Disco Elysium is the best but it's not quite aCRPG. No combat to speak of, for one thing. Definitely overlap with the genre though.

Planescape Torment has fantastic writing but its gameplay hasn't aged well. Personally I like it almost as much as Disco Elysium, but I also played it back in the day. Also requires mods/patches to run properly on modern hardware I think.

Fallout 1/2 aren't fantasy so they're not 100% comparable. The gameplay is archaic by modern standards, and it isn't as in-depth, but the writing and atmosphere hold up well.

Original Sin 2 has extremely good core gameplay (potentially better than Baldur's Gate 3) with middling characters/plot and inventory bloat that drove me insane. I drowned in the crafting system. Really enjoyed it for like 45 hours, though.

Original Sin 1 is just 2 but worse.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has great writing and characters (potentially better than Baldur's Gate 3) but its gameplay is not so great and it wastes your time like crazy. Had to mod the everloving crap out of it to outright skip some parts. Really enjoyed it for like 45hours, though.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker is just Wrath of the Righteous but worse.

If Baldur's Gate 3 can have the gameplay of Divinity 2 plus the writing of Wrath of the Righteous (combined with crazy production values), I will be very happy.

I've played several other CRPGs that are close to it in that department. However this is first one with massive production values. Being able to see the actors' facial/body performances makes a huge difference.

About 20 hours in, and basically every single NPC I've talked to has come across as their own fully-fledged character because the VA is top notch. They nail whatever emotion they need to. I think a decent chunk of them are actually better than some of the main cast (who are also very good). It helps that I haven't recognized any voices, which is nice when lots of dubbed works seem to use the same rotating cast of VAs.

No single performance is sticking out to me as an all-timer (although Astarion is getting there), but it makes the world feel alive when everyone is great.

Nah I don't savescum, I live with my decisions.
I'm mostly this way too, but I would still highly recommend experiencing multiple endings of the main game even if not the DLC. I think they feed into each other and make the overall narrative that much more satisfying.

Speaking of which, I've officially beaten the game and am done with Cyberpunk. Overall I enjoyed the game way more than I thought I would. In B8 terms, I'd probably rank it in my Top 30 games, which is significant when I've played hundreds of games I like. Very glad I waited until now to try it out after the major issues had been smoothed over.

DON'T CLICK ON THESE FFD:

The first ending I went for was siding with Hanako. Did this first because I was pretty sure it would be the worst ending possible, and hahaha oh yes it was. I can't think of a worse (or perhaps better?) Cyberpunk message than offering up your literal soul to a corporation in the vain hopes they'll help you. Appropriately horrifying. Johnny is super disappointed in you too.

Next I went for calling up the Aldecaldos and leaving Night City with Panam. I think it's telling that what seems to be the happiest ending is the one where you just leave that cesspool behind. Also really liked the focus on family and community. The Aldecaldos and even Saul came in clutch for you. That final shot of you flying away is my personal 'canon' ending for 2077.

But I wasn't done yet because there's apparently a secret ending! Which...I had to use mod + console command to unlock even though I was BFFs with Johnny, because I didn't choose those three specific dialogue choices 50 hours ago. Okay. All is forgiven because I got to storm Arasaka tower. I love how Johnny transitions from "yeah let's go out in a blaze of glory" to "holy shit this is actually working". The relic malfunctions continuously decreasing your health is a nice touch too, really added to the tension. Finally got my Very Hard mode challenge I was craving.

Also gave me one of my favorite exchanges in the game:
V: Johnny Silverhand sends his regards:
Adam Smasher: ARE YOU FUCKING WITH ME RIGHT NOW?

Decided to head past the Blackwall for variety's sake and wow, was not expecting the scenes with Johnny to be that emotional. Everything from his personal goodbyes, to him acclimating to his new life/body and promising to do better, to him giving you a Night City funeral was very touching. Loved this ending too.

I will go as far as to say that I don't think the ship controls could be better than they already are. This is coming from someone who isn't a particularly good pilot. Outer Wilds gives you near-perfect autonomy over what your ship is going to do; the rest is up to your execution. There's a learning curve and you'll still crash even later in the game if you fuck up, but that's a good thing. It makes the moment-to-moment flying engaging, and the penalty for failure is never steep anyway.

So - a confession. I'd never actually finished the Cyberpunk anime. I started it a long time ago, got 7 episodes in, then sidetracked by real life (although I was really enjoying it). The sidetrack + getting spoiled on the ending made me not have much motivation to finish it.

But with literally only the final mission of 2077 left...figured I should go tie off that loose end. Which means I experienced the Phantom Liberty ending yesterday, and the Edgerunners ending tonight.

Bonus Question: What was the first video game story beat that affected you emotionally?

Tough question as I was pretty RPG-starved for years. It was probably something like 'beating the Elite Four in Pokemon RBY' because that felt like an accomplishment back then. When thinking of an answer that better fits the spirit of your question...I remember being affected just by reading the plot summary of Silent Hill 2, even before I got a chance to play it. FFD don't read this.

I went with Songbird and sent her to the moon. That final lie/betrayal cut deep. I feel like the DLC has been building up to it, as basically every gig and side quest is about people lying to you and withholding information so you would side with them, even moreso than the base game. In the end, my V decided that even if Songbird was a backstabber, she still saw too much of herself in Songbird to abandon her at the eleventh hour. After all, in her situation, would I have done any differently? (also fuck Myers)
