Celes can absorb magic attacks. She is good against TunnelArmor, Kefka, and Dullahan (plus the dragons), but you can have better options, like buffing her magic star and nuking....or just using Terra.

Morgana is worse than Ryuji.

Not when Ryuji piles on Morgana about 2-3 times as often as the reverse. The derp moment of the party setting Ryuji up to apologizing...just for him to fail so spectacularly was the last straw...

Actually no. Getting caught by Makoto was....no. It was Operation Maidwatch.

Ryuji is my most hated character PERIOD. Seriously, fuck that guy. The amount of times he accidentally sabotages the party or makes Joker and other people look dumb in front of other people cause he won't fucking shut up is just....GAH! I just want to replace him with literally any other character. Even Hope from FFXIII isn't near this bad.

Which is sad, because in his Social Link, he's actually halfway decent. It's just amazing how fucking stupid and a fucking homewrecker he is. I know you "need" characters like that and they are meant to be unlikeable, but holy fucking shit.

Either way, they didn't know who they wanted as the main, and the story was a jumbled boring mess as a result. I would have even bought Vaan a little more if they stuck with the "Rabanstre is shit, and Vayne is responsible." But they pussy footed around that after the first hour or so and gave up.

And that's the problem. Square wanted the Tidus lightning "viewpoint character" bullshit to strike twice, but no one bought it. It's as if the writer's themselves knew that and gave up to focus on Ashe without telling anyone she was the real main beforehand.

It wants to do political intrigue mixed with "FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL MACGUFFIN!" However, given they go long, long stretches without actually adding to character development (and can't just admit Ashe is the character we're really supposed to be caring about...fuck you Vaan), the game just trips over itself at every opportunity.

I understand why they killed off Penny at the end of Volume 8. But, given the rigamarole of giving her the Winter Maiden powers, THEN the bullshit of giving her a human body, just to kill her off and give Winter the powers anyway...that is some roundabout storytelling. I suppose they didn't want the utter shock of Pyrrha all over again, but it's some weird backwards logic.

In the end, it made Winter uber badass as the tradeoff, so I suppose I'll live.

The Good

Episodes 5 & 8: They retold the Jet losing his arm/dirty cop thing and Pierrot Le Fou about as well as you could in live action. The guy playing Le Fou just chewed the scenery, and got the laugh down perfectly. When the show wants to, it gets some really heavy, down and dirty things right.

Spike/Jet: Spike and Jet's actors are amazing. They inhabit the characters the way you'd hope they would. Jet has some weird Barret from FF7 vibes with a "family man" sort of schtick, but given the subtext about trust issues and ex-wives and shit, I can buy it. He still comes off as a hardass, and Spike just has the cool factor intact. They really hold everything together.

The look and feel: Everything looks and feels like a seedy, old school dirty ass crime drama/comedy. The cinematography choices and such are...not great (will get to), but from the music, to the look, to the effects they present, this is as close to Bebop you can get while trying to get a more dirty, grounded crime thriller across.

The Bad

Faye/Vicious/Julia: I think reinterpretations of characters are fine. But there's also a bit of suspsension of disbelief that is a bridge too far. Faye is too jovial, Vicious is too much of a simp/daddy issues kind of guy, and Julia until the ending where she shoots Spike and takes over is portrayed very meekly and subserviant. Sure, that is what the story was calling for, but I dunno. That said, there is still room for them to adhere to Bebop episodes while bringing in some new ideas for Season 2. I don't completely hate the new directions. The issue is the gulf between what Vicious and Julia WERE, versus how these characters are supposed to BE. The actors are really good, but they aren't the "characters" you'd think they would be. Something amiss. I know some have mentioned the "no Spike Faye tension." I'm not really bothered, because the anime rarely if ever alluded to romance between them. Add in the hyperfocus on Julia and Spike, I am ok they chose not to bother.

Weird camera angles/zoom ins/close ups: This really feels like some low grade TV junk from a camera shooting perspective. For all the adherence to the visual and music flair, they really went for some odd ass "OOOH LOOK AT THE WEIRDNESS" camera angles on occasion. It works for stuff like Episode 6, but part of why Vicious comes off a bit of a try hard douche rather than an a hardened assassin is the camera zooming on him laughing or some off kilter shots to come off as "wacky"

Tone of the Show: They went for a 65/35 comedy/drama split here. The anime was solidly 70/30 drama/comedy. As cool as some of the banter was, it really kills the stakes at play when they are in a mission and cracking jokes. There's still some serious moments though. It just doesn't stick the landing when the anime was full of dry humor that wasn't trying to be funny or be a comedy. So it's a mental disconnect. In subplots or funny asides, the banter works and can lighten the mood. Jet and Spike definitely have chemistry.

The Ugly

Ed: I mean...what can you even do? She's a comic relief character in the anime, and there's no way you can even do her in live action properly. But...even in the worst nightmares could you have conjured THAT up. She is exactly as she should be, and that's the frighttening thing. You know she's going to be in way more...oh god.

Still, I enjoyed what they were going for. I didn't completely hate the show (and give them some credit for at least trying not to strictly adhere to the anime). But doing so causes some problems, and I can already tell a lot of people are less fond of it than I was.

Faye feels way too playful/joyful/comedic. The show in general goes for a more laissez-faire attitude. And that's fine. The comedy they do have works (and it's not like the serious parts aren't serious). I just feel the tone is 65/35 comedy/drama where the anime was 70/30 drama/comedy. That might be where the disconnect is. The show FEELS like Bebop, but the tone isn't what we're used to. The anime was more dry humor. This is definitely going in the witty banter route. Even Vicious gets weird funny lines, and comes off less imposing as a result. Faye comes off less intense and more jovial hunter ish too...just different.

I'm noticing the cinematography and camera angles also don't feel very sharp. Like they are intentionally trying to look low rent or B-movie-ish. Makes it look very low rent or cheap. Probably a design choice...but off putting at times.
