Also, not sure why trying a dub is still a "I'm horrified or stuck with it" zero sum game. I think we were past that point in 02-05. Still shit dubs on ocassion...but at maybe a 5-10% situation anymore.

At least this isn't the Anime board itself. You'd think watching dubs would be akin to suffering a plague. One guy in a sea of millions said, "The bottom floor of dub quality is way less shit now, even if the ceiling isn't still very high."

Around the internet, that is high praise somehow. People are dicks.

It's also a case of, "20 years on, FFXIII existing, and other things" making people realize that X-2 wasn't the god awful stain on the franchise it was taken as when it came out. It has some good ideas hidden in the murk and the stupid. It also doesn't change that FFX as an entity exists. You can separate both as,
"One is a classic, the other is a stupid mess of fun" on their own.

Not sure if anyone here would be interested in this sort of thing, but I've started reviewing some of the anime I've been watching lately. Did Psycho-Pass a couple weeks ago, and reviewed Shield Hero Season 1 last week.

Just felt like a way to utilize all my anime binge watching for a purpose for a change. At least if some trolls don't go, "Stick with LPs lol", fucking Youtube trolls.

After a few shows didn't grab me, I settled on something called Ergo Proxy. Either I watched the show once and didn't get it, or watched a show just like it and confused it for something else. All I know is the first ep was VERY odd, but in a way that grabbed my attention. Like some weird ass sci-fi horror or something. Maybe I'm in the mood for something fucked up. I'll see if further eps keep my attention.

Finished Angel Beats. The stakes could have been fleshed out more with the "antagonists" near the end, but I'd be lying if I said the ending itself wasn't powerful as shit regardless. The show really hit hard when it needed to.

Yes. After a couple more episodes, I'm all in on finishing. The comedy is dumb but written well. The mystery of what the fuck is going on with this "afterlife school" and "Angel" is what's carrying me though. Hearing about some of the character's death circumstances was the real kicker though.

Except a complex elemental/attack combo action RPG. Expect every character outside of one or two being fifty shades of comically crazy/weird/murdery/offbeat (no one is nice just for the sake of being nice). Expect a lot of really good voice acting and character motivation, brought down (sometimes) by the innane comic relief.

But seriously, the characters are the draw of this game.

Finally found a new show to watch: Classroom of the Elite. Not sure if it can stick the landing the first episode blew me away with, but it's the first in about ten different shows I tried to hook me completely so far. The fanservice shots are already getting old though. For a show with a premise that doesn't need it, it is fucking aggravating.

I mean...how the fuck else do you describe Velvet? When Eleanor and Laphicet are the most well adjusted characters in your party (since everyone else has no qualms about doing...ANYTHING), your game cast is several shades of fucked up. But to me, that's what Tales kinda needed. That hook of, "Have we ever been nice?" is amazing.

Note: I don't want every game to be that way. Berseria was fun because it was the one that did.

I think the weirdest thing is Eva gets this "perfect mess of stupid" down right, almost in the way FF8 tried but failed to do. It's gross and brutal enough that it somehow succeeds at...whatever it was trying to be. I mean, I prefer RahXephon as a package as, "This is totally and EVA ripoff and we don't make a lick of sense, but go with it." Rah is way too polished, even for a copycat. But Eva has a charm in just how...awkward it is.

Also, I do NOT emphathize with Shinji, Rei, or Asuka at all. Even when I first watched it about 10 years ago, Misato and Ritsuko were the "beaten down working girls who have to babysit and deal with crazy shit" people I actually gravitated to. But whatever. I'm over 30. Of course I'd get that.

It...is weird.

Evangelion was an anime in 1995-1996 that took the world by storm by mixing the "giant mech" genre and mixed in weird ass biblical imagery, complex family/daddy issues, and a fucked up second act of pseudoscience +to cover for a strained budget), and became an iconic franchise.

So, basically the anime equivalent of Xenogears/Xenosaga. I never took it as seriously as the critical and commercial majority did. I don't doubt it is one of the most enduring ones...but it is just a show about giant robots killing giant monsters. Any extra psychobabble is just window dressing.

I even met the dub actors and directors (people to this day known FOR this show), and even they have mixed feelings about being known for it. Maybe the Japanese reception to it is different, but it is one of those inescapable weird things no one can seem to avoid when talking about anime.

It takes a long...LONG ass time getting going. It's a lot of political machinations and GOD GOD GOD stuff (the usual Xeno fare). It's also inscrutably stupid...but still the fun kind of stupid. The allure of the game is the Blade system, not really its story.

Also, Nia is in it. It gets an extra point for Nia.
