| Topic | Is this fraud? |
| wolfy42 06/30/20 1:11:06 PM #31 | I think many of you don't understand that currently you don't need to seek work to remain on unemployment, so it's not fraud. That may change soon, but for now, you do not have to look for work to receive unemployment under the PUA. In theory, you could even quit a job and STILL qualify because of stay at home orders, especially if your high risk. The qualifications for receiving unemployment under the PUA are very small, almost anyone could qualify if they wanted to. Basically if you have a work from home job, and quit, you wouldn't qualify. If you work at a job that isn't following safety precautions and you don't feel safe, you can qualify even if you quit. If your high risk, you can quit as you have been told to stay at home. If you didn't have a job at all, you can qualify because you can't look for a job safely. So again, people are not required to go back to their old jobs, since they are not required to LOOK for work at all right now. Technically if they turn down a job they need to report that, but, they are not required to call back their ex-employers to get a job offer from them. Initially at least in WA this was set to end July 1st and the PUA is set to end at the end of July...but they may extend one or both of those deadlines. Part of the problem is ....well, they extreme range in wages. Some people can live on $1000 a month just fine (and in fact without having to work and spend money on travel etc, even less), others are going to struggle on $3000 a month. This led them to adding....I think it was $600? A week to unemployment during the PUA. Min wage varies, as does the base min unemployment you can get from state to state, but for easy numbers, lets use $10 an hour as a semi-universal min wage currently, and base min unemployment as $200 a week. A large percentage of jobs pay min wage or near min wage, for those people if we use $10 an hour, that is $400 a week and $1200 a month, or about $1000 a month after taxes etc. Meanwhile under the PUA they get a MINIMUM of $800 a week, and probably more like $1000. So they are making literally as much per week as they used to make per month working full time. Yes, part of the problem was so many jobs were paying that little (also don't forget many min wage jobs refuse to give a full 40 hours, and many were living on 34 or less hours a week as well). Again, as I posted above, for many living paycheck to paycheck, they have gotten 4x as much as they usually make per month, for over 5 months now. That is enough for them to comfortably live for well over a year before having to go back to work at this point. Why would they risk going out and getting sick to work a job they don't need in the near future? --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." | Topic | Is this fraud? |
| wolfy42 06/30/20 12:19:46 PM #27 | Well it probably depends on what state you are in as well, Washington for instance allows you to not go to work if there is a stay at home order and still get unemployment (unless you were working a mandatory job etc). That pretty much ends at the end of July though. Up until that point you have the option of not going to work if you believe it's too risky and still getting unemployment, which sadly is more than most people make with a full time job. I'm a bit on the fence on this issue to be honest, I think the way they set up unemployment is waked, but it ends in 4 weeks (and may require you to start actively looking for work staring this week). That being said, currently the number of new virus cases per day are higher then they have ever been in the US (also higher then they have been anywhere else), so this isn't really a GREAT time to be going back to work if you can avoid it. The real question is, will people who don't need to work for the near future, go back to work, or start working, if there is a high risk they will get sick if they do, and should they even be expected to take that risk? Part of the big problem is that many people have been getting much more then they normally make in unemployment for months, and currently have enough to pay their living expenses for many more months because of that. In some cases people were getting over 1k a week, and are only spending 1k total a month lol. That is literally enough for them to live off for years without working at this point (saying they started getting benefits at the start of Feb that is 20k+ they recieved by now. Saying they spend 5k of that, they would still at this point have 15k left over for future expenses, and have at least 4 more weeks of benefits coming in so 18k after spending 1k this month). That is enough for those who are frugal (generally those people making near minimum wage most places or about 45% of the population), to live off what they have saved for the next year and a half. Convincing them to go to work while they are not safe, and don't need the money, is going to be hard. --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." | Topic | let's talk about my shitty diabetes doxtor |
| wolfy42 06/30/20 12:09:24 PM #10 | Well your doing a good job of controlling your blood sugar levels, way better then me. The nurapathy crap sucks, I get that in my legs and feet as well and I also had a problem with one of my toes recently. My doctor is completely and totally worthless (especially now), so I have mainly had to come up with solutions myself. That being said, I had HORRIBLE migraines for the longest time, for years in fact, but they were directly due to a combination of very high blood pressure and stress, so that could be partially causing the pain at the back of your skull. I don't know if you have alot of stress right now, but it makes everything much worse. You might also have a problem with your back/spine, which can cause pain and numbness in your legs/feet. I was diagnosed a buncha years ago with degenerative disk disease and they wanted to do surgery. I was like....nah....and I have mostly figured out how to avoid having my back go out (Sleep on my side, don't drive more then an hour or so, don't stand more then 2 hours etc). If you don't already sleep on your side, you might try that and see if it helps with the pain/numbness etc (it doesn't totally stop it for me, but it keeps my legs from feelinglike they are half asleep most of the time. Anyway, I really shouldn't give advice I don't follow myself, but if you don't like your doctor, you should just switch to another one (So should I, and I really planned on it before the virus thing happened but now it's too complicated). MY AIG is horrid now and i'm still being pretty careful on what I eat (was over 10 last time, but has been around 9.8 etc previously). Before I had this doctor it was rarely over 7, but he changed my perscriptions on me (and I couldn't get em changed back), which jumped me from 7.2 to 9.8 and last time to over 10. Sorry you got diabetes btw, it really freaking sucks. Especially if your staying at home etc. I was doing good the first few month and still excersizing regularlly, but I have mostly stopped that now as well. To freaking hard to keep up a routine for me for this long. Anyway a decent doctor can make all the difference so really, try and get one you like and feel like you can communicate with easily. My current doctor is Russian and doesn't speak very good english (almost impossible to understand) and he keeps messing up the perscriptions he orders or not giving me directions (doubled one of my meds but made it 1 times a day instead of 2, so I ended up taking 4x as much for 6 weeks because of it as one example). --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." | wolfy42 06/27/20 11:40:13 AM #65 | Honestly slow cooking it is probably the best solution, a chuck steak/roast comes to mind (just bought 3 today at 3.99 a pound each). Cheaper steaks/meats usually cook best with a slow method, but I wouldn't use a pressure cooker (even an instant pot), as it kills most of the flavor. You can combo it (first sear the roast/steak, then pressure cook, and finally finish it off at a low temp in a sauce etc). For the sauce use spices + onions + bell pepper + tomato sauce (that helps break it down even more, and the beef flavors the sauce nicely) Or do a nice slow roast in the over, dry with a good sear on the whole roast + spices. If you do that and want bbq sauce/teriyaki etc, just add that near the end. A good crock pot can also work well, still sear it, but the really nice thing is you can set it and go to work for 8-10 hours and come back to a yummy meal. I used to do that all the time for tons of stuff when I was teaching. In the over, even at lower temps, I wouldn't really just leave it all day unsupervised. You can also use indirect heat on a grill if you want as well, especially if you cover it with aluminum foil (against after searing the whole thing first). This also allows you to cover it with a rub/sauce and have it seep into the meat while you slow cook it. --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." | wolfy42 06/25/20 10:42:25 PM #20 | Just ordered my monthly pizza (a week early or so but whatever). Anyway went to use postmates where I currently have FREE delivery (trial month on that), and the service charge alone was $10 lol. I switched over to Uber eats for the same place and even without free delivery I saved $7 lol. Uber eats does charge 15% of the total, but they don't bend you over and defile you like postmates. Seriously they literally (no joke) will boost the service price significantly if you have their free delivery. They make up for the delivery price in the service charge, so you end up saving maybe a dollar. Meanwhile they up the base cost of the food, they charge the place making the food as well, and they often lie about what the actual total was anyway (which I caught them on and got a refund....eventually...after a ton of emails...for). My free trial ends in 2 days but it's sad that even with it, postmates just isn't actually worth using. --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." | wolfy42 06/25/20 12:09:58 PM #18 | adjl posted... Having a middleman is more expensive (I forget which one, but one of them charges something like 20% of the food cost), but it saves the hassle of having to find and hire a driver (made harder by app services scooping up a lot of potential candidates), the problem of paying the driver for downtime (many restaurants don't get enough delivery orders to keep a driver running for their entire shift, but having them service multiple restaurants removes that inefficiency), and it means they keep getting business from people who would prefer to order through an app than by phone instead of losing out to their app-using competitors. The problem is those apps etc are soooooo freaaaaaking greedy lol. I've talked to the drivers, and I have done research online. Alot of them will not pay them much from the delivery cost, if they get tipped on the site, so tipping them in cash actually makes them get paid more. I think the way it works is the sites basically ensure they get paid a min amount from the delivery fees, but they subtract the tip amount from that, so if you tip a driver 15% on the site, for a $30 order, that is $4.50 for that delivery, meanwhile the site charges a flat delivery fee and 15% of the total cost as well, but if the driver gets tipped enough only gives them like $1 from the $9 they get. IF you tip in cash though, the service has to bring them up to a minimum, so they get something like $4 from them and whatever you tipped in cash. Not sure which of them is like that, but the others still are raking in the cash while the drivers get along mainly on tips. It's really not fair, and it's why I think places should start hiring drivers (instead of waiter..which they used to need). Even if they only need one driver for some hours during the day due to it being slow, they would have been paying for a waiter anyway. And honestly if you could get delivery cheap right now, any place that does that is gonna be slammed. Heck you can even charge more for a longer distance (to compensate the drivers who can't deliver as many meals due to it being farther away). Say $2 cost for delivery within 2 miles radius, and $5 cost for delivery within 2-5 miles (but if your outside of the 2 mile radius you may need to wait longer etc (they would wait till there was going to be a driver free to make the food). That would still be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper then the uber/post/door options currently and would massively boost buisiness for them. Right now I can't get almost anything delivered for less than $7 and usually it's at least $10, so it's just not worth it. --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." I'd actually give the 2$ base per delivery to the drivers straight up, or min wage, whichever is higher. Costs the restraunt NOTHING that way or very little (during slow times) and the drivers get bank. Most of the delivery services are just greedy as hell lately, it's far past time the food places take things into their own hands and cut out the middle man. Many of them up the cost of food and/or actually charge the resteraunt as well. One place near me has a whole seperate menu/price for food because uber eats charges them 30% of the order price, so they upped all their food prices by 30% to compensate. Uber then charges a delivery fee AND 15% of the total (including that)....to the customer, so not only are you paying all that, but your doing on prices that are already 30% more. --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." Thats a place every ten minutes, and the last place would be waiting an hour for their pizza after it was ready unless the delivery driver picks it back up from the store, which then makes it 7 places in an hour. Then you need time to park, meet the person, them to get their payment, and anything else. True, although the delivery radius is usually only 1-2 miles, and you break it up into quadrants, which means each driver is delivering to only a few areas (so you can drive from one place to another quite fast). In general it's 2 trips of 30 minutes each, deliverying to say 3-4 places each trip. That means the most wait for your food is about 30 minutes tops. Even then I would usually ask to be put on the "next" run so I was at the top of the order. Not all places do that mind you, but if they were delivering alot of food constantly, they would come up with a system like that pretty fast. Porky's pizza did that, and Brewery City pizza in olympia etc, it's common for places that deliver alot. --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." | wolfy42 06/25/20 8:21:29 AM #1 | Yeah, alot of people are using uber eats/doordash/postmates etc, but in general they are all quite expensive. My question is, why aren't more places delivering, and for less (or even free?). Many pizza places for instance used to deliver for free, but now they pretty much all charge. Domino's, Pizza hut, Round table etc, they charge extreme amounts in some cases to deliver (Round table was $9 I believe!!). Even pizza hut/domino's is like $6 or something for delivery, which seems pretty expensive per person (Especially since your expected to tip as well!!). But I mean, not even counting pizza places, most other resteraunts don't have their own delivery services, burger places, chineese food etc, all that was very common in the past in cities like NY etc (as you could see in shows like Sienfield). But although many are actively working with delivery services, they are not offering delivery themselves, which is pretty crazy, they could actually end up with MORE customers right now then ever before if they had a cheaper delivery service. Post mates or Uber eats charges a freakton, generally $5-6 for delivery base + 15% of the total order (including the delivery price) and then your taxed after all that is added together, and finally you have the tip based on that complete total (including tax) which is generally a min of 10% (although you can enter your own amount). Meanwhile you also get a $2 charge if your order is under a certain amount (usually $10). This all leads to paying over double to have something delievered most of the time!!! Like a $15 order from Uber eats is 15$ base +6$ deliver + 15% of 21$ ($3)+12% (tax) of $24(about $3) +at least 10% of 27$. So your end total for a $15 order turns out to be $30 (and that is basically just 1 meal for 1 person at most places). Now, if instead you ordered a $15 item from a place and they delivered it, even for say $2 delivery (but no other charges), + tax and tip, the total would be about $20 including the tip, and the drivers would easily make up their base pay with the $2 per delivery (they would only need to deliver 6 meals an hour) and would get tips on top of that. Everyone should be doing that...seriously. Whats more, you don't have to buy cars, you don't have to do tons of stuff, hire people to do the driving themselves, and just pay them by the hour to delivery food. They need to have insurance etc, and a decent car to drive in for the job, and boom your set. So why isn't this happening...like AT ALL, let along a ton? --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." Glowing Elephant "Stonehedge was a sex thing." |

I have never cooked em with bacon though. Actually I have not had any for over a year, I will have to remedy that next time I go shopping. | Topic | Do you eat at buffets? |
| wolfy42 06/25/20 7:35:38 AM #15 | I'm kinda in crab withdrawal actually. IT's too expensive to buy from the store (freaking $30 a pound with the shells on etc), so I would go to crab buffets at Redwind Casino or Emerald City Casino etc for all you can eat crab. I have not been able to do that for like 6 months now, so no crab for me. I tried immitation crab for a bit, but it's just not the same and I got tired of it fast. All the other buffets I can live without (though I miss mongolian BBQ as well), but I can get chineese food delivered that is similar etc. I can't get crab though......and they keep freaking having adds for it on my facebook etc. But, it's not $30 a pound like at safeway in the adds, no iti's like freaking $60 a pound.....arrrgh, but it looks so good. If I was rich, you know, like a multi-millionare, I would eat so much crab. --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." | wolfy42 06/24/20 8:38:20 AM #12 | Hell yeah, I can't wait for rogue legacy 2. Seriously the first one is one of the only games I have finished in the last few years and in fact I have played it from scratch and finished it twice (and played a bit without finishing it a few other times). I'll even buy it in early access even though I really wish the full game was being released. | Topic | Effects of slavery |
| wolfy42 06/23/20 2:03:54 PM #42 | ChaosAzeroth posted... For some reason I find this train of thought horrifying. It is in a way, but luckily most parents do not act like that at all, but some do, and most could. The point was kinda that parents actually have that kind of power, so slavery doesn't actually HAVE to be bad, it just basically ends up that way most of the time. In a society with rules and protections, children who are basically slaves to their parents and must do what they say, are not treated badly in most cases at least. So it shows that you could have a system that wasn't all bad at least in theory. --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." | Topic | Effects of slavery |
| wolfy42 06/23/20 9:07:25 AM #38 | Interestingly I had a discussion with a friend about ways slavery could actually be good, and different types that are still in effect. I went with an argument that slavery actually still exists to some extent even in this country now, since parenthood is similar in some ways. Children are in effect slaves to their parents until they are old enough, but we do have protections for them, and the slave owners can not abuse them without repercussions etc. Sadly another example of slavery that is currently in effect is much worse, which is our prison system, especially the for profit prisons. I kinda of used one as a positive example and the other as a very negative example. Even the positive example of parents though can be abused and sometimes is, so slavery over all is a bad thing, but it doesn't HAVE to be, just sadly humans are a mixed bag, and while you have many good "parents" you also can have some very bad ones. --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." | Topic | Would you read a book with this image on the cover? |
| wolfy42 06/22/20 11:10:08 PM #14 | The spellsinger books were ok, only read em once. Not my favorite by that author, but not the worst either. Jack Chalker I think did a similar idea (might have been river of the dancing gods series?) first, and I think Christopher Stasheff also had a series like that. Finally one of my favorite authors L.e. Modessit wrote the Spellsong Cycle, which actually my least favorite of his series, but perhaps the best of the spell song type books (although chalkers was pretty good as well, if I could just remember the name). All of the river of the dancing gods books were good and I think it was in there somewhere. Ugh and how can I forget the first? Piers Anthony's Phase books, the Blue Adept basically cast spells by rhyming.....man my memory sucks now. --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at." | Topic | Do any of you ever give money to charities? |
| wolfy42 06/18/20 11:02:21 PM #13 | I have to a few but I generally prefer to spend my money directly helping people, as it has direct results and I know i'm making a difference. I have donated to support charities on my own, and also because friends etc have requested it on facebook or other methods for birthdays etc. I volunteered for charities though quite often in the past, especially food banks etc, that is also something you can see a direct result from. I have a hard time believing that just sending money to an organization is actually accomplishing anything even though it probably does. I'm very careful with my money and how I spend it myself, so I am also very careful on how I spend it to help others. --- Agatha "Your naked and they are nuns, it's not your eyes they're not looking at."
