." but party supplies, perfectly fine! and lottery tickets are seemingly explicitly okay, so you can't buy seeds but you can buy the lotto.

there's other restrictions she's got in place others don't have, like stricter limits on where you can go. if you've got another home you can go to that in other states but if you're a michigan resident no can do. that includes residents from other states who have a home in michigan, for the record. can't go to your neighbor's place if you wanted to, that's different. basically she's proposed rules that affect the private house to a more extreme degree than other places.

Is that worth getting out in a crowd of people to protest? Yikes

I do agree the lotto thing is dumb. I was remarking to my grandma yesterday that even if you won big, I doubt you could go claim it.

They have to observe you doing something wrong on the road to pull you over with just cause... They can't pull you over because they suspect you are drunk. If you stagger to your car and get in it and drive off, they can't pull you over unless you do something that violates the road laws.

Some cops in the town over was targeting a bar by sitting outside of it and it was a minor local ordeal for awhile. Cops had to stop.

A couple local bars used to ask the police to come down with a cruiser around closing time to ensure everyone would leave on time and not start stuff. You would think that would cause people to not drink and drive... NOPE. Everyone still does.

As a non-drinker, Ill never understand this

At least now the bars are closed!

Rural/suburban areas of not huge size until recently basically never had ride sharing available. And even now are almost barely ever running (if so maybe one person total).

At least where I live.

Any day I have been to a bar that wasn't within walking distance to people is probably about 80-90% people driving after drinking... the other 10-20% is just the person who came with that person.

Taxis don't run after like 6pm here and basically no ride sharing... and most bars aren't walkable. Basically everyone in areas like mine if they are drinking they are driving also.

Not everywhere is like cities.

I can read statistics and I can understand all of these problems on an intellectual level. But I cannot truly feel them. And that's a good thing. If I could feel them, I'd be paralyzed forever. About the normal stuff, COVID would barely be a blip on the "global suffering" radar...

All we can ask as humans is that we all do our best to alleviate the suffering of others whenever we see it or feel it. And if you cant feel that even when intellectually presented with those issues, something is wrong with you

I cant do anything about starvation except donate money and food, so I do. I cant do anything about turmoil in war torn countries except donate money to mobile hospitals, which I do.

With COVID-19, doing your part for most of us is as easy as just staying the fuck home as much as possible

The answer to 2 is more tricky. Most of our guests are local and totally would have come, except for my family which are several states away and probably wouldn't. One major reason we're rescheduling is so that my parents will be able to see at least one of their children actually get married in person (my sister already did the 'sneak off and elope and tell people later' thing).

So really the core of the issue is not the lockdown, but your parents unwillingness to travel during a pandemic
